It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

we take crisps drinks and small pringles packs in the car for long journeys but my children are older. I do like the soreen loaf so small packs would be an ideal snack to take with us in the car. i like to have snacks in case we get stuck on the motorway as it saves them arguing with each other. something else to focus on for a bit

CheeseEMouse · 13/04/2017 20:39

Bottles of water available (though these often need to be prized off the little one who likes cuddling ut) and the odd rice cake to pass back if we are stuck and late for lunch

Sillysausage123 · 13/04/2017 20:41

As much as I'd like to have fruit fir snacks it's too sticky and goes off quick on long journeys so snacks tend to be crisps or sweets and a bottle to share

clopper · 13/04/2017 21:43

Having been stuck several times for hours in traffic jams, we always take snacks and drinks. The DC like frozen squash in a bottle which melts throughout the journey. Bananas, popcorn, cereal bars and crisps are the main snacks we take.

BeMorePanda · 13/04/2017 22:02

Apples
Water
"Emergency biscuits" (nairns ginger oat biscuits).

Sometimes a bag of crisps.

That is for long journeys.

We've been doing lots of 1.5-2.5 hour long car journeys recently without any snacks at all

knittedbynanas · 13/04/2017 22:09

I usually pack
Crisps
Fruit
Biscuits or cookies
Water bottles
One of those squeeze juice concentrated things

We live a long way from things so quite often eat in the car.

Hopezibah · 13/04/2017 22:46

rather shamefully packs of biscuits, popcorn and crisps! I would of course prefer healthier things but they seem the most handy. I've never thought of soreen for car journeys but definitely will do now!

PickAChew · 13/04/2017 22:48

We don't snack in the car. Too many bloody crumbs.

We do break up a long journey with lunch, though. Usually M&S sarnies.

EasterRobin · 13/04/2017 22:48

I always have bottles of water in the car and a box of children's cereal bars just so they are always handy if needed. For long trips I pack a selection of pouches and some toddler crisps.

I really like Soreen. I'd probably have it as a picnic snack when we got out of the car rather than while driving along.

Theimpossiblegirl · 13/04/2017 23:09

My DDs want food as soon as we start a journey, even if they've eaten. I pack a combination of easy, not messy food, for example: fruit, crisps, cheese portions, cereal bars, Cake bars (including Soreen), frubes etc.

And for me, coffee, lots of coffee.

thismeansnothing · 13/04/2017 23:10

I don't like dd eating in the car. I prefer her to be sat at the table or at least sat still when eating and I'd hate for her to choke on food if I had to brake hard or there was a bump in the road. Plus most car journeys are only an hour tops so you don't need snacks. If we are on a drive that's going to be 3-4 hours then we just pack a picnic for what would have been our lunch etc (sandwich fruit n some yoghurt n a drink) and plan a proper stop n leg stretch

kayleighp85 · 14/04/2017 00:10

We've just found Soreen lunchbox loaves ourselves and they are the perfect size for little hands and make hardly any mess, also cut up fruit and raisins keep my 5 busy and whiny free while travelling, I must admit my BIGGEST mistake was chocolate muffins for 5 kids !! the crumbs and choccy finger marks on the windows was horrendous CakeHmm lesson well and truly learnt !!

jobrum · 14/04/2017 00:33

I've learned to take more than one water bottle for when one inevitably gets dropped out of reach. On longer journeys I do pack a few snacks and sent to go with something very contained and with few crumbs. Dd is only two so we plan around mealtimes and any car snacks would be just for when she's peckish or a much needed distraction. A sandwich would need to be on very soft bread with a soft filling, those ready made strips of dried fruit are great. Also avoid anything drippy or melty!

danigrace · 14/04/2017 00:44

We stick to little bags of cut up fruit and veggies so as not to make tonnes of mess. It's good to know the little soreen loaves don't make crumbs, will have to try.

lizziefield1982 · 14/04/2017 05:47

Standard emergency snacks in our car come from a big bag of sultanas, as they take ages to pick up and eat so entertain for a while too, crackers/breadsticks as not too messy and a bottle of water!

MackerelOfFact · 14/04/2017 06:35

There are usually some pouches of dried mango and/or Nakd bars stashed somewhere in the car.

And currently fruit Polos as I saw them at the petrol station and purchased them in a fit of nostalgia - haven't had them for about 20 years, had no idea they still existed! Grin

Are the toffee flavour Soreen bars no longer available? Shock

nutmegella · 14/04/2017 07:18

Individual cheese portions and crackers are great with some fresh fruit or a healthy flapjack - nothing that can melt!

mailfuckoff · 14/04/2017 07:47

My dc, dh and myself love polos so I always have some in my car ready for the traffic jam or occasional fighting. The mint flavour also helps when they are feeling ill and I don't have to worry about choking. Polos are less and faff free and yummy :-)

MiniAlphaBravo · 14/04/2017 08:21

Going to Cornwall soon from Suffolk so definitely will have to bring snacks. Grapes, satsumas, rice cakes, carrot sticks. Really trying to stick with healthy snacks at the moment.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 14/04/2017 10:07

I used to eat malt loaf in the car on my way to work as it stopped my morning sickness when I was expecting dd. It was one of the few things that I could stomach.
I always have snacks in my bag as I tend to get HANGRY. Usually fruit, raisins, nuts.

BellaVida · 14/04/2017 10:45

We always take plenty of water, then a couple of snacks each on a long journey. Bananas are great as I can throw them into a bag without preparation. Generally we then take cereal bars, breadsticks or brioche, as they cause the least mess!

Northgate · 14/04/2017 11:02

We have water bottles, and for snacks I usually have little snack packs of crackers / oatcakes / mini cheddars and raisins.

We had one or two bad experiences with fresh fruit causing a sticky mess, crisps being accidentally upended, and chocolate being smeared everywhere, which is why it's mostly just crackers and raisins now.

We've never tried any Soreen bars though.

MrsOllyMurs · 14/04/2017 11:07

Snacks in the car are a big no for us - we like to keep the car clean and tidy! That said, we stop frequently and take water and fruit and biscuits to eat whilst we stretch our legs.

voyager50 · 14/04/2017 11:10

Individually wrapped chocolate chip brioches always go down well - they don't really leave crumbs and there's not enough chocolate to drop and melt and make a mess in the car and they taste ok!

sharond101 · 14/04/2017 11:35

I will shamefully admit a lollipop is often offered. Quiet time for me for at least 20 minutes and no crumbs!
