Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

DS is currently happy with his desktop PC (doing homework but mainly playing games) and I'm happy with my tablet (for social). DD needs new laptop almost entirely for school work (Though typing this I realise she has a good case for pinching one of ours)

CordeliaScott · 13/09/2017 04:02

I am currently looking at buying a new laptop as the screen is broken on my current one. This would mean that I could work from home and give my mil a break from looking after the kids whilst DH is in hospital.

My laptop is 11 years old and sooo heavy. It would be great to have something lightweight and actually portable- I think I've only taken my current laptop out the house once.
I would use the laptop for eBay and managing photos - also researching and internet shopping.

Tigger83 · 13/09/2017 07:43

We'd love a new laptop both of ours are on there last legs and we'd like to get a new one to share. We've just started to take more photographs with our camera and we'd love to be able to have a laptop to do more with them especially as we have a baby arriving and our wedding next year so lots of amazing things to take photos of!!

ssd · 13/09/2017 08:16

our laptop is shared between mum dad and 2 teens, its murder, almost as bad as sharing the car between us all......

AWholeLottaRosie · 13/09/2017 08:41

I'd love a new laptop but I would give it to my parents I think. They are elderly and it would be great for them to have internet access especially through the winter.

JadeA92 · 13/09/2017 10:33

I would LOVE a new laptop, as ours is 5yrs old and so slow and bulky!
My son is only 16 months so won't use it for a few more years (although we could watch TV shows in bed on rainy days!) but I have Bipolar Disorder and am a Mummy Blogger, as well as running my own business and studying towards a Bsc Honors Degree, which I need the laptop for on a daily basis.

mumsbe · 13/09/2017 10:42

An up to date laptop would help my non verbal 4 year old to communicate and to access educational recourse for kids with special needs. This would also help my daughter with her homework/ play educational games and I have just started uni so this would help the whole family.
Our laptop is about 9 years old and very slow takes a really long time to do anything. My partner also likes playing football manager which is a game I don't understand but can't miss him out.

When looking for a new laptop for the family, I'd choose a laptop with lots of storage for family photos and one that could stream series/movies quickly as my husband and I often watch Netflix or Prime when we get some time to ourselves in the evenings. With my husband being an artist and photographer, we need a laptop that will run programmes like Photoshop and other editing software. With regards to my little lady, I try to avoid screen time as she is so young, but I'm sure that, when she's older, I would take into consideration her needing to use a laptop for research and homework.

My daughter has just started secondly school, and is having to go into school at 7:30 a.m every morning to do her work as we have no laptop or computer at home.all her work has to go onto a memory stick. I had to give up work four years ago due to an accident making me disabled. I am a single parent who can't afford such things as a laptop for my daughter. My daughter is a young carer and I would love a chance at making my daughters life abit easier

theresamustgo · 13/09/2017 12:26

My DD needs one for schoolwork. Hers is very old and some of the keys are missing - poor thing.
DS on other hand would lobby for a gaming beast.

WingMirrorSpider · 13/09/2017 13:09

My son (13) is obsessed with computers. He's really into coding and is pestering us to buy him his own laptop. We've got an Apple laptop which DH has for work but DS says he needs a windows laptop for what he does, so he's been saving up to put towards one. We'll probably make up the shortfall and buy him one for Christmas. This is all on the condition that he uses it constructively and not just for gaming.

So I'm hoping he'll use it for coding and changing the world. Bill Gates 2.0 with any luck Grin

asuwere · 13/09/2017 13:49

My laptop is quite a few years old (a hand-me-down from my Dsis!) The DC use it to do their homework so a new one would mean that they could all do their homework before it has to be plugged in again. DS1 is also really into coding just now so probably a better spec would be useful. (and I could continue to use my old one for important emails and MNing Wink)

emmmaaa26 · 13/09/2017 15:23

This would be great for projects and homework.

Sierra259 · 13/09/2017 15:35

A laptop that we could totally lock down with parental controls would be great as then we could be happy that it could be used purely for their stuff. DC1 has a child's camera so we could put her photos on there to store and edit. Plus educational games and to use for school work as they get oldee

Sierra259 · 13/09/2017 15:36

Older, even! Blush

Proudmummytodc2 · 13/09/2017 15:51

With a laptop I could let my son do his homework while he's sitting beside me and I can keep and eye on what he is doing.

Him and his sister could also use it to watch some videos and play games in their down time and I can watch everything and have proper parent controls on it for them to limit what they can actually view.

TEN10X · 13/09/2017 17:10

After being virtually homeless and estranged from family, and having to deal with a brother with mental problems. I would like to own another computer since my last packed up, for business venture and also to continue some charity work for homelessness I am working on.

Trinidading3 · 13/09/2017 17:13

At the moment we have a laptop that has a virus so not too good Sad and a Computer that DH put together but is basically rubbish Angry.
I would use a Computer for my Teenage Son who needs a fast Computer for Gaming and he also wants to code and design a Computer Game .
I would use it to write two books i want to publish and put together, a Children's book and a Cookbook, I would also store my photos in one place and have my Music collection in one place (on the Computer).
I also want to start my own Business selling a product, so this would keep all my reports/accounts etc on it.
My 4 year old would also use it to watch his Cartoons and DVD's and go forward with his Maths and Languages which he is already Mastering by himself on the Computer.
It would basically be amazing to have a Top of the Range, Hi -Tech Computer. It would definitely be used to the Max in our Household.Grin

smithsurvey14 · 13/09/2017 17:26

Ideally a laptop should be able to do everything well and not just somethings. My husband uses a computer for eBay, recording his vinyl records onto disc, e-mails, programming radios and accounting. My eldest uses the computer for homework, playing games and watching films. My youngest needs the computer for online homework, creating art and Skypeing. I use the computer for emails, online surveys and paying bills.

Coffeechick · 13/09/2017 18:25

I would use a new laptop for my daughter to do her homework on. She currently uses my tablet which doesn't have all the functionality of a laptop.

smudgedlipstick · 13/09/2017 19:02

I could manage our finances properly and keep of track of what we are spending and cut out what we waste money on, especially as we are supposed to be applying for a mortgage at the moment but need to get finances in order first. I also am halfway through a web development course but my current laptop died so I would be finishing that with the end goal of being able to work from home and enjoy my young family more. We are a tech family and am looking forward to being able to teach my daughter basic coding skills at a young age as I think they are future necessary skills for our kids now, can't now I don't have a working laptop 😭 feel like my arms been cut off 😂

Anj123 · 13/09/2017 21:37

As my daughter has just started high school, another laptop would be great for her homework as some of it has to be done online. The laptop we have is several years old so is quite slow.

andbabymakesthree · 13/09/2017 22:18

I'd use it for photo editing
