It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

Babybel
Satsuma
Banana
Rice cakes
Ham pieces

In little grab pots if they're old enough

We tend to stop on long journeys rather than snack in the car as I worry about the choking risk.
If I do take something it would be small, along the lines of raisins or dry cheerios.

suzyq50 · 15/04/2017 09:35

I go for convenience so it's packets of crisps or small bags sweets for treats. Bananas & bottles of water & maybe some small cheese portions. If it's a long trip we'll stop at a service station, make it part of the journey, kids like it.

eternalopt · 15/04/2017 09:40

Snacks that won't grow into something if dropped between the seats! Dry cereal, oaty bars, dried fruit are all good. Kids are quite partial to the soreen mini loaves too but they have to beat me to it!

For long journeys I pack a flask of tea and coffee and bottles of water. We usually travel over lunch time and so I pack a picnic which we have at a service station at one of their picnic tables. Picnic includes sandwiches, veg and fruit. Sometimes we have a couple of lollipops in the car for Dd to suck on as she gets ear ache on long car journeys but that's it.

millifiori · 15/04/2017 10:12

We always used to pack snacks for long journeys. DH hates stopping at service stations and he is such a careful driver so it takes us hours and hours to get anywhere.
When DC were young we'd pack loads of carrot sticks, sliced apples, bananas, rice cakes, bread sticks and tiny sandwiches w=made with wholemeal bread and cream cheese or peanut butter.
The Soreen mini loaves are a good idea in theory - DH would love them - he always has a loaf of Soreen on the go to eat late at night. But the children and I can't stand it, too heavy and squidgy and they don't like dried fruit. Not much help. Sorry.

I take a variety of snacks with me just incase I get stuck in lots of traffic and we quite often travel to europe. I always have fruit bags, honey loops for breakfast. Crisps, and fruit shoots. I tend to stock up because whatever we don't use I use at the destination.

del2929 · 15/04/2017 10:59

i go for convinience in the car- just because it is stressful enough travelling with the little darlings lol

boo2410 · 15/04/2017 11:05

My son is older so no fear of choking, I make a packed lunch. He has soft cheese and cucumber wraps, Doritos, cereal bars, bananas and a couple of bars of chocolate. That is for a very long journey mind. If it's a shorter journey he has as above but not as much. Unfortunately he doesn't like Soreen. I however do, but would not take it on a car journey as I like mine sliced and spread with a thick layer of butter which leaves teeth marks so is best eaten at home!!

AngelwingsPetlamb · 15/04/2017 11:14

I learnt from the start that as far as my DC was concerned it would be the biggest mistake to ever take him out without enough food and drinks. He would be perfectly happy all the time he had access to snacks and drinks. Fortunately for me he preferred water over juice and savoury over sweet. So I had a small lunch bag that I would fill with small sandwiches, some savoury crisp snack, fruit and a small cake or biscuit plus a refillable drinks bottle. This kept him happy on many a long journey in the car, his pushchair or his bicycle.

teddygirlonce · 15/04/2017 11:26

Much in line with what DM used to give us - apple and plain biscuits - help guard against travel sickness too. And only water to drink.

caffeineanddryshampoo · 15/04/2017 11:42

For snack stops we like humzingers, soreen mini loaves (Iparticularly like the banana ones), fruit, oatcakes and Organix animal biscuits.

MycatsaPirate · 15/04/2017 11:42

Normally it would be drinks, maybe a sandwich and some boiled sweets.

But after breaking down on the M3 last week at 8pm (before we'd had dinner) and being stuck waiting for recovery for 6 hours and getting home at 4.15am I would now consider taking a full bbq with maybe a chicken, some potatoes and veg with us!!

CordeliaScott · 15/04/2017 12:14

I try to discourage DCs from eating in the car due to the mess. I generally carry a bag of Squashies though for if I'm trying to bribe them into good behaviour

Belmo · 15/04/2017 12:16

Mine (5yo) loves the mini soreens, she thinks it's cake Grin
Also raisins, apples - a favourite as takes ages - and sometimes chopped fruit/veg or crisps (hate as messy)
The baby loves all of the above plus babybels and rice cakes, but I won't let him eat in the car as it's a bit of a choking hazard.

BillyButtfuck · 15/04/2017 12:26

Redbull and tanfastics Wink

We don't feed DTs snacks in the car as a general rule, they are only 1 and the choking risk just isn't worth it. I will however keep a few snacking bags of baby biscuits/rice cakes in the glove box in case of zombie apocalypse a bad traffic jam.----

iut044 · 15/04/2017 12:30

Water and fruit for long journeys help get us out alot .

UpOnDown · 15/04/2017 14:13

cheese is good.

privatelifeofthegerund · 15/04/2017 15:44

I wish to goodness I could give our son snacks in the car, as long journeys are a part of our life. However, him choking is a huge fear for my husband. Makes things difficult sometimes, as son does get carsick, and I'd love to pass him something carb-y to settle his stomach!

FiveMoreMinutesPlease · 15/04/2017 17:21

We only have snacks when we go on a long journey and usually it is a packet of starburst or fruit pastilles to share between the 2 of them every few junctions on the motorway.

NotCitrus · 15/04/2017 18:20

Water and then a stash of food for traffic jams and eating when we stop. Oatcakes are good as all our children will eat them without the one prone to sickness feeling left out.

Screen mini loaves are quite handy for children's lunches but generally a larger one is only enough for one adult snack - which isn't very healthy as it's so loaded with sugar.

spottypjs · 15/04/2017 18:48

Just keep it easy and take some fruit and some crackers

cocochips · 15/04/2017 19:16

Crisps, trail mix and fruit

Nigglenaggle · 15/04/2017 19:25

Given the recent publicity about children choking this thread surprises me. No we don't do this at all.

sweir1 · 15/04/2017 19:48

We tend to pack the usual picnicky type things just to save money at services
