It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

We actually do love the lunchbox loaves for on the go as they're so convenient, they don't make a mess and the kids love them! Similarly snacks like scotch pancakes are really good. We also take things like fruit, maybe little sandwiches if it's a particularly long journey :)

flamingtoaster · 14/04/2017 20:07

The snacks we take (only eaten when stopped, not when the car is moving) are: homemade glutenfree/milkfree/eggfree muffins, bananas, still water, cereal bars, biscuits.

alabaster-I thought it was more that you couldn't get to them quickly that was more the risk, so you would have to pull over, get them out the car seat, etc and you might not notice straight away as driving.
The same way you wouldn't leave a baby/young child eating unsupervised.
Also if you had break sharply/crashed while they were eating they may be more likely to choke?
I could be wrong though.

Dried Fruit and Nuts as they don't tend to smell when they inevitably end up in the nooks and crannies of the car!

Sorry I misunderstood. I thought that this thread was about children and not babies? Incidentally, nothing from ROSPA about dangers of choking in cars.....

freefan · 14/04/2017 20:37

I am lucky that my toddlers/children like fruit and veg so i find taking raisin/apricot snack bags along with spaghetti raw carrots and ready cubed tomato and cucumber with bottles of water are the ideal light snacks for travelling with minimal mess :)

stefalfie11 · 14/04/2017 20:58

We take lots of different bits and bobs e.g. packs of raisins, carrot sticks, rice cakes, chocolate buttons and cereal bar

Lisapaige24 · 14/04/2017 21:10

I don't allow eating in the car I pack a picnic of sandwiches, fruit ,yoghurt and stop off for a break every few hours for food and toilet breaks but I don't buy fast food or food from services as it's too expensive for a family of 7 so we have picnic food until we get to the destination and then go for a nice meal at a proper restaurant.

twinklenicci · 14/04/2017 21:22

My youngest loves grapes but i don't like giving them to her in the car incase she chokes , for the car she usually has crisps or an apple

moosexxx · 14/04/2017 21:26

Water, or cartoons of juice to drink. For snacks the main thing we try to do is keep them 'contained' so anything that can be put in a tuperware box.
Sweets, to fruit.

beckyinman · 14/04/2017 21:30

We have pots and pots of tupperware - a favourite is thinly sliced banana with peanut butter sandwiched between and held together with some melted chocolate, but we also have boxes of raisins, grapes, homemade sundried tomatoes, then often a box of celebrations!

Rainbowsaretoo · 14/04/2017 21:46

Sun bites, apples and fruit bread! Like clockwork!

thesockgap · 14/04/2017 21:48

We don't do in-car snacks, as my youngest suffers from terrible car sickness. If we're going on a journey of more than about 2 hours, we'll make a stop and grab something to eat, but other than that they have to wait till we get there!

RACHELSMITH45 · 14/04/2017 22:04

Usually dry foods such as fruit wiggles, handy and healthy, also easy to eat on the go! The kids also love them and they are 1 of their 5 a day, bonus!! Sometimes pack sandwiches if we are stopping midway and travelling through lunch time. We tend to stop off at the services to eat these and get out of the car... otherwise crumbs everywhere!!

StrawberryDaiquiriDooDah · 14/04/2017 22:06

My DS takes one of the mini banana Soreen loaves with him every time we leave the house, whether we're going on a long car journey or just walking to the shop. He absolutely loves them! He loves the little characters on the packet and thinks they're Minions Smile

sharmanda · 14/04/2017 22:06

I always make sure I have healthy snacks for my children when we go out in the car.I tend to have mini packs of breadsticks, kiddilicious fruit wafers, rice cakes. These are all in foil packs and mostly in individual packs so easy to take out with you and they don't take up much space either.

LeeR1985 · 14/04/2017 22:09

I chop up apples and bananas into little resealable tupperware tubs and usually throw some grapes in there too. Similar to the little bags you can buy in tesco for 50p

pfcpompeysarah · 14/04/2017 22:10

My son is very travel sick so we try not to take too many long journeys or eat whilst travelling, however if it is strictly necessary then we take snacks such as dry foods like tortilla chips, cracker breads, or ginger biscuits which are good for fighting nausea & sickness.

kittykomp · 14/04/2017 23:00

Snacks that don't make a mess

slithytove · 14/04/2017 23:05

Bananas, fruit flakes, yogurt covered raisins, breadsticks
Love malt loaf too

KittyKat88 · 14/04/2017 23:20

I usually take rice cakes or oatcake biscuits, and bananas - mainly because I want something reasonably healthy for my DDs to snack on. Any mess I can easily hoover up!

lhlee62 · 14/04/2017 23:50

If we are going on a road trip I pack fruit (fresh and dry) and drinks in bottles that are less likely to spill. I also might take some savoury biscuits, but I try not to take anything too messy as my husband goes nuts if we mess up his car!

clareycat · 15/04/2017 00:15

We love Raisins, wasbi peas and Pom bears

Sid98 · 15/04/2017 02:11

Crisps and fruit

NerrSnerr · 15/04/2017 04:12

We always have water and try to stop to have a picnic for long journeys as I am worried about choking when in the car. We tend to take sausage rolls, small cakes and fruit for long journeys
