Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

It's been ages since I've had a working laptop! My dd is just starting to need to use the internet for homework so she'd use it for that, id use it to store photos, stream music and fart about on the internet!

Auroraismama · 15/09/2017 22:41

My daughter is in y8 now and is getting more homework that needs researching on the internet. I don't drive and we can't always catch the bus into town (we live out in the sticks) bus fare too expensive . My ex, her dad, won't buy one either.

I would love to have a laptop around for my young girls to use. My DH is a programmer and would love to teach them coding. Even though I know nothing about it myself, I think it's crucial that girls see STEM as normal for them from a very early age. They couldn't use his extremely fancy laptop as he works from home on it sometimes, so a spare laptop to introduce our girls to coding would be brilliant.

Everything and anything in our family of six. Diary planning, music, netflix, games, budget planning, homework, nursery rhymes on youtube, catching up on tv, sorting family photographs and videos.

DS has autism and struggles badly with handwriting. His hands can't keep up with his brain and he has poor fine motor skills for holding a pen.

His ed. support team are working with us to teach him to type. It's slow going with school pc and my work laptop at home.

Would love for him to have his own laptop to learn and practice more, as the improvements are already showing

GruffaloPants · 16/09/2017 01:00

My 6yo is fascinated by animation. With a laptop we'd help her to learn an animation programme. I'd use it for my accounts (provided I could get a shot for 5 mins...).

A laptop would be used by the children for homework and for surfing the internet. They can do that on their phones but it's so much better on a larger screen. I still need to work on the family laptop so it would be great to have a one for the DC.

Elland · 16/09/2017 04:16

I'm just about to start a small business to enable me to provide more for my family, a laptop would make it so much easier to set up and run rather than just using my phone.

My son is only 9 months old but I know in the not so distant future a laptop will be really good for him aswell.

PeterIanStaker · 16/09/2017 08:25

Primarily I'd use it for the degree course I'm starting next month. The children would probably want to play Minecraft on it.

GoodyGoodyGumdrops · 16/09/2017 08:53

Homework!

I naively thought that one pc in the living room was the best thing for dc. Too much 'peacekeeping'. And too much Stampy Longnose. If we had 2 laptops I could have them all doing homework at the same time, at the kitchen table, while I cooked supper.

Falconhoof1 · 16/09/2017 09:04

I could do with one as last one broke and now I'm using my phone for everything which is annoying!

createbeauty · 16/09/2017 09:30

My husband prefers a desktop computer that can play the latest and greatest games whereas I prefer a powerful laptop for editing photos and videos and for other artistic purposes.
My six-year-old son would just want to play Minecraft and host his own YouTube channel like his favourites Stampy and DanTDM.

RedBlu · 16/09/2017 09:33

I would use it for studying, I am on maternity leave and stupidly agreed to also start studying for a online course on fund management.

Typically, our computer decided to stop working and cannot be fixed and we don't have the money to go and buy a replacement - meaning I am attempting to view the study material on an iPhone.... my poor poor eyes Sad

A new laptop for us would hopefully eliminate the constant arguments over who gets to use our old Acer - 2 secondary-aged kids with homework to do and DP with work-related stuff. Add to that the fact that our current laptop takes forever to start up and load anything and has a battery life of approx. 3 minutes = stressful times. DD has just started GCSE work so it will only get worse... A new laptop would be an absolute lifesaver!

MAForster · 16/09/2017 12:38

It would make using the internet much easier as our old laptop is a little slow now

leannaj86 · 16/09/2017 16:26

My son had started yeah 8 and his homework is far to advanced for our probably the first ever laptop made
Also I'm hoping to get a new job and this requires me to make power points etc which I have strongly have no hope with with my laptop
My nieces & nephews laugh at the creepy blue box hahaha it's just useless for th modern world we are now in
Id love an advanced piece of tech to get my son's homework done to the highest standard and to hopefully get me a better job to finally enjoy the better things in life

thathappened · 16/09/2017 17:47

If you had seen how long it's taken for my old one to scroll down to the section where I can type this response, you wouldn't need me to tell you what a new one would mean! I nearly gave up after the third attempt. Also I wouldn't have to secretly meet my daughter to retrieve it from her part way through the day, on the days when she needs it in school.

BiglyBadgers · 16/09/2017 18:15

My husband is in hospital at the moment and has our only working laptop so he doesn't lose his mind with boredom. Another one so dd can watch stuff at home (we don't have a TV so all film and kids TV watching is on the laptop) would be really handy right now.

Enigma222 · 16/09/2017 19:07

A new laptop would help my daughter with her school homework and no need to share any more!

marymod · 16/09/2017 20:06

My son would use it to research his homework, my husband to look things up and I'd be happy to keep up with friends and family far and wide.

KavvLar · 16/09/2017 23:00

It seems essential these days to have a laptop and we are missing out. Old one is now obsolete and won't connect to the internet, husband lost his job in January and has had odd bits of temp work since, he is going down to the library every day to make use of their computers to look for work. Wish he could search in the comfort of our own home. Kids are also missing out without one to complete homework and extra credit assignments.

POTC · 17/09/2017 00:57

A laptop would mean my 14yr old could do homework at home with me instead of in lunch break at school. It would also mean my 10yr old Aspie could Google things when mum doesn't know the answer!

MSHGW · 17/09/2017 01:54

My partner is about to start a uni course, so it would really come in handy for that.

Pikmin · 17/09/2017 07:50

We could do with a laptop small enough to fit in my bag but powerful enough for homework, programming, gaming, photo storage and editing. .

Zomam · 17/09/2017 08:52

My partner loves his photography and wanted to start his own business doing it - the only thing stopping him is our 8+ year old laptop! It's too slow to download anything he needs and struggles to even use the internet on it! I feel terrible knowing we can't afford to replace it for him to have his dream job.
