Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

My DCs both have a laptop. I am a school governor and have to borrow their laptops to read information.
I would love one of my own and get great use out of it.

My DP and I both have a laptop each, however his no longer works from he attempted to update to windows 10 last year, and they have a combined age of 19! I use my 8yr old laptop on a daily basis and would love a new one however maternity leave pay doesn't stretch that far!

We use our laptop for so many things - it's great to take away on holiday when the hotel TV has nothing on, and we want to relax a little!

RockingDuck · 12/09/2017 17:38

We are looking at new laptops right now for DD (11) a new year 7 who suddenly needs to upload all of her homework onto a school website. I use my own laptop for work, and it is becoming clear that she needs her own... we'll be looking for something light, reliable, and easy to use.

It would bring peace in our home. My 2 children share our very old computer. Having a laptop that will run at a higher speed would mean they could both do their homework & complete it without having to worry its about to crash & lose everything. & if it runs fast it means they can both complete what they need to do & still have time for fun.

All of us would use a lap top, we just have an old desktop computer or our phones. Dd would be able to watch kids YouTube and movies on it so we could have the tele back! Plus she has just started school so it would be handy for when homework starts rolling in.

My family would use a laptop for a variety of things. My eldest would use it to do his uni work, it is sent over the net every week. My other son is a gamer and would use it for that, my eldest daughter loves photography so would use that function and my youngest would use it to watch videos.

mummymummums · 12/09/2017 18:50

My DH is self employed and keeps invoicing, client details and accounts software on the kids laptop that we bought mainly for school work. His old laptop was provided through work and given to him when he was made redundant but it stopped working at the same time. So he needs one for his information but also to update his website etc.
The children use theirs for homework and a few games, like Roblox. Have never tried watching films as I'm not great with technology.

A new laptop would mean I could continue with my studies without worrying about the fact that my current laptop is ready to die at any moment!

LollipopsandWine · 12/09/2017 19:39

A new laptop would do a lot in our house - it'd be working round the clock! My partner runs his own business, and his laptop recently gave out under the strain, so he could use it to bring work home rather than being at work late. I'm a law student, so I'd be putting it through it's paces doing assignments and referencing things - that would save me a trip to the library. Then in our free time we'd be able to show my daughter videos on how thingd work/how things are made - she's at a very curious age and youtube is one of her favourite pastimes lately 😁

sweir1 · 12/09/2017 19:52

I would love the technological dark age!

MakeTeaNotWar · 12/09/2017 19:53

My laptop is old and slow. I'm worried about it dying and losing all years of family photos that have been saved to the desktop - so if I had a new one, I'd sort out some proper storage for precious, irreplaceable memories.

ProfAnnieT · 12/09/2017 20:46

It would just make life easier.

flozza42 · 12/09/2017 20:48

My daughter would love a new laptop for her college studies

lindsaysss · 12/09/2017 20:52

My current laptop is very slow and old. Being keen into photography I am always taking photos of family days out, events and beautiful things around me. It would be great to have a new laptop which could of help me process my photos & create family memories.

hbakfam · 12/09/2017 21:20

I need power for gaming and lots of battery for music and films!

madge47 · 12/09/2017 21:24

my son needs a new laptop for his university degree.

VilootShesCute · 12/09/2017 21:38

I am so fed up with not having a laptop to put my photos on. I would manage my photography on it and free up my digital camera memory!

purplevamp · 12/09/2017 22:20

My daughter is asking for a laptop so that she can do her homework on. She's currently in Year 11 and really needs her own computer/laptop. She's using the family dinosaur computer but needs one that she can take to school.

HalimaB · 12/09/2017 22:31

A laptop would be great for the whole family to share as we don't really have one I can use it for the Internet rather than go on my phone internet all the time and the children can do their homework off of it. Spreadsheets can allow me to budget for the family

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 12/09/2017 23:32

We don't have a laptop or Ipad in our house. DD has had a leaflet sent home from school asking them to practice maths on an app through the week.

Thing is its only available on ipad or laptop, so she can't. The teacher can monitor what she's done, so she's worrying as am I. So I'd use a laptop to help with her maths and homework.

sbruin1122 · 12/09/2017 23:59

a computer would be great to catch up on tv!

sally2489 · 12/09/2017 23:59

I would love my 2 and 4 year old to have the use of a "proper computer/laptop" rather than technology like a tablet, as it breeds bad habits that are harder to break at a later age, such as autocorrect, touchscreens, etc. They could play educational games on there to learn to read and write in a fun way way, aswell as promote manual dexterity by using a mouse or touchpad, which I think a lot of children miss out on.
