Lidl has a couple of questions about your weekly shop that they’d love you to answer over the next 48 hours!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

Please post your thoughts below and one MNer will win a £50 Love2Shop voucher (note it will be 2x£25 vouchers, one per transaction).

Good luck with the prize draw!

Tesco or Lidl, depending how skint I'm feeling!

Price!

Sometimes I want more range than Lidl offers, or want a specific product (usually from Asian isle in Tesco!)

We usually go to Aldi, because it is the closest supermarket I can walk to and is more reasonably priced than some others.

I used to like shopping at Lidl but there isn't one anywhere near us now, I'm afraid!

  1. I do my main weekly shop at Aldi, with some other bits from Tesco. They're the two closest supermarkets to me.

  1. Sadly, I don't shop at Lidl unless I see something on offer that I really want.

  1. The closest Lidl to me is a 15-20 minute drive and I go past the door of Aldi to get there! It's a shame as I think the quality to Aldi is comparable and you sell bigger bags of nuts compared to Aldi.

1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

We do our weekly shop at Lidl. Actually we shop daily there as we live 5 mins walk round the corner from a lovely Lidl and we like to get fresh paninis, rolls etc. Our store is about 10 years old and has recently had a re-fit. The produce is fresh and we save a lot of money. I can also get in and out quickly as the queues are so short.

2. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

We like the prices, and often pick up orange stickered items at 30% off, especially meat and bread to put in our chest freezer. We like the weekend offers and will often pop in first thing on a Saturday to pick up a great offer. We actually like the fact that there isn't 50 varieties of everything - if I now enter a large Tesco/Asda etc I am surprised by the amount of different types of the same thing! We rarely buy brands, and don't find Lidl own versions any worse quality or taste. The bakery in our local Lidl is amazing.

3. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

The only things I buy elsewhere are Walkers plain/S&V baked crisps, as you don't sell baked crisps and cranberry sauce as you only stock it as xmas.

We are proper Lidl fans in our house and feel secretly smug that we spend so little on our groceries and eat so well Smile.

We don't do a main weekly shop. We do a month shop and then on in between weeks do a top up shop for fresh vegetables, fruit, milk and bread. We do our monthly shop at Aldi and then get any bits they don't sell at tesco with a few things (dishwasher cleaner, vitamins etc) from Lidl. We go to Aldi for the bulk of things because we prefer the store layout and it's easier to navigate than Lidl. We also think you get overall better value for money.

In my opinion Lidl (and Aldi) do not stock everything that most people need and this is the main factor why people may shop elsewhere, as you end up needing to shop around which a lot of people don't have time to do.

I do my weekly shop wherever I have vouchers for or depending on my budget for the week. So if we don't have a lot of spare money one week I'll do to Aldi or Lidl or asda, if I'm feeling a bit better off I'll go to sainsburys. Or sometimes it depends where I'm going to be near or if I have a voucher or coupons etc... basically I'm not loyal to any supermarket at the moment.

I don't usually go to Lidl as it's further away for me than other supermarkets. But I do find the parking easier at Lidl than aldi!

I now do my weekly shop at Aldi as there is one just a mile away and there is also one close to where my daughter goes to youth group. Previously when we lived elsewhere, I alternated between Aldi and Lidl as they were the same distance and in opposite directions so it depended which was most convenient. I always try to fit a shop in around the kids' activities, so for example I used to go to Lidl for a couple of years because it was close to swimming lessons.

I shop at Aldi/Lidl because of the lower prices and also because it only takes 30-45 mins to do a full shop. Time saved is important to me.

Recently I've discovered there is also a Lidl near my daughter's youth group so I'm going to try it after dropping her off instead of Aldi. However in the holidays when there's no youth group I would go to the nearest Aldi for convenience.

I'm keen to try Lidl again because we used to buy the Bami goreng / special fried rice / Singapore noodles etc which come in cartons and go in the oven - they are a useful emergency meal. Aldi also used to stock them but they don't anymore so I'm hoping Lidl still do them! I also like the bakery at Lidl.

