Lidl has a couple of questions about your weekly shop that they’d love you to answer over the next 48 hours!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?
  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

Please post your thoughts below and one MNer will win a £50 Love2Shop voucher (note it will be 2x£25 vouchers, one per transaction).

Good luck with the prize draw!

I go to Asda because there is a big one conveniently positioned in easy driving distance. It has everything I want; I know where everything is and I know their products are good quality but reasonably priced.

Lidl is equally close and almost equally easy to access (car park is a bit small) but I don't go to Lidl because I have had poor quality fresh produce from there on the few occasions I've tried it. Also it is a bit cramped and they don't have all the brands I am used to (which means I wouldn't know exactly what I'm getting). Also their staff are not friendly and helpful like the Asda staff. But the main issue is the poor quality fresh produce. Wouldn't shop there again because of that.

Usually do my weekly shop with Lidl. It's so much cheaper and you can always find a useful bargain in the centre aisles (both kids all kitted out for school for a fraction of what it could have cost me!). In my local store all the staff are friendly and will help is asked, almost always stock is replenished quickly and I find fresh food has a great shelf life on it (unlike at a well known bigger brand store where I have come home with food that has a use by date of that day or the next... very frustrating!). The only reason I go to other supermarkets is because Lidl don't stock as much branded items, some of which members of the family are particularly fussy on. Lidl have helped me make the end of the month pinch feel a little less painful (although if they accepted credit cards that would be even better!).

I tend to do a MONTHLY shop at a big supermarket. Then top up shops for fruit, bread, milk and other fresh goods.

I love to do my monthly big shop at Lidl but there isn't one close by so I might go to Tesco or Sainsbury instead.

If I can do my main shop at Lidl, then I will. Sometimes I'll combine a visit with a friend across town with a shop at Lidl.

PorridgeAgainAbney · 11/08/2017 17:08

My main shop is done in Sainsburys. It's 5 minutes away and I'm in a union so can order vouchers at a discount.

I've been into Lidl a couple of times but it's not that close and the range isn't wide enough for us (food allergies so need lots of ingredients/'basics' that they don't do). I can't be bothered to do a shop in there and then still have to go to Sainsburys for whatever I can't get in Lidl. The money I might save on food would be spent on extra petrol. I'll go if I win a voucher though Wink.

I do my weekly shop at Tesco as we have a Tesco extra and it provides us so many items on one place.
We do shop in Lidl every now and then because their meat is delicious but as they are a small shop and often don't stock the items we need it's easier just to go to Tesco and get it all in one place. If Lidl offered a wider range of brands (not just the cheap stuff) and items in general I would consider shopping there instead as the taste for many things is nicer.

RippleEffects · 11/08/2017 19:31

I just did my Lidl weekly shop. £58 for a trolley of food. Loads of fruit and veg too.

I'm not Lidl loyal, I alternate with Aldi and the odd Tesco/ Sainsbury/ Asda top up.

This week Lidl got my shop because the lovely jacket potatos were on offer and the DC were low on apple, orange and mixed juice drink (three DC each favouring a different one of Lidl cartons). I also needed some yogurt drink and really like the big ltr bottles just discovered in a weekend deal and already a staple.

I find Lidl quick to get around and not agressively trying to push me into buying premium products. I have liked the quiet shopping experience, Autistic son, I'm rather dissapointed that tannoys have been introduced it makes the till area near impossible for DS1.

defineme · 11/08/2017 19:39

I have heard great things about Lidl, but there isn't one near me so I go to Morrissons or Asda which are. I have driven the 10 minutes to Aldi, but have heard Lidl is better. I look for good value, variety of food and wide aisle.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
We use Morrison's for our main online shop. We find online shopping much more convenient and easy to budget.
  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

We prefer online shopping but do our top up shops at Lidl. We usually find everything we need there

Shop at Lidl for weekly shop. Occasionally go to Waitress or Tesco for things I can't get at Lidl I.e.baking stuff. Like the range and value. Like the fact it tends to be seasonal therefore different range of fruit and veg at different times of year. Meat good quality and value.

As above. Son likes the ham! Like the brands, good range and v good value. Generally cheaper for same quality or better. Also like the staff at our Lidl. Friendly and helpful. I also like that it is relatively small so I can get round it quickly and still get what I want like French roast coffee. Good wine too!

I do my weekly shop at Lidl but what I get elsewhere tends to be cream (to make icecrean and you tubs are tiny), creme fraiche (half fat) and baking stuff. Occasionally things like tofu.

HowDoYouPronounceJohn · 11/08/2017 23:26
  1. Usually Asda, as it's nearest. And then Tesco about once per month, as we regularly get discount vouchers through the post.
  1. Have a Lidl about a mile away, but have only been there once or twice. And think this was mainly to look at the Christmas stuff.
  1. Ours is smaller than the other big supermarkets, so assume would struggle to do our usual shop. I also like to make a list by looking online at everything available in store, current offers etc, and not sure the Lidl website would allow me to do this.

I usually go to Lidl for my main shop, however I find that if I don't go early enough in the day, the offers / fresh vegetables are lacking.

MiniTheMinx · 12/08/2017 01:50

Once a month we have a large Tesco delivery, because I insist on driving a silly car with a little boot. I don't like Tesco particularly but tinned and dried foods, toiletries and cleaning products are much the same wherever you buy them.

