We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

toast and a cup of tea

Vonklump · 20/06/2017 18:06

Crisp sandwiches. Preferably cheese and onion. With butter.

Or a mozzarella ball.

Some people find this really odd, but our national breakfast in india, is parahta, generally served with live yoghurt and spice pickled chutney. So although I'm not from India, my grandparents were, and eating an Indian for breakfast is very normal in a lot of Asian households that I personally know of So the next time you order a curry, see if you can handle the leftovers for breakfast?

i made a roast dinner but only had beef burgers so made a roast with them

Fantasticmissfoxy · 20/06/2017 18:25

My drunken starving student go-to meal was Chicken super noodles on top of cheese on toast (white plastic bread) with crushed up salt and vinegar crisps on top 😳. Absolutely amazing.... in fact I think I might have to nip to the shops tomorrow to recreate it!

confuugled1 · 20/06/2017 18:33

My mother still gets teased about the time she defrosted a pork joint for sunday lunch from the freezer when we had some guests coming - back in the day when shops were still shut on sundays...

Only to discover to her horror that she hadn't defrosted the nice joint she thought she had but a pack of pigs trotters (dad was friendly with farmer and butcher and we would end up with half a pig in the freezer, she didn't buy them. usually they went to my gran who used them for her dog's meal - she used to cook for him, including veg, every day, as she didn't believe in tinned dog food). We ended up going out for lunch that day Grin

Baked beans on couscous.

Or spaghetti with sweet corn and whatever cheese I could find in the fridge.

Wellmeetontheledge · 20/06/2017 19:15

Porridge oats with tinned tuna!

IonaAilidh11 · 20/06/2017 19:17

super noodles on toast

Ashhead24 · 20/06/2017 19:18

Cheese and courgette toastie, surprisingly delicious. Deliveroo don't deliver to us either, would really love them to.

Therealslimshady1 · 20/06/2017 19:20

Pasta with butter

If you boil the pasta in heavily salted water, and add a generous amount of butter, it tastes lovely! Nutritional value probably about zero Grin but my teens love "emergency pasta"

stefalfie11 · 20/06/2017 19:32

My biggest emergency food failure has to be own brand super noodles on toast. I was starving but it tasted okay at the time but definitely isn't something that i'd like to repeat!

sosotalk · 20/06/2017 20:21

Carrots. Literally just carrots on a plate.

ProfAnnieT · 20/06/2017 20:24

Tuna and mayonnaise. No bread. Or ketchup sandwiches when there is bread but nothing else to put in it. Not the most nutritionally balanced...

honeyandginger48 · 20/06/2017 20:25

My dad once made us plain pasta with tomato ketchup mixed in. It was horrible!

madge47 · 20/06/2017 20:46

Salad cream sandwich

Byrdie · 20/06/2017 20:55

Bahhhhaaa! So many to choose! There was that time I made the kids eat cereal (ok, that was more than once!), or when I made a lovely boiled egg, cracker and small wrinkled apple dinner... or more recently when I whipped up a yoghurt, bear yoyo and tortilla feast!!! The 'tortilla' sounds like I actually made something... but no, it was just a pack of tortillas I opened. Plain and dry. The kids, unsurprisingly, are always really excited when we get take away! (Usually scream for it at least once a week)

Beeziekn33ze · 20/06/2017 20:57

My omelette needed a filling so I microwaved a ball of frozen spinach and added nutmeg.
My late night guilty secret is Ryvita (healthy!) spread with peanut butter and thick cut marmalade. My VLNGS is when there's no marmalade so I 'have to' top the peanut butter with chocolate spread. Mmmm!

Beeziekn33ze · 20/06/2017 21:05

ProAnnie - my DGD likes tuna, sweetcorn, and mayo eaten with a spoon. No enforced baked potato or bread, she regards it as a treat!
She also loves corned beef mashed into potato, won't entertain a proper hash with onion and herbs added!
We both like a baguette with Brie and banana. Hers MUST be Cornish Brie and, yes she can tell the difference. Devon Brie is near but not good enough! I'll eat any Brie or even Camembert in my banana baguette!

Carriecakes80 · 20/06/2017 21:10

I think our quickest weird meal is peanut butter and beetroot sarnies! They are the ONLY sandwich the whole family like...either that or peanut butter with mint sauce on toast! When I tell people they say it sounds like a pregnancy craving lol, but no, they are actually blooming lovely! xxx

littleme96 · 20/06/2017 21:11

Cold leftover yorkshire puddings with golden syrup

KatnissMellark · 20/06/2017 21:29

Microwave sausages Envy

claza93 · 20/06/2017 21:41

Crisp and peanut butter sarnie covered in salad cream - not proud of it haha but it fills a gap and is kind of nutritious

Zoflorabore · 20/06/2017 22:00

Tin of salmon with Doritos crushed into them- disgusting Grin
