Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

We'd love a laptop that works fast and we can set up individual profiles so the kids can have their own logins, so long as I could apply restrictions on unsuitable content/websites etc. It would be great to be able to download lots of educational apps too as my kids love using the computers at school, and always ask to be able to use the same programs at home.

chaplin1409 · 14/09/2017 04:00

Our current laptop infuriates the children and really is on its last legs. It definitely has a mind of its own and will switch it's self off randomly nor caring if they are in the middle of doing a piece of school work or trying to play a game. It's getting harder to use it now that my children are getting older and needing it more and more for school work.

rachbeth · 14/09/2017 06:41

This would be amazing and a massive boost for my daughter who goes to hospital a lot for operations on her spine, she's always behind in school and this could help her loads x

Damia · 14/09/2017 06:44

Our current computer keeps shutting down randomly. Don't know what is wrong with it but would love a new laptop for us all. My son loves his games on there like Minecraft.

foxessocks · 14/09/2017 07:11

I really need a new laptop. Baby ds has stood on ours one too many times! To be fair it has lasted us years and years. I use it for all my internet shopping and some work and dh uses it for studying.

WowOoo · 14/09/2017 07:25

My son could do his homework without shifting me off the computer!
After this, he could watch his YouTube gaming videos without having to wait ages for them to load.

Goldenhandshake · 14/09/2017 09:06

I could work from home without dragging my lump of a work laptop home with me, DD could access the digital learning tools her school recommends much easier.

Sammyislost · 14/09/2017 09:08

My teacher husband could actually relax in bed while he completes his lesson plans etc!! He sits downstairs alone when everyone else is in bed to use the PC.

ArnoldJRimmer · 14/09/2017 09:15

My current laptop is about 4 years old and is as slow as a week in the jail with big green line thingys on one side of the screen. A new laptop would be amazing for us as a family because my parents and sister live 360 miles away and my 3 year old adores them and loves to chat to them on Skype. Technology has been incredible for keeping our family together. I'm also currently pregnant (after my fertility treatment failed Grin) so another amazing reason to keep in touch with them Grin

I have an iPad mini, which is great for internet browsing and video/music, but I really need a laptop for creating/editing documents, job searching, and doing my work.

My DC want me to have one so they can commandeer my iPad mini!

kennythekangaroo · 14/09/2017 10:41

DD has been researching computers for secondary school in the apple store!! A little bit out of our price range though.

She would love one for doing homework on and enjoys making animated movies with an iPad so it would ben great for her to developer media skills.

lindseystuart85 · 14/09/2017 12:41

This laptop would be incredible for my family and I, My partner and I could use it to update our C.V'S Not to mention googling how to do certain D.I.Y Tasks around our home :)
I often look up recipes for our family meal times but i do struggle on my mobile, A laptop would be super handy!
My children do like their gadgets but I feel this laptop would really help with their education, being able to read up on blogs and sites about projects they are currently doing at school
The laptop would also be brilliant for saving happy family snaps creating memories.

sarahbrokenshire · 14/09/2017 15:51

I would be able to let my little man watch his fave youtube videos without running my phone charge down :)

WAFFLEO · 14/09/2017 17:15

My youngest DS really doesn't enjoy school and after two years he finally came home and said 'today was a really good day'. When I asked him why, he talked about all the computer work he had done and how much he enjoyed it. Havinf a laptop would mean he could continue to develop his interest!

vickibee · 14/09/2017 17:18

My autistic son is requesting one for homework, so he can do research and type assignments. He struggles with handwriting and it would help him a lot but he has his eye on a mac expensive tastes. He enjoys photography and could also use it to upload photos

Feargalthecat · 14/09/2017 18:39

My daughter uses a laptop that is now about 7 years old and has served her well. In that time she is now in her final year of A Levels and is a keen amateur photographer and I can see she has outgrown the limited capabilities of what she is using. I only noticed when I went to use it the other day the letter C doesn't work in it so I've no idea how she's managing to type school work with it.

Leanmo38 · 14/09/2017 18:42

Our family pc is over 5 years old and really could do with an update.
My husband is a software developer who works from and would absolutely LOVE the chance to upgrade his laptop!

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 14/09/2017 18:45

We all share a laptop, but I'd like one for my eldest for homework as he types so much quicker than he writes!

Motleycrue · 14/09/2017 19:39

A new laptop would be such a dream come true for my son who wants to be an inventor. He wants to be able to put all his ideas on a computer and find out more information about how to make his invention ideas work. He is 9 and loves technology. His hero is James Dyson.

nerysw · 14/09/2017 19:49

I'd be able able to use my laptop without it being constantly plugged in. It probably wouldn't warm my knee up at much either though.

Netty50 · 14/09/2017 20:00

I'm a 52-year old who runs a little baking business and has pretty much all I need in life. So, having bought an old professional camera to take cake photos, I now like to take photos for other people - often for simple emotional reasons as a way of giving something back, like craft peoples' products, chefs making a meal, etc. Photos have to be managed through a laptop and, as mine is losing the capacity to upload and e-mail them, a new one would be handy! Sometimes, the capturing of someone else's moment through the eye of a good lens is the best delight you can give. Without a laptop, it's getting hard to gift it. So please help me out. : )

RainbowHash · 14/09/2017 20:02

Oh my gosh! So many things. I work a lot from home (in addition to the office) and constantly find myself juggling home and work tasks. Work tasks will require multiple documents and processes at the same time and I find my old laptop can't keep up with me. I need lots of speed and no crashes or freezes. Is that the same as memory?! Ha - shows how much I know! I need a laptop that can keep up with me and one that is nice and shiny and sleek!

And thin and light so I can take from one place to another on my bike... my current one literally slows me down when I'm taking it out and about.

So speed/capacity and lightweight are my top requirements.

Foxxtooth · 14/09/2017 20:26

My girls are budding computer programmers and they would use a brand new laptop in order to access Scratch. They are desperate for a machine fast enough to cope with the things they want to do

dippydeedoo · 14/09/2017 20:59

I've never had my own laptop or pc (I use my phone),ds has just started 6th form and has access to a laptop but to have a good laptop at home would make a lot of difference allowing him to study, follow his hobbies and use the programmes for editing and filming - for me I'd be able to see a big screen, use it for my further education and generally improve my life, maybe even starting the book I'm always writing in my minds eye and to sort out all the pics and stuff on my phone.
Definitely on the Christmas list - I've been good all year!! Xx

OnMyShoulders · 14/09/2017 22:05

We could finally sort out all our photos from the last 5+ years. We have NO photos up of DD who is now 4 Blush. To be fair, she is DC5 Grin and we tell her that the baby photos of our eldest DD are of her.
