Lidl has a couple of questions about your weekly shop that they’d love you to answer over the next 48 hours!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

Please post your thoughts below and one MNer will win a £50 Love2Shop voucher (note it will be 2x£25 vouchers, one per transaction).

I used to go to Tesco for the main shop but have recently been going to Lidl. The only thing that puts me into Tesco is it has a better range e.g. iPhone charging cables, hartleys 10 calorie jelly pots, pyjamas for the kids etc. The food shop is now done at Lidl as we eat well i.e. Steak once a week, there's lots of fresh veg and meat of fantastic quality compared to what I'm used to.

I have done my weekly shop at Lidl in Mirfield this morning.
I sometimes go to Morrisons or have a delivery from them.
The prices are much cheaper at Lidl, compared to Morrisons & the quality is excellent.
I am really looking forward to the new Lidl store opening in Mirfield on August 10th.

I do my weekly shop at either Asda or Aldi because they are both close to where I live. I alternate because I can't get everything I want at Aldi.

I don't shop at Lidl because we don't have one close by and I have to drive past a few supermarkets to get there so it isn't worth it.

1 Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Sainsbury's and Aldi because they're close. My nearest Lidl is too far away

2: my main shop isn't at Lidl for the above reason

3: distance. I like Lidl's range very much and would definitely do my main shop there were there a branch closer to me

I usually go to Aldi and then pick up anything they don't have in Sainsburys. I don't go to Lidl because there isn't one close by. I would definitely shop there if I could, as I like what they stock and of course the prices are great.

Tesco - nearest.
Closest Lidl is too far away and does not have as wide a range of vegetarian and vegan food as Tesco.

I use Sainsbury's because of the variey, our local Lidl is small so it does not have what I need whenI need it. I can't go on checking every day.

I go to a number of shops, just like the olden days :) including independents. I switched to Aldi for certain products because the main supermarkets were starting to take advantage of us! LIDL are not local to me so it is not worth the cost of traveling (35 miles round trip), but this will change if a branch opens up near us! I have used LIDL at Christmas times when out shopping away from the local area.

We shop all over. We have very specialised dietry requirements so we get some things at Lidl, some at the other supermarkets, some at farm shops, and some at health food stores and an Asian supermarket.

  1. Nearest supermarket is 5 mins away by car, Tesco's, so I go there for the weekly shop as it is the closest.

  1. I sometimes go to Lidl if I am close by as I like the bakery section, fresh fruit/veg/ deli counter, drinks, chocolate (yum) and like to look at the aisle of "specials", but not for a weekly shop.
  2. The nearest Lidl is too far away, on very busy "A" road for regular shopping, and it can be scary drive. Also the queues at the tills can be long if one is just getting a few bits.

Just to say, I'm in England, and I once tried to pay in Lidl with a Scottish note and was refused and had to pay by card. The cashier made a big deal of as if I was trying to scam her.

I do my main shop at Tesco's for several reasons. I use clubcard vouchers to pay for a delivery pass, and have all my heavy shopping delivered.

I use the Tesco app on my phone to see the special offers, then meal plan for the week. I find this the best way to budget, whenever I've tried to do a weekly shop at Lidl's I've found that I've still needed to visit Tesco too and ended up over budget!

I shop at my local Lidl's for fruit and veg. I don't do my weekly shop there because there isn't enough variety foodwise (my local Tesco is about 4 times bigger than my local Lidl) and my ASD DC will only eat particular brands, most of which are unavailable at Lidl.

I do visit Lidl twice each week though - usually Mondays and Fridays for fruit and veg, and we also love the instore bakery items.

I do my main shopping both at Tesco and Lidl: I do like Lidl's prices and good quality products, but we are a vegetarian family and Lidl does't stock a lot of vegetarian/vegan products, so I have to go to Tesco for that reason

I do my weekly shop at Sainsbury's as it is my local supermarket and time to shop is a factor for me.

My nearest Lidl is a 20 minute drive so I don't get to Lidl often. When I am passing I do go in as I love to browse the middle aisles and also think the quality of food and household goods is fantastic as well as reasonably priced.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

I do online shopping with ASDA. ASDA has affordable and good quality products, and I don't drive so online shopping is convenient for me.

Yes the nearest one is too far away and I don't think Lidl does online shopping (please correct me if wrong). If it was nearer or did online I would give Lidl a try.

