We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I used to live on beanfeast and grilled frozen ciabatta in my poor youth.

I have never tried deliveroo, I live at the top of a huge hill, I don't think it's fair on the cyclists...

Shortly after I met my husband I made him a Sunday lunch but the mash potato was too runny. I panicked and for some strange reason i tried to thicken it with flour!

It was obviously gross and the hubby still likes to tell that story 13 years later!!

Olives on toast as the student - when I discovered there's nothing to eat, too far to walk and do shopping. In difficult situation you try experiment with food. I could make a mean meal from mashed potatoes - with tomato sauce, salad cream and radish.

Roast or stir fried random sorry forgotten-in-the-fridge veggie surprise!

JemIsMyNameNooneElseIsTheSame · 22/06/2017 21:52

Baked beans on crumpets with a few slices of cucumber as a garnish.

As a student I ate a lots of cheese slice and potato waffle sandwiches (they're surprisingly nice). These days I rely on my freezer to feed the family when we'e short of time of having some sort of crisis. My husband did once make the kids bolognese flavour Beanfeast, they cried then sloped off to bed to avoid it. They really appreciated my bolognese the next time I made it.

Sardine curry. Yes with tinned sardines in tomato sauce. It wasn't actually too bad.

Rice cakes with butter and a sliced raw onion. Just rubbish really.

Pasta with baked beans and cheese. I thought it might substitute for a sauce. It didn't.

I can actually cook, honest!

Only yesterday I tucked into a cheese & pickled onion monster munch sandwich - no nutritional value whatsoever (I even had the gall to use white bread!) but it did the trick when I came in late from work, too tired & hot to consider cooking anything - luckily my husband was out dropping LO at scouts, so I could enjoy this little guilty pleasure without the fear of judgement!

gemmie797 · 22/06/2017 23:23

Marmite and banana on toast

Thisarmingman · 22/06/2017 23:41

Just remembered another - fish fingers and rice (no chips or potatoes in the house).

Stephgr8 · 23/06/2017 01:44

cereal out of the box with evaporated milk, cold soup which is meant to be served hot eaten straight out of the packaging, fish paste eaten with a spoon straight out of the jar and followed by biscuits dipped into a tin of sweetened condensed milk. Oh dear.

cnut · 23/06/2017 10:05

Beans are just great, full of goodness, so easy and quick, lovely

asuwere · 23/06/2017 10:47

I made a quick macaroni with Philadelphia but figured I'd make it look better by adding some breadcrumbs and sticking under the grill. Unfortunately I picked up the wrong bag from the freezer so we had pasta with sweet crumble mix - not very tasty!

Not really inventive or weird, but once I spent hours cooking this North African dish but I had the wrong kind of pasta and frankly, it was gross. It was so gross my mother actually threw up. So I had to throw it away and we all had a bowl of cereal for dinner. Much safer!

ridingsixwhitehorses · 23/06/2017 15:32

When the lid fell off the pepper and a while pepper pot fell in the casserole I had been gently boiled for hours. Ruined in a moment.

happysouls · 23/06/2017 15:39

Well, my emergency is a planned one (if there's such a thing).
For those times when I simply can't be bothered to cook anything.
It's tinned potatoes, eaten with salad. And salad cream.
It's delicious.
1970s cuisine it might be, but its yum!

Madwoman5 · 23/06/2017 17:08

Last minute birthday cake........two digestive biscuits (stale from the bottom of the tin) sandwiched together with chocolate spread with a chocolate spread and sprinkles topping in a blob that supported the single candle. serious birthday fail.

IrishGuineas · 23/06/2017 18:02

Cold Yorkshire puddings with jam.

NeverTwerkNaked · 23/06/2017 22:49

We scraped together an emergency meal after a holiday and felt quite bad presenting it to the children, but astonishingly they all loved it so much that now it is a regular "quick" meal - rice, baked beans, and fried bacon /ham/pepperoni ...