Weekly I rotate through coop, Waitrose, Lidl, and even Iceland. In the centre of town we have one of each.

I like several things from Lidl but I never buy vegetables. They are not fresh enough and have a very low shelf life. The meat is well priced and has always been very good.

If our Lidl was bigger, with a bigger range, and bigger selection of fresher vegetables I might shop there every week. The other reason I don't is the check out packing arrangement. No space.

there isnt one in our area.
I have never felt it had the range of products or quality at the narest one and staff were rather unpleasant.it felt uncomfortable being there.

MadameJosephine · 12/08/2017 09:00

I used to do my weekly shop at asda but recently changed to Aldi after a new one was built nearby and I'd read so much on here about how much money people had saved there. I'm very happy with the price and quality

I don't think I've ever actually been inside a Lidl store but I've just moved house and now there's a large one nearby so maybe I'll take a look. From what I've read online though I think most people prefer Aldi for quality and range if products

AgainstTheOddsNo2 · 12/08/2017 11:58

1.Mainly sainsburys

This due to range. Fresh fruit and veg and ease of access and parking.

  1. We do sometimes go to lidl as fruit and veg and the meat is very good and great price so we go when we want to stock up. We would like to go to lidl more but find it packed with a very long wait for the check out. This is stressful as parking time is extremely limited in your car park and we always feel under pressure. An extra 30 mins allowance would make it a lot more attractive as would longer opening hours so we could go "off peak" our local store is in a high st and have no interest in going when we have to fight with high st browsers too
Chestervase1 · 12/08/2017 12:48

I don't do a weekly shop. I may shop daily or several times a week. I do however buy several if something I use is on offer. I travel quite a bit and use whatever shop takes my fancy I am not loyal to any one brand. I love Lidl Maribel jam best I've ever bought. Also you frozen roulade desserts and your frozen crumbles are excellent.

TheSquatLobster · 12/08/2017 14:11

1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Lidl though, tbh, only because I've just moved from a big city with a brilliant Aldi to a small town which has a small (and rather tired-looking) Lidl but no Aldi.

2. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

Price, though I do like some products very much: big tubs of greek yogurt, loose salted almonds, good quality fruit & veg, continental meats & cheeses, one or two wines, cartons of passata. I quite like the speedy till service too, keeps me on my toes!

3. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

Even though I do my main shop there, it is frustrating that the range is limited & I have to top up elsewhere.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 12/08/2017 15:10

1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

I don't do one weekly shop, (no car and I walk to my local high street where all the shops are) I buy food 3/4 times a week. I go to any of the following - Lidl, Asda, Iceland, Tesco, Sainsbury's and local markets.

2. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

I buy a large proportion of my food from Lidl as it's mostly cheaper than other shops, I like the fact that there's fewer ranges so shopping is quicker.

3. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

I price check everything online before I buy it so will shop at other stores for things that are cheaper. I tend to get fruit and veg from my local market as I like to buy it loose rather than bagged and it's fresher than Lidl. I don't think the customer service is great in Lidl but I can accept that as it's so cheap!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

I usually go either to Sainsbury's, because I used the nectar scheme a lot and find that I can often get good offers there, or Morrisons because it is close to my home and easy to park & shop there with a small baby.

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience? N/A see below

The nearest Lidl to me is not particularly close and it is also in an area which is not especially pleasant to drive in. To be honest it is also just not the first store that comes to mind, even if I am looking to save money. I have shopped there previously and found that the brands I normally buy are not as easily available. However I would try it e.g. At Christmas as Lidl has a reputation for doing good specialty food at that time of year

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Aldi, it's local and I can get 98% of what I need. I love the range they have, everything is laid out methodically. I've used supermarket comparison and they always come out the very cheapest.

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

I don't go for my main shop but do top up there. I love their fresh tomatoes!

I can't get everything I need there and even though I know they sell certain things I can't find them because the layout is jumbled. Also I can save about £12 by going to aldi. I do love some of lidl products especially the bakery and fresh fruits.

shewhomustbeEbayed · 12/08/2017 18:22

Co-op for most of my shopping, I don't do a main shop but pop in there most days. I like the fact the meat is all sourced from the UK and I like the quality and range.
There are Lidl stores local to where I live and work but only pop into them for the odd thing as they don't sell the full range of everything I want.
When I lived in Hastings I used to shop in Lidl but it was quite intimidating due to the type of people who frequented it and their behaviour, lack of personal hygiene.

mrsRosaPimento · 12/08/2017 18:24

Aldi, its in my town and cheap. The fruit and veg tends to go mouldy within the week it's bought, so we top up at Sainsbury's or Waitrose.
We used to live near a Lidl and loved it. It has brands that sound European, so we felt like we were shopping abroad!Blush
It's too far away to drive. We love Lidl. The only flaw is the wine isn't as cheap as Aldi.

1moreRep · 12/08/2017 19:03

i shop at lidl mainly and top up at my co op- top up at the co op as it's literally a 5 min walk away and i love their loyalty card

my kids love lidl because of the squishy things originally and now it's because i treat them to a dough but. i like the prices - frozen fruit, fresh fruit veg and meat- i also love the cheese and the ready made lasangue.

items you should stock- thai curry paste, more spices, grains, lentils, quinoa, mackerel pate, wood pellets cat litter, raw fruit bars like the aldi paleo ones would be fantastic too
