Lidl has a couple of questions about your weekly shop that they’d love you to answer over the next 48 hours!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?
  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

Please post your thoughts below and one MNer will win a £50 Love2Shop voucher (note it will be 2x£25 vouchers, one per transaction).

Good luck with the prize draw!

  1. I go to Tesco mostly for my food shop, it's the store that I can get everything from. My second choice store is lidl so I go there sometimes too.
  2. On the times I do go to Lidl the reason is price is lower than Tesco.
  3. I don't go there more often as they don't have toilets... it's garenteed my 3 year old will need a wee during the shop and there's no toilets. The other reason is that you need a pound for trolleys... sometimes I have no change. Then there are occasionally products I use like baby milk and washing powder which I can only get in Tesco.
I do like Lidl though :)
juju3 · 09/08/2017 21:16

Main shop is Tesco - would like to shop more at Lidl but there is not one near

lifelongfrugaleer · 09/08/2017 21:19

Main shop is sainsbury and Aldi.

I tried shopping in Lidl but haven't been for a long while.

I prefer Aldi to Lidl tbh. Locally our Lidl had better fruit and veg than Aldi but not as good as sainsbury. I prefer Aldi for my cereal and cupboard stuff so I've stopped going. I would be prepared to try it again but there is nothing to draw me back there.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular? ocado for main shop and Tesco or asda for top ups depending on where we are when we need it.

We need have a number of foods that dd can't have certain ingredients and online shopping is quicker to get. Top up is dependent on how easy it s to get there.

1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?. My main shop is with Ocado because it saves me time & the biggest local supermarket is a understaffed Sainsbury's.

2. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience? N/A

Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?. There is a Lidl quite near us but I'd have to pass Waitrose, Sainsbury's, M&S & a Tesco's local to get there. I couldn't walk there & I can walk to all the others & to 2 butchers, a fishmongers, numerous bakers & fruit & veg stalls. Not worth the effort to go there.

I shop mostly in Sainsburys because I love the choice, customer care and quality. I top up in Iceland because I like lots of their frozen meat items, their biscuits and crisps are cheap and I love their cheese.I buy a few basics from Aldi.....pasta, toilet roll, rice....when quality doesn't really vary.

I choose not to shop at Lidl because there isn't enough choice, no customer care, it feels and smells tacky and goods are often packaged in larger amounts than I need.

I have never

I shop at waitrose as I don't drive and this is my nearest shop. About twice a month I go with my husband to Aldi to do a big shop. There is an Lidl but its further away and its really hard sometimes to get a parking space. I feel its a similar price to Aldi but not as convenient.

I always used to shop at asda (closest to me). Weekly shop started getting ridiculous -£150 +. Occasionally used Tesco and prefer this, but even more expensive.
About a year ago I switched to Lidl and Aldi. I alternate between the two. And my shopping is easily cut by at least £50. More often I can spend half of what i did before.
I spend less as Lidl and Aldi are smaller so less distractions (ie buying millions of offers that I didnt intend to or buying clothes etc). However,I still get great deals and we eat well. I now get virtually all of my shopping from. Lidl or aldi. I like the fact that my shopping time has also been reduced by easily half.
Im.lucky as I live near to asda, Tesco? M&s Lidl and Aldi and co op.And Morrisons not that far away.

emmmaaa26 · 09/08/2017 22:34

Ours is mainly Sainsburys because of convenience. We don't go to lidl that much as the don't sell enough to get a full shop.

TriHard27 · 09/08/2017 22:38

Our main shop is usually Tescos, mainly habit and convenience plus we have the credit card for petrol and collect the points etc.

I love Lidl for a browse / top up shop, great prices, decent quality fruit, flowers and meat much cheaper than other supermarkets and also a lot of unusual and lovely stuff you wouldn't necessarily find anywhere else.

The only drawbacks for us are:

  1. My husband buys a lot of branded items for his packed lunches which we can't always pick up there eg certain yoghurts and things like that.

  2. It can also be difficult to locate what you're looking for but this might just be because I'm not overly familiar with the store.

  3. Sometimes you can be after an item that just isn't stocked which limits us doing our full weekly / monthly shop there as we are lazy and time poor and tend to want to do our food shop in one main hit and top up as we go rather than traipse round two or three shops in one evening.

cluckyhen · 09/08/2017 22:42

Lidl isn't too far away for us and I did used to shop there weekly but since moving I find the new shop either sparse or jam packed. I also hate the checkout as there is only ever one person manning and I find him rude. I'd rather go elsewhere to be grunted at!

justanotherdowntroddenmass · 09/08/2017 23:22

For the general essentials we do a Lidl shop, price is the reason and the produce is usually fresher and better than the other stores. We try to make everything from fresh but the frozen things are great value just in case. We'll go to the local 'big' supermarket for the things we can't get.

(The local sourced steaks are amazing!)

