Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

My dd has just started year 10 and she would really benefit from a light laptop which is fast for lots of different applications.

AlakazamAlakazoom · 14/09/2017 22:23

Our laptop hangs for what feels like an age every time you click on a new link - we'd get so much more use of a new faster one as we wouldn't give up in frustration!

firawla · 14/09/2017 23:14

I have a 6 year old MacBook that I use loads for work, but need to look for a new cheaper laptop for the kids as our other one broke over the summer and they need one to use for school work really, although they also want it for gaming. A lot of the homework is online based even in juniors, and I don't really like them using my work one just in case they break it!

Ataglance · 14/09/2017 23:36

We don't have a laptop or desktop at home since my last laptop was broken, although I use a computer all day at work. The DC and I use phones and tablets to access the internet. I have realised recently that we really do need a computer and a portable laptop would be ideal. I think the kids need to become experienced with using a computer not just touch screen devices. I would like to show them all the software they could use for fun and work/School stuff. I'm worried they will be left behind if they aren't computer savvy. I'm starting a course in 5 months time where I will have to access e learning modules and prepare coursework so I need a computer for that. It's shocking how reliant we have become on tablets!

A perfect Xmas present for my gaming husband

SquareSquares · 14/09/2017 23:43

Mine is a sooooo slow. A new one would mean DC can do their homework on it and I get to watch films Grin

A new laptop for my family would mean being able to use one that doesn't need to be constantly plugged in (because it has a battery life longer than 20 seconds), one that has an 'a' key that works reliably & one that can cope happily with videos & graphics. Oh, to dream..!

userinfinity · 15/09/2017 10:11

With a new laptop I would create different user accounts for the kids with parental controls on and allocate them time slots for using. I think maybe a reward chart where they can extra laptop time may be a good idea too, they would love it!

Pickofthepops · 15/09/2017 11:04

Sooo many uses here. Husband has started a secondary maths PGCE after 20years in accountancy. We have an iPad at home but all four of us have dibs on that, especially the three year old. The IPad and Apple products have been our mainstay but woefully aware that our nearly ten year old is not proficient on computing and microsoft issues. Would love to buy a laptop to help him with this, to help Dad save his PGCE material and to give me my the three year old her iPad back :-) fingers crossed?

Sezza110 · 15/09/2017 12:00

We currently have two laptops and these aren't enough. The younger kids have tablets/phones but are increasingly demanding to use the laptop instead. We use the laptops for work so not to keen to let the youngsters use them.

Crumble67 · 15/09/2017 13:26

My eldest would use a new laptop for studying for her year 11 exams next year and in her free time for downloading music and watching films and shows. My middle dc is a great artist and cartoonist and would love an art app that would allow her to be creative. My son is a gaming fanatic and the PC that we own now doesn't really have the graphics or speed capacity for the latest games so it would great to upgrade.

cathisherwood · 15/09/2017 13:30

I would love a device I could use and keep just for me - we are not good at sharing in our house!

MipMipMip · 15/09/2017 13:32

This would go straight to my mum. Her laptop is on a permanent go-slow, despite debugging, defracing (?)and de anything else I can think of. She is constantly getting cross at it and it's random shut down and as most of her life is spent looking after my gran she really needs a way of relaxing that are can rely on. How else is she to read mumsnet!?Grin

zippyants · 15/09/2017 13:33

I would sell it and buy a larger Iphone - laptops are so yesterday.

PickAChew · 15/09/2017 13:36

You can't touch type on an iPhone.

RueDeDay · 15/09/2017 13:40

We don't have a computer of any sort at home, my daughter makes do with a tablet. I would love a laptop for us to share, I would be able to use it for creating and editing scrapbooks, and DD would lovely one for school work and playing Roblox!!

VelvetKnickers · 15/09/2017 14:49

My eldest has autism and cerebral palsy. She has just started secondary school. Because of her cerebral palsy she finds writing a very arduous task and her autism means she finds concentrating quite difficult. Being able to do her homework on a computer would make a huge difference to her

PuckeredAhole · 15/09/2017 17:23

Our desktop was given to us abd its nearly 10 years old now. In fact, the tower isn't even thr same brand as the screen.

As a family we use our computer for so many things. I use it for listening to music and doing lesson plans, my husband uses it to watch the NFL and my daughters use it to play games and watch kid's educational songs.

We'd live the convenience of a laptop, as our house isn't big and they are such space savers!

aggga8 · 15/09/2017 17:27

i need good laptop for my kids homework and for myself

ThePug · 15/09/2017 19:36

I could use a new laptop to work from as several of the keys on my current one have come off thanks to an over-excitable toddler and dog frequently jumping over my lap. That would free up my current one for the toddler to watch his beloved YouTube tractor videos on!

CGORST · 15/09/2017 19:38

My laptop is held together with sellotape and I can't put it on my lap, or anywhere because if I try to move it off the table it switches off. If I had a new laptop I'd have one that didn't weigh a ton, played audio without sounding like a Dalek, could be moved without switching off and wasn't sellotaped together!! :-) Oh and it would need an Intel processor because this hasn't got one of those either and it's rubbish - I never knew processors were so important until I got a rubbish one!!

Ratbagcatbag · 15/09/2017 19:50

I have an 8 year old laptop that still works but it's so slow. I have an iPad of a similar age so I can't get the latest apps for my DD.

Right now I'd want one so I could get the lasest education games that reception class have recommended.

mishknight · 15/09/2017 21:24

use my laptop for everything but it is so old and therefore so very slow. A new one would be great

overduemamma · 15/09/2017 21:31

I'm trying to do my GCSE's again to better myself for my little family. I've currently got a laptop but it's so slow it's unreal it's preventing me from doing any work at home. I eventually plan to become a midwife :) x
