Lidl has a couple of questions about your weekly shop that they’d love you to answer over the next 48 hours!

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?
  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?
  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

Please post your thoughts below and one MNer will win a £50 Love2Shop voucher (note it will be 2x£25 vouchers, one per transaction).

Good luck with the prize draw!

My weekly shop is split between Asda and Aldi. Asda for the range of foods, Aldi for the cheap stuff (but I can't do a full shop there). Sometimes do a top up in Tesco for things I can't get elsewhere. I occasionally pop into Lidl but it's out of the way for me and the other shops are more conveniently located. I did like the fresh bread and cakes from the bakery there though. A better range of vegetarian foods would tempt me to go to Lidl more often.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular

We've been using Lidl for years. Went when we were quite poor and found it so much cheaper than everywhere else but with a good choice of all we needed (including the best nappies of anywhere.!)

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

price was our original reason, but then we pretty quickly found we liked it all too. We love the wine and beers, the meat is great value and tasty and the basics are really good ( veg, tins, cleaning stuff etc)

And of course, there is always the aisle of wonder. How often can you buy a coffee maker, cement mixer and clothes horse when you only went in for coffee

  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why? Is it because your nearest one is too far away? Is it because the range of food isn’t diverse enough? Are there items that you can’t get in Lidl that you can get elsewhere?

We always do our main shop there. reasons we go elsewhere include branded stuff that we want (coffee pods for dulce gusts for example, or particular breakfast cereals) or we just happen to be closer (local Tesco is also near a chemist)

we go to asda sainsburys tesco,s costco & machro,s Lidl is to far away

RaeSkywalker · 09/08/2017 17:39
  1. Aldi. This is due to prices, location (close to Dh's work so he can go there in the evening), and how good they nappies are.
  2. N/A
  3. It's just because we started using Aldi nappies and like them, so travel to get the nappies, and do a food shop whilst there.

I go between Lidl and Asda depending on my health as Asda delivers so will go there if not up to carrying bags etc. I like Lidl for price, bakery and range. Asda is ok but only really use it for delivery.

As above, love the bakery section, the price and range of products. There is a new store in central Scotland which is large, lots of parking and room to move around. The fruit and veg is particularly good compared to Aldi and the staff seem to care more too.

As above only use Asda if i need delivery

I love Lidl but unfortunately my town hasn't got one so I go to Aldi for my main shop as it the prices are reasonable but love getting to the nearest Lidl when I get the chance as I love their selection and the fact that they have an instore bakery and everything is so cheap but good quality.

ErinSophia · 09/08/2017 18:16

I shop at Lidl because the quality is amazing! The prices are very reasonable and even my 2 year old daughter who is a fussy eater enjoys the food. The staff are always helpful which takes some of the stress out of doing the weekly shopping.

7flipper7 · 09/08/2017 18:31

We do our main shop in Lidl due to the consistency good prices, value of fruit and bread, tasty cheese, good priced chicken breasts and my kids favourite pizza. It is a simple no fuss shop and I would prefer things stacked on palettes rather than have to pay extra on each item for staff to unload like other stores. The weekend deals can also be good value.

ProfYaffle · 09/08/2017 18:33

I do my main shop in Aldi because it's nearby, the prices and quality are excellent.

The only reason I don't shop at Lidl is it's too far away. Before Aldi opened in my town I travelled to Lidl but don't bother now. I do miss some of the Lidl products though.

IvyWall · 09/08/2017 18:44
  1. We shop online with Ocado and Asda. We shop in person at Lidl as well as top ups at Asda or Tesco.
  2. We shop at Lidl because of attrive price and good quality food. The bakery is a special favourite. Also love the deli meats and cheeses.
  3. I can do a main shop at Lidl, but can't get some products or brands there, so also shop elsewhere. Brands include Unearthed and Birdseye. Products include extra fine beans and flat (helda) beans.
IvyWall · 09/08/2017 18:48

Whoops. That is supposed to say attractive price in point 2.

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

Usually Sainsbury's, but am very fortunate in that I have about 7 or 8 decent supermarkets all within a short drive to choose from. My reason for going there hinges largely on what journey I am on or what time I have before collecting my daughter from nursery.

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

If I can do a weekly shop there, price is a big factor as is the range and quality of fresh food items and also some of the dry/larder goods

  1. If you don’t go to Lidl, for your main weekly shop, please tell us why?

Because I can never manage to get everything I need in there. A children's milk such as the ARLA Big Milk and other household/branded items I have been unable to find decent alternatives in Lidl for. Queuing/lack of staff is also a massive issue, I often go in the evenings too and it is even worse then and so frustrating to queue to pay.... All in all though, I really do like Lidl, just wish some of the ranges could be expanded upon.

humblesims · 09/08/2017 18:55

I. I do my weekly shop mainly at Lidl and Aldi
2.My reasons for shopping at Lidl is that the choice is good but the biggest factor is price. I like that there isnt so much choice as the other supermarkets, it means I just get what I need.