GeorgeW78 · 09/08/2017 23:31

We have our groceries delivered because we only have one car so it's just easier rather than waste the weekend. We shop in Lidl occasionally but it's usually to browse & try a few new things rather than a main shop. I don't think there is the range to do a full shop there and I have found the quality of the fresh produce varies quite a lot so wouldn't want to go all there way there & then have to go somewhere else.

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 10/08/2017 00:34

1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Tesco delivery. I don't drive so a delivery service is perfect, I love the convenience. Tesco own brand products are always good and good value.

2. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

I've only been in my local Lidl once and it's only 10 mins away Blush

I don't try going in for my weekly shop because I assume I won't be able to get everything I need. (Toiletries etc.)
I don't see the point of going to more than one shop.

toopeoply · 10/08/2017 06:39

. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Tesco, because of the range of items and its closest. Very occasionally Lidl, especially if there is something in the Thursday specials that I want to get.

Probably just the range, i.e cheese, fizzy drinks, some brands. The food is quite diverse, just not necessarily diverse in the way I want it. I don't tend to buy fresh fruit or veg from Lidl. I love the bakery bit but hate tiger bread and often that's all that's left. PlUs the checkout system is quite stressful, and queues are long. I prefer self checkout definitely.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Usually asda because the fruit and veg is lovely, the meat is good and the prices are reasonable.

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

I don't go to Lidl for my weekly shop.

I don't go to Lidl for my weekly shop as I feel the quality is not consistent, especially with the meat. I have repeatedly had meat go off way before the use by date, especially chicken. This is the factor that made me stop shopping at lidl as the saving were not worth the risk of food poisoning. The fruit and veg is ok most of the time, but I do not feel there is enough choice and I would often come away without enough fruit and veg. I feel the store cupboard and bakery items are brilliant, but it isnt worth my time to come just for those.

Ikea1234 · 10/08/2017 08:32

Our weekly shop is in Asda; we have tried all the supermarkets in our small, semi rural town, and Asda is the biggest and cheapest. We do have a Lidl, and it has just had a refurb, but the parking can be horrific, and I find queueing at the tills (there's usually only one or two open) a pain. We also found it didn't have everything we wanted and sounded up shopping elsewhere the same week too. At Asda, we have compared prices (and pack sizes!) and find our money goes so much further.
That said, we have just returned from a holiday in The Netherlands, and the Lidl there was great. We barbecued every night, and their meat was amazing (sadly, very different to what we can buy in our local Lidl) and the food choice was great - cereal dispensers where you bought by weight, fabulous huge bakery, great frozen food, and a vast fresh selection. We did all our shopping there!

northender · 10/08/2017 09:09

I split my weekly shop between Booths & Aldi. Aldi because I like the quality and price and I like the limited choice ie not having to stand for 10 minutes weighing up the relative value of 10 different types of tinned tomatoes. Booths because it's local and has lots of local links and suppliers.

I love the fresh bakery products at Lidl but in general prefer aldi. Initially (quite a few years ago) my choice of aldi was down to the fact that it was closer and so more convenient than lidl

beckyinman · 10/08/2017 10:29

I get a Sainsbury's delivery for my main shop then a Tesco express for top ups. I would probably give Lidl a go but don't have a car and there isn't one in walking distance

OnMyShoulders · 10/08/2017 10:44
  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Asda, cause it's my closest supermarket and probably the cheapest of the supermarkets we have locally.

For exactly all the reasons listed in the question.

grannycake · 10/08/2017 10:49

Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

I alternate my weekly shop between Aldi and Lidl. The reason for this is that there are certain things I can only get at one or other of them . I like the frozen fruit, fishcakes and special buys from Aldi, the yoghurt, fruit & vegetables and clothing special buys from Lidl.

2 If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

Price, quality and choice

They don't stock frozen blueberries or very many baking ingredients - otherwise I think they are great although I wish they would bring back the buckets of turkish yoghurt.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
I get my weekly shop delivered by Tesco, I buy their annual delivery saver. I use them as they have a wide range, and after trying all the large supermarkets they are the most consistent in terms of being on time, no weird replacements etc.. I never do an in shop weekly shop as I don't have the time (work long hrs)

My 2 local Lidl shops are tiny, they are always insanely busy and if you go any later than about 10am, there is nothing on the shelves!! The queues are usually very long, the shops are cramped and just had to navigate (always lots of palates of goods in the aisles) I actually really like lidls products and would shop there if I had more time/patience!
BLISS2004 · 10/08/2017 14:34

I don't shop at Lid regularly as other supermarket is more convenient for me.
However, I find the smoked salmon and smoked mackerel pretty good value and the avocados are usually good too.

sm2012 · 10/08/2017 14:41
  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular? I go to Tesco to do my main weekly shop as I find it easy to use their click and collect or home delivery plus I find the clubcard vouchers really useful.

I've though about using Lidl as it would I think be cheaper but I think I would also end up having to go to another shop to get certain branded things that we use and like.
