We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I put pesto and tomato puree on toast with cheese on top which isn't unusual for me but I was starving and didn't do it properly so there was far too much pesto, the cheese (cheddar as I didn't have mozzarella) wasn't melted enough and certainly wasn't browned and the bread was too lightly toasted so it went limp and soggy. Also it was ordinary sliced white, which was tasteless and textureless. The whole thing was cold, greasy and vile.

Omg just thought - Brown sauce on toast with loads of cheese on top, now that is amazing

mummy81 · 21/06/2017 19:36

Mackeral in tomatoe sauce straight out the tin eaten with bread and butter!

Once, during some improvements in the kitchen, a big pan drawer opened by itself and wedged the kitchen door shut from the inside, meaning we literally couldn't get in to the kitchen! We tried everything to push the drawer in with the 1 inch of space we did get.. coat hangers, golf clubs, really big sticks. For over an hour we struggled (by this time it was about 8pm!) and we did just as Deliveroo suggested and got a takeaway. This was in the dark days before deliveroo was in our area however. The drawer finally unwedged with a mighty shove from DP and his friend the next day but lucky we got a takeaway otherwise it would have been carpet fluff and sofa crumbs for dinner!

In an emergency I once made Fridge Pasta - cooked pasta mixed with grated cheese, tinned sweet corn and a tin of hotdog sausages. It was declared 'awesome' and is now asked for regularly. 😊

sbruin1122 · 21/06/2017 20:42

bread and butter! lol

Belmo · 21/06/2017 20:59

My worst - although it wasn't so much emergency food as just a total fail - was biriyani made with arborio rice. Curry risotto - bleehhh.

Kem99 · 21/06/2017 21:47

I usually just reach for a bowl of cereal and have been known to end up with rusks in hot milk, which are actually very yummy.

smithsurvey14 · 21/06/2017 22:51

Fish fingers and mushy peas, we had no bread or oven chips left.

lynsmagoo · 21/06/2017 23:10

I have toasties bags for the toaster. If I'm rushing I'll put some cheese and ham in a sandwich, throw it in the toaster bag and pop it in the toaster. So easily cleaned as well!

sweir1 · 21/06/2017 23:15

beef burger sandwiches

Tortiepops · 21/06/2017 23:17

Pasta with mustard. Never again!

fivekidsonemum · 22/06/2017 00:03

I didn't have any butter to add to my packet of ready cheese pasta and the shop was closed so I tried spraying the pasta with cooking oil before adding the milk to see if it'd work and was nearly sick, it was disgusting - ahh the young single life when you don't bother to restock Before everything runs out! mamof3boys · 22/06/2017 10:32

A bowl of dry coco pops as there's no milk!

theresamustgo · 22/06/2017 10:53

Tried to make a cheesy roux with some indeterminate type of marg. Turned out like cheesy flour and water glue.

jessiecat33 · 22/06/2017 11:44

Cold leftover rice mixed up with salad cream topped with fish fingers x

angiehoggett · 22/06/2017 13:01

leftover homemade rice pudding tastes great with a tin of custard the next day, sound weird but lovely!

Crumble67 · 22/06/2017 13:14

When I first got together with my DC I threw together some cold leftover pasta with a tin of anchovies and added salt for flavouring which I new he added to everything. I wasn't sure whether the coughing was from the little bones or slightly overdoing the salt!

Crumble67 · 22/06/2017 13:15

Oops meant DH

SymphonyofShadows · 22/06/2017 15:14

I'd get a takeaway but Deliveroo only deliver to the naicest parts of town

Falconhoof1 · 22/06/2017 15:26

Spaghetti with tomato ketchup.

Buxtonstill · 22/06/2017 17:51

I had got a home made steak and ale pie from the freezer, and lovingly prepared veg, roast potatoes, and gravy.
Only it was apple.....
I opened a tin of corned beef which went very strangely with all the hot trimmings!

stealthsquiggle · 22/06/2017 17:59

We used to specialise in one pan meals at college - one friend lived mainly on boiled eggs and peas (cooked at the same time, in the same pan). I have never gone that far, but pasta with peas and chopped up frankfurter added towards the end, and then pesto/pasta sauce/Philadelphia/butter (depending on availability) stirred through is filling and not entirely disgusting. I may have been known to feed it to my DC occasionally

keri2001 · 22/06/2017 18:02

I was sooo hungry, even more so as I was 7 months pregnant with twins. Sent the OH to get a pizza and goodies and was really looking forward to it. Just as I heard his car pull up, my waters broke! I was scared but also starving. We dropped my son off at my Mums via the hospital and I quickly grabbed some food out of her fridge - leftover cold vegetables and some COLD curry! I can't say it was the best, but hey I was that hungry I would've eaten anything.

iwasyoungonce · 22/06/2017 19:29

When I was a poor uni student I once ate a dinner of jacket potato with a whole cabbage (shredded and boiled).

It was not the tastiest meal... and the wind... Shock
