Lidl has a couple of questions about your weekly shop that they’d love you to answer over the next 48 hours!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?
  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

Please post your thoughts below and one MNer will win a £50 Love2Shop voucher (note it will be 2x£25 vouchers, one per transaction).

Good luck with the prize draw!

I don't do a big shop because I do all my shopping on foot so limited to what I can carry. I shop at Morrisons and Aldi mostly for fruit and veg because they're really cheap. I shop at Waitrose for cupboard items and cooking ingredients because of the quality. It is between those 3 with occasional trips to M&S for specific meals and wine offers. Sorry Lidl but there isn't one in my town and it is a long way to get anywhere else from here! If you opened one in my town I'd be there!

sarahw2 · 08/08/2017 16:08

We tend to go to Tesco for our main shop, primarily because it is very close to home, and it's on the way home from work.

We do shop at Lidl from time to time, but this just tends to be 'on a whim', and we'll pop in and pick up lots of unusual bits and pieces. If it were closer to home I would be very open to trying to do my main shop there though (although I'd end up buying all sorts of exciting extras every week I'm sure!).

lizd31 · 08/08/2017 16:11

I used to shop at Lidl when I was able to get out & about but as I'm disabled & housebound now I rely on home delivery so get mine from Tesco

SSCRASE123 · 08/08/2017 16:11

I don't typically go to LIDL as there's not one that close to me. Mainly through habit we get deliveries from Tesco and then there is a Waitrose very close that we go to for daily shops if needed.

mooota1514 · 08/08/2017 16:13

I use my local lidl as the fruit and veg are excellent quality and the wholemeal bread is very nice. My children love the lidl yogurts we buy as they have different flavours. I also find my local lidl very clean and organised. We love the fresh bakery part as a quick and cheap lunch! I am a big fan of lidl and highly recommend it!

mo3733 · 08/08/2017 16:19

my nearest lidl is over half hour drive away so i dont go there very often. when i do though i can practically half the cost of the shop because the products seem so much cheaper than buying local

  1. Tesco. I have done so for a long time. Convenience. Clubcard. Although i am now getting frustrated with Tesco due to shrinking product range (30% of my core shopping list has disappeared over the past 6 months).
  1. NA at present but due to the last reason above, a change may be imminent.
  1. Laziness/convenience. I've gone to Tesco for a long time and it's easier to carry on than it is to change.
RunningHurts · 08/08/2017 16:21
  1. Main weekly shop - I get Sainsbury's online delivered. Works well because I can "do the shopping" on an evening DH is out and kids are in bed (so I couldn't go out shopping then) and it comes during my work at home day. So convenient.
  1. I don't use Lidl for main shop (see above) but do go often once a week for top up shop. Because it is local, good value & I enjoy browsing the random specials aisle
  1. Because I like getting my shopping delivered. Also I often can't get everything I want from Lidl (conversely there are certain items I would specifically go to lidlfor eg non nestle cereals
LikeARedBalloon · 08/08/2017 16:24

I mainly go to Aldi or Lidl.
I like Lidl because it is closer to my home. However I will drive to Aldi every few weeks as they stock things Lidl don't.. ..mash potato, better range of pre-prepared chilled meals such as seasoned salmon, chicken meals etc. I also find aldi has a better frozen range.
To be honest if aldi were closer then I probably wouldn't shop at Lidl as I could do my whole shop at aldi.

sarsar123 · 08/08/2017 16:26
  1. My main shop i do at Aldi because its closest to me. The prices are good and i can get in and out quickly. I still go to sainburys or tesco for a few products that i cannot get in my local Aldi.
  1. If Im near a Lidl i would shop there because of price and i prefer to shop in smaller stores.
  1. I don't do my main shop in Lidl because it further away from me.
badgermum · 08/08/2017 16:29
  1. I alternate between Tesco, Lidl and Asda for my main weekly shop, I also do one or two top up shops a week either in lidl or Asda, I go to Tesco for my main shop because I know I an get everything I need there, even though Lidl is actually my closest supermarket
  1. I go to Lidl at least once week because of the prices and because it is closest to me and I know If I need just milk or bred for example I can be in and out very quickly ( hopefully if the queues arent bad!)

I shop with Ocado fortnightly which I find convenient and easy. They deliver to my door for free and their product range is amazing - plus they buy back the carrier bags from me!

I don't shop at Lidl because there isn't one close enough to me and it would be a special trip past many other supermarkets to get to one. I also find the fast paced checkouts stress me out - I want to be able to pack my bags well at the time rather than happy products throw at me at speed and then having to rush!

However, I do really like the product range at Lidl and have been impressed with everything that I have tried. I especially like the seasonal ranges - and the bakery and chocolates - and find the quality and obviously the prices, excellent.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

My main shop is shared between Lidl and Tesco. Lidl for it's good pricing and location (and the bread) and Tesco for anything I haven't managed to get in Lidl

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

Lidl is between work and home so very convenience, which is an added bonus on top of the pricing and quality.

