It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I'd rather we stopped off mid journey to eat properly and rest, ready for the next part of the adventure.

We always take little fome made onion and bacon flans - don;t know why it's a sort of family tradition, but tastier and less messy than sandwiches.

Emmamaryd · 25/04/2017 08:48

we take some fruit (eg apples/satsumas/grapes) but some snack packs as well such as mini soreens and individual biscuit packs.

bex552 · 25/04/2017 10:31

My daughter is allergic to eggs so it takes a bit more planning for us when we need to take snacks! Luckily my daughter loves Soreen and it has no egg! It is our go to cake like snack :)

We always have black grapes cut in half these are refreshing and juicy so stop the kids feeling sick. We also have frozen drives. Less mess and nice and fresh and healthy.

Dessallara · 25/04/2017 12:15

A pot of berries! :)

piggypoo · 25/04/2017 12:44

I chop up squares of cheese, I also prepare little cherry tomatoes, small bottles of water, chopped fruit, and last but by no means least, I buy Soreen Sliced, and butter that, and we have that too. All packed in small plastic containers, we stop somewhere and have a picnic! We've got loads of happy memories of these little snack stops! :)

Our son gets incredibly travel sick so we try to avoid eating on and right before car journeys...that said ive heard that ginger biccies are good for sickness so perhaps we will try those next time we are travelling some distance.

melski1989 · 25/04/2017 13:24

Popcorn always goes down well with ours (and they're enjoying trying all the new flavours that seem to be popping up everywhere), but just be aware you'll need to hoover your back seats afterwards!

tishist · 25/04/2017 14:17

We take cut up fruit and dried fruit and nuts as snacks.

MillyVanilli222 · 25/04/2017 14:45

We always have fruit packs on hand, as well as the odd packet of crisps!

user1485629191 · 25/04/2017 15:28

Mini cheddars, chopped banana and grapes and dairylea dunkers if outs a long journey.

itsalisoncr · 25/04/2017 16:15

On long car journeys, take a selection! Hard boiled sweets are great for car sickness (and make a fun game to see who can suck it for the longest!) also little snacks like fruit bags and smoothies and basically anything which isn't too messy! Pre prepare sandwiches and pasta in Tupperware for everyone to enjoy and for treats choose crisps, little sweet bags and mini individually wrapped cake bars!

Jocelynne123 · 25/04/2017 16:30

We always have to plan ahead as we need gluten free snacks. We only have them on long journeys so I will make a treat picnic. We take sandwiches, usually a banana or grapes and then cherry bake wells or crisps. We don't snack in the car on normal journey though. Xx

LookAtAllTheBullshit · 25/04/2017 17:14

I don't allow food in my car.
We're not a starving nation and my kids can go without food for a few hours without dying.
My kids can eat in a car when they buy their own.

AutumnElla · 25/04/2017 17:26

I don't usually let my kids in the car, it makes a mess, bits get into the car seats and squished into their clothes and it's a choking hazard. I usually take snacks out though, which is normally crisps or fruit.

Blondie1982 · 25/04/2017 17:57

Bit of both; freshly prepared things and handy packs of things for convenience

Bunkai · 25/04/2017 18:12

Water bottles in an insulated bag in the boot along with crisps (ds2) and popcorn (me and ds1). On the day I take crepes for DS1 and a sandwich for ds2. Sorted.

emmamed123 · 25/04/2017 19:06

little boxes of raisins, crisps, yogurt covered fruit flakes and plenty of drinks.

hermagesty · 25/04/2017 19:12

I know I'm going to be judged... sweets! Hahaha. If it's a particularly long journey I pack them a good smack box full of chopped fruit, sandwiches, brioche etc

JordannaaLeighh · 25/04/2017 20:29

My go-to car journey snacks for me and my 18 month old consists of fruit- as it is non messy (well, as much as anything else) and healthy. Usually I chop up some apples/pears or bananas and orange. Or if I'm feeling genorous I will bring out the biscuits.

Sammyislost · 26/04/2017 10:43

Always got to be something non sticky and as little mess as possible! Cheerios work well, as they can be hoovered up if they're dropped.
We haven't tried Soreen yet, but I think i'd end up eating them all! YUM.

burwellmum · 26/04/2017 12:46

Water (essential) and biscuits or crisps.

tigercub50 · 26/04/2017 18:48

Depends on the length of the journey if it's long, I take a picnic but otherwise it's usually just cereal bars & drinks. My 8 year old is slightly overweight so I'm trying to cut down on snacking, especially crisps & sweet stuff. We both love Soreen tho!

CheeseAtFourpence · 26/04/2017 19:37

Long car journeys usually involve our dog so back seat snacks aren't a great idea - although the dog would disagree!! We tend to stick to water and stop off somewhere for a snack or meal. Occasionally she might have a banana if we're dashing off somewhere after swimming - the less mess the better!