No Main shop at all.
Lidl for the cheese and bread and fruit.
Sometimes for the canned / preserved goods.
Tesco / Asda for other stuff.Waitrose once in a blue moon
I have a very mobile day so can stop at any of these shops as the need arrises.
But I do hate the new car registration system my closest new Lidl have introduced. Just adds a layer of faff to a quick in and out.

For a typical weekly shop I use Aldi as I find it good value and quite convenient. If there is anything I haven't been able to get there I'll go to either Asda , Tesco or Sainsburys.
I occasionally do a weekly shop at Lidl if there's something in the weekly specials I want to look at but last time I did this there was no skimmed milk at all.

Main weekly shop is usually done at Asda. Have used Morrisons recently though for a change. Find Asda the cheapest and can get absolutely everything I need plus it's close.

I don't use Lidl for main shops because it doesn't offer a full range of what we need. There's 4 adults and a baby in my house so shops are big. There's also a couple of brands we are particular about that aren't stocked by Lidl. Checkout queues in my local Lidl are also ridiculous - quite often I'll pop in for a few bits and end up walking out without buying anything because there's only 2 tills open and both have massive queues. Why can't there be some self service tills for baskets?

Either Tesco or Lidl

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

We find the price very reasonable and get slot more for our money, plus DH likes the random gadgets in the middle.

Sometimes we need a bigger variety (like leeks!) or we want to just shop online and save ourselves a trip. Depends what mood we are in!

  1. I shop mainly at Lidl. It's convenient as there is one not far from us, and one near my mums house.

  2. I do my weekly shop there. The bakery has me hypnotised. I also like the range of products such as the different cold cuts like prosciutto, salamis etc. I also like catching my shopping at the till and try and beat the cashier. I throw it back into my trolley. I also like the Super Weekend especially when wine is involved Grin

  3. The only time I don't go to Lidl's is when Sainsbury's do 25% off their TU clothing range. I find the clothes not that great at Lidl, and your shoes for ladies only go up to size 7.

It's simple: Lidl and Waitrose are my favourite supermarkets, for their ranges and the quality of their food. If I have time I would always choose to start at Lidl (veg, fruit, cold meats, flour, sugar, eggs, milk, bread, biscuits, crackers, sparkling water, plus treats like the occasional frozen ready-meal and the weird non-food stuff. If it wasn't for my allergies I'd buy their household and toiletries stuff, too.) then Waitrose for everything else. The only Lidl stock I actively dislike are tinned fish, olives and antipasti, and the nuts, which are almost invariably stale.

1.
My weekly shop comes from Lidl. It is the nearest big shop to me and i don't drive. I prefer walking back with my shopping trolley then getting a taxi from a different shop.
2.
I go to Lidl because the produce is great value. I had German grandparents so I have always been keen on the quality of German brands. Christmas and easter are particularly good for traditional German items. I also love the bakery instore. At the risk of sounding pretentious, the croissants are as good as the ones in french bakeries. The bread products are incredibly cheap for the price. I also like the non food items that come in twice a week. Although since the Monday day changed to Sunday I miss out a lot as the wealthier weekend visitors snap up all the best items. Another thing I love is the themed weeks. We get very excited at greek week, alpine week, mediteranean week. The tube of harissa paste i picked up for a pound is one of the best I've had. When it is German week i get to eat all the foods from my childhood such as Spaetzle.
3.
I couldn't imagine not shopping at Lidl. Even if I moved away I would still try to shop at lidl.
Obviously I sound like I'm obsessed with Lidl but being able to feed my children well on a very limited budget takes away a lot of stress.

It would be great if Lidl had an awards scheme like tesco does! I feel like I buy a lot of branded products that can be easily sourced in tesco.

  1. I usually split my weekly shop between Lidl and Asda. We are vegetarian and sadly, Lidl don't have a huge range of vegetarian food so we have to look elsewhere.

  1. We use Lidl for our weekly shop as it's convenient and cheap. The customer service leaves much to be desired though and if we go first thing in the morning, we have to wind our way around the large trolleys left out and the man with the cleaner going around which is quite offputting.