I shop at Lidl every week

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

I use waitrose online. With the mywaitrose discounts it's slightly cheaper than aldi plus they deliver. They send me regular money off coupons. I still buy pitta bread & bread in Aldi because theirs are too small.

  1. I don't shop in lidl now.

I've got two within 5 miles of me but you don't deliver, there's no loyalty discounts, your cat food has cereals in it which our cat gets a runny bottom from & I'd spend more. You frequently run out of unsweetened soya milk & the sweetened one has apple juice in it which tastes awful, you only do ground coffee not beans & the halva isn't a regular stock item, the range of frozen veg & potato products is very limited compared to aldi. Theres no incentive to shop with you when it's so expensive there.

I go Asda or get deliveries from there. It's close to me and good value.

N/A

It's a bit further than Asda and, although I like some of the products, there is usually a queue and few staff on. I also feel that I can't get a full shop done there and have to go elsewhere to get other stuff. Maybe I live near a particularly small one!

VodkaRevelation · 08/08/2017 16:43
  1. We do our weekly shop at Lidl. It's close, it's cheap, good quality.
  1. On average a Lidl shop works out to be about 1/3 cheaper than say teaconor Morrisons. It does some
of the branded stuff we like- robinsons, Heinz sauces (Though not consistently). Household stuff like cleaning products, washing and dishwasher tabs, loo roll and kitchen roll are excellent quality and value. The themed weeks are great for trying new stuff.
AnimalAddict · 08/08/2017 16:43

We go to Asda for our weekly shop as it is the closest supermarket to us. I love going to Lidl when I can but it's further away. Lidl always has a great selection of products at fantastic prices so I enjoy shopping there, just wish there was one closer to me. :)

mbb1 · 08/08/2017 16:44
  1. Tesco - nearest & has reward points
3 . Not a convenient location for me to get to
frances93 · 08/08/2017 16:46
  1. I normally go to Asda for my weekly shop, as it's closest to me and I can get everything under one roof
  2. I go to Lidl mainly for a top up shop and do a big shop there if money is tight that week, as I know I can get more for my budget
  3. The main reason I don't do my main shop at Lidl is because I have 3 dogs and I can only buy a pack of 6 dog food tins, where as at Asda I can buy a pack of 24 tins which works out cheaper.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Alternate between Tesco and Ocado for online shops depending on offers.

We use Lidl to do a top up shop, lots of baked goods, fruit and veggies. We prefer branded drinks and premium meat from other supermarkets.

Ethan260908 · 08/08/2017 16:51

I split my weekly shopping between Lidl and Aldi.

Both shops are the same walking distance for me.

I like Lidl because of the 30% reductions which means I can try different items on a budget and also put reduced food in the freezer where as my local Aldi doesn't reduce food items. I also prefer some other items like the chilli's from yourselves and the lovely selection of baked bread, which I treat myself to very occassionally - pannini and cheesey bread when they are on 5 items for £1. On the flip side my biggest indulgence is cheesy puffs and I do think the Aldi's version are nicer - but hey no big shakes for Lidl to miss out on 65p worth of sales.

There is very little to chose from Aldi or Lidl in terms of staff, I know most well enough now to have a good old chin wag with.

I do know that Lidl are expanding the Hartlepool store which I go to and I am looking forward [sic] to knowing what will be different.

Basically if items are in either shop, I go without and don't feel any the worse for it.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Morrisons and Tesco as they are both near to where we work and stock everything we need.

It's a bit far away but I wouldn't go even if closer as I don't think they have a broad enough range. I also have heard negative things about the quality of the fresh produce.

veegstez · 08/08/2017 16:54

I usually do my weekly shop at Sainsburys and Aldi as they are nearest. I get most of the stuff from Aldi as its cheaper and then stuff I can't get from Sainsburys. I do like Lidl and find it very similar to Aldi and would probably shop there if it was close to me - its all about convenience really. I'm vegan though and not sure what your vegan range is like. Not sure if you sell Tofu and do dairy free spread.

Byrdie · 08/08/2017 16:58

I use ocado just because it's easy and i can usually get a free slot within 48 hours. I have been to lidl lots of times but doubt i could do a full shop there as i like particular brands which they don't stock. I also hate the long queues with just one or two people manning the tills! However, the food and things i do buy there are always good.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
My main shop is usually done online in Morrisons during the school holidays. In term times I generally shop at Morrisons as well even though Tesco and Aldi are closer. I don't use Tesco after the horse meat debacle and I don't use Aldi because I've never been more than any particular reason if I'm honest.
  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?
Don't use Lidl.

I don't shop in Lidl because I've never had any desire to go in if I'm honest. I like to shop online so that would put me off if it isn't a service available. I do buy brands so wouldn't want to shop where there weren't the brands I like available. What I read online about "the shopping experience" also puts me off and ASDA and Aldi Fundamentally I want to shop where it's clean and pleasant with all the items I buy available and have pleasant staff happy to help. Not sure that that is what I'd get in Lidl so don't go in.