CishAndFips · 09/08/2017 19:00

I do my main shop at aldi. I find it very good value for money. The quality is amazing. The lay out is very well organised and it's local.

On the occasions I have shopped at Lidil I have found that although it is good value for money and good quality it is quite disorganised.

The things that would make me switch to Lidil would be the option to shop in store and have it delivered. I have used Iceland a few times for this reason.

cathryn1 · 09/08/2017 19:12

I like sainsburys -staff are very helpful and always open a till each week if there is a queue.

mamma2016 · 09/08/2017 19:32

1: main shop at Sainsbury's- I have a nectar credit card, nectar card, it's close to home and they sell all the branded products I need. I go to Sainsbury's once or twice a month.

2: almost all my other shopping is done at Lidl- it's a 5 min walk from my house! I love the bakery, veg and a lot of the fruit. I go to Lidl a few times a week. Generally find everything I need. Sometimes get frustrated when the queues build up and the potatoes always seem to go green quickly but other than that, pretty good!

3: I live with a fussy eater and he likes certain brands of pizza etc. Plus some bits (free range whole chicken, quiches, gluten free bread) aren't available at my Lidl.

dragon60 · 09/08/2017 19:36

I vary from shop to shop, so over the month can pick up the different offers at each shop.

Benone · 09/08/2017 19:40

We go once to Lidl, one to Sainbury's per week. The reason we choose Lidl is it's handy and price. We don't rely on it alone as there are some things we can't buy at Lidl. Often find the fruit and veg doesn't last well.

Tigger83 · 09/08/2017 19:50
  1. Use Tesco for our main weekly shop because it's the biggest supermarket locally and they deliver. Do top up shops at m&s and Waitrose for quality and different products
  1. Not a Lidl that local but I do pop in to one when I pass. I find quality variable and variety not wide enough or consistent enough for a weekly shop.

Would love online option for convenience

  1. Thinking about your main weekly shop, where do you go? And why do you go there in particular?

I haven't had a "main" shop for years! I shop in different shops for certain items depending on price and family preferences

  1. If you go to Lidl for your main weekly shop, what are your main reasons for going there? Are any of the following a reason: price / range / brands / shopping experience?

Lidls is one of the shops I use. I love the fresh meat, the pre-packed cold meat, the wines and spirits and toiletries. I also love the fresh bakery products

There are a few items that I do not get in Lidls, particularly the fresh veg as I have tried it a few times but prefer Morrison's fresh fruit and veg

bex552 · 09/08/2017 20:32

We go to Aldi, because it is closer than our local lidl. We previously always shopped at lidl. I always find the car park is really busy in lidl, the closest one in our town doesn't have its own car park but it is next to an expensive multi storey car park so i avoid this as i don't like to pay. The Lidl in the next town the car park is always busy, sometimes cars are queuing on the road to get in so this puts me off! i do however love the fresh bakery goods form lidl, especially the cheese twists! Yum! So we do 1 out of 4 weekly shops at lidl :)

ThanksForAllTheFish · 09/08/2017 20:33

I vary which shop I use for my main weekly shop. I use mainly Tesco, Aldi or Lidl. Occasionally I go to Sainsburys but not very often as I don't drive and rely on public transport and it is the least convenient to get to.

I like going to Lidl as the range of food is great for the price. I like the continental cold meats and cheese. I do like the fresh meat but have found it sometimes goes off 2/3 days before the date in the pack which isn't great. My daughter really loves Lidl tinned ravioli so I like to have a stick of them in the cupboard for easy lunches. Lidl doesn't always stock particular foods or items I want so that is why I switch up my weekly shop - I would say I shop at Lidl every 3rd or 4th week. I am sometimes swayed to go in more ferequently if there is a particular item I want from the middle section (one of the highlights of shopping at Lidl).

I would say I probably visit Tesco the most often of all the supermarkets just because I am a 5 minute walk from a very large Tesco extra. I don't need to get a bus so it is just more convenient than Lidl or Aldi which are both a 15 minute bus ride away. I do however really notice the price difference so that is why I do go out my way to add both Lidl and Aldi into my weekly shop rotation.

Flanderspigeonmurderer · 09/08/2017 20:38

At the moment we use Tesco online with delivery. We do this because I have a young baby and an older child and it's the most convenient way for me.

I used to shop at Lidl every week, there is one just down the road from me. But I knew when the baby came that online shopping would be easier. I will definitely go back to shopping at Lidl once the baby is a bit older, the savings are too great not to. Tesco is much more expensive but for the time being I need to have the shopping delivered.

1 Lidl. Because it's cheap and good quality.

2 I like my local Lidls (I regularly shop in four different ones) and the different themed stuff every week. The staff are usually polite and friendly and all of the stores have recently had refurbs so they look nicer now too. I like other Lidl customers too; my local Tesco is like a magnet for assholes.

  1. Lidl's range can sometimes be a bit limited but I top up on spices and other more specialist stuff from Amazon. And Lidl car parks are a bit weird IME. Tiny spaces, tight corners, and buggers to get out of onto the main road.