I use Tesco for my weekly shop. It's closest to me and I go on foot a few times a week instead of getting in the car. If you shop clever and take into account that no money is being spent on petrol, it works out as cheaply as ASDA, Lidl or Aldi. I don't use the nearest Lidl to me as it's in a really bad part of town (I know this sounds bad but think getting harrassed by drunks and drug addicts on the way in, out and sometimes while shopping!) and I find it quite grubby and disorganised. However, if I'm out and about in the car, I will pop into one about 5 miles away which is totally different. Love the drinks aisle, the toiletries are great and the aisle of randomness is always worth a look!

Tesco because the have scan as you shop - saves so much time!

Rarely go to lidl, never for a main shop.

Mainly because it doesn't have scan and shop - as I said for q1, it's very convenient.

I go to Tesco to do my weekly shop. Mainly because it is close and has a good range of products. I don't use Lidl as the closest one is 30 minutes away by car. I do sometimes shop in Lidl. I find the range in the Lidl shops to be a bit too limited. I haven't been able to find the nice licorice they sell in the Lidl shops in Denmark for instance. Really miss those.

We shop at Tesco and Lidl.

Really love Lidl for the price but it isn't only that- the range they stock is growing all the time and some of their things are firm family favourites.

Sometimes if we've been away and want to do a massive shop we will use Tesco home delivery service as Lidl doesn't do that. But other than that we love Lidl!

I shop around and don't really have a main shop I am loyal to any more. If i have a lot to get or heavy things it tends to be Tesco as I am a widow, I lost my husband last year and for health reason I don't drive so that changed my shopping habbits tesco is very close so i can walk with heavy stuff or make two trips. I do shop in Lidl there is one close to the college I teach in but none near to my home. I would love if there was . IT was rumoured they were opening a shop near me I was so excited but it came to nothing. I dont like Tesco in general the staff are rude and sloppy the quality of veg is very poor either over ripe or not anywhere near ripe. I would rather have smaller diverse shops like Lidl or Aldi. I am not brand loyal so lack of brands dose not bother me. I love Lidl flower shop you cant beat their plants and the flowers last longer on a grave then anywhere else. I find in general their staff are very pleasant and on the ball. . Open one in my area and i will use it all the time.

After being a brand buyer for years I started shopping at Lidl because I'd heard the products were just as good as the brands I normally buy.

They are cheaper, just as good quality and in some instances have a better flavour. There aren't as many products to choose from but in a way I find it easier to shop because of it. I always shop there now and have saved a huge amount on our weekly shopping bill.

1 Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Sainsbury's because I can either order the shop online or go to the local branch which is very large.

Don't go to Lidl

I don't think there is enough choice, the last time we tried our weekly shop there I still ended up having to go to Sainsbury's to get all the things I couldn't in Lidl.

Main shop is with ocado. The reason is that I work from home quite often and it is convenient to have it delivered rather than go to a supermarket. I have always had good service and the quality of the food is fine.

I would probably go to Lidl more for a top up shop if there was one near to me but in my City it is in the centre and not where I live, so I'd have to take a car into the centre to shop there. I often go the Lidl when I'm at my parent's house though as there is one nearby and I like the choice and quality, it's very good.

  1. I usually go to either Lidl or Aldi as they are reasonable priced and I love their fresh fruit and vegetables and plants/fresh flowers. Also they have a good selection of cheap baby bits like nappies, wipes! Will occasionally pop into Sainsbury's to pick up bits for the house as the interiors section is lovely.

  1. Price is a massive bonus! It's good for veg/fruit that's usually expensive elsewhere such as avocados, mangos, bagged leafy salads etc. Meat such as minced beef and cook in the bag chickens are good quality.

  1. If I shop elsewhere it's because of location (other supermarkets being closer to work), or I need to pick up things that are limited at Lidl such as baby clothes, medication.

I swing between Lidl and Sainsburys depending on finances and what else is going on (Sainsburys is nearer and they also deliver or do click and collect if time is tight). Sainsburys is a more pleasant experience - local Lidl is frequently dirty, has massive queues and is unreliable in terms of stock. The other weekend there was a whole section missing with no explanation. Can't beat Lidl on the price of veg and quality of meat though. And the bakery! The car park is also a nightmare - not enough room and the exit is in to a queue whatever time you go.
