We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Not so awful as lots of people do it but I felt like the worlds worst mother-porridge made with water for tea! We had just got back so late on a Sunday night, nowhere open, no car and no food in the house!

Cailin7 · 20/06/2017 22:33

left overs put into a stir fry

kateandme · 21/06/2017 04:08

salad cream on pasta
salad cream sandwhich
spaghetti hoops from the tin
tin of chickpeas chucked into a bottle of dolmio pasta sauce (lovely actually.)

cwalliss82 · 21/06/2017 05:14

Fish finger sandwiches are my emergency food as it is quick and easy as I can do other things whilst the fish fingers are cooking.

Pinkiepromisex · 21/06/2017 08:10

Jacket potatoes and hash browns!!

phillie1 · 21/06/2017 08:36

Cheap pasta with ketchup - kept me alive as a student

zippyants · 21/06/2017 10:59

Crisp butty with mayonnaise (actually quite nice though I have to say!).

EmilyK83 · 21/06/2017 12:23

Oh god, all sorts, haha! Gherkins wrapped in slices of ham (or eaten straight from the jar) is a favourite, or a tin of tomatoes mixed with a tin of kidney beans and some curry powder to make a storecupboard curry when I can't be bothered to cook or go shopping...

Fl0ellafunbags · 21/06/2017 12:51

Mashed potatoes mixed with pureed apricots. I thought the potato was cooked apple, it wasn't quite the dessert I was planning. No wonder DD is so fussy and suspicious around food.

Our emergency meal is nicknamed
"You shouldn't have put it back in the freezer"

Its just all those odd things - single burgers...escapee sausages
1/8 bag of chips - two croquettes (I swear I never actually buy those - so why these always a couple in the freezer bewilders me) some slightly frost damaged vegetables and the occasional remains of party type nibbles and "stuff on sticks" that didn't get cooked with the rest of the meal it came with because the box didn't fit in the freezer and that bit went stray..
Arrange delicately on a serving platter throw into the middle of the table wave a wilted yellow parsley plant in the general direction of the ..erm...feast? and serve with lashings of really strong condiments.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 21/06/2017 14:14

Toast, balsamic vinegar and some basil leaves - this actually ended up being a bit lush!

ShakingAndShocked · 21/06/2017 15:00

Me to then 19 yr old DS: "I'm going to be later than planned tonight so you'll need to cook some pasta - make enough for everyone and you choose what* to have with it ok?"

*meaning add jar of just pasta sauce to it; cooking mince for full spag bog; or bung salmon fillets in oven; or, or, or...any of the many options we have available...

DS to me: "yeah, cool, no problem"

Get home to: pasta with chopped soggy warmed banana and pesto sauce Shock

k8vincent · 21/06/2017 15:13

Cold chips accidentally left in the oven.

donnatella110 · 21/06/2017 15:22

Sliced raw carrot, a boiled egg and peanut butter dip..... as a student though I have to agree super noodle sandwiches or mushy pea sandwiches were the best!

MakeTeaNotWar · 21/06/2017 15:25

Crisp sandwiches, plain cooked pasta, cold beans straight from the tin, chunks of cheddar cheese

RupertsMum2 · 21/06/2017 15:30

Haggis toasties are the way to go!

Moomin37 · 21/06/2017 15:31

Egg curry! Hard boiled eggs, a jar of curry sauce and microwave rice - yum 😀

Elliepurpleflower · 21/06/2017 15:47

One time we had vegetables with gravy, then realised we needed more food so had couscous with it... couscous and gravy was one we won't be repeating, We have had lots of weird and wonderful things!

Rachmolly80 · 21/06/2017 16:17

In my adult life there have been a few. It must have been too much month not enough money often! I remember having just enough bran flakes left for dinner ?! But no milk but I did have some of that milk creamer powder stuff so I tried to make 'milk' by mixing it with water. The part watery part lumpy mix was fooling nobody.

dry weetabix spread with baking Marge and the last of the jam was another. I didn't have any bread or any butter or any money that time either. Oh well I lived ! (Just)

Ikea1234 · 21/06/2017 17:38

Bacon sandwiches.

At two.

In the morning.

Whilst pregnant.

I would have eaten the bacon raw, I was so desperate!

CupOfTeaAndAGoodBook · 21/06/2017 17:56

Lazy toastie: Make toast. Slice cheese. Clap the whole thing together so the cheese can attempt to melt.
We had no butter or anything else around except mayo so dipped it in that.
Tasted okay-ish, but I wouldn't repeat it!

Tean1 · 21/06/2017 17:56

Garlic bread and tinned spaghetti - could be worse!

CheeseEMouse · 21/06/2017 18:05

I think the worst was runner beans alongside pasta. Horrible in almost every way.

HalimaB · 21/06/2017 18:12

Bread with butter and jam

Tryingtoconceive2years · 21/06/2017 18:55

Boil spaghetti, drain, then add butter, Parmesan, and finely chopped herbs with a couple of tablespoons of the pasta water.

Boil pasta, add butter, grated cheese, and black pepper, then crack a raw egg over top and stir everything together until you have a creamy sauce - like a fake carbonara

Macaroni cheese but add chorizo and lardons to the mix and then add salami as a topping with cheese.

Can you tell I love carbs?
