It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

Water bottles and sweets lazy mum

Busymee · 14/04/2017 12:08

Fizzy pop and sweets for us usually Percy pigs were usually going on holiday if it's a long journey so special treats SmileSmile our children are older so not so worried about choking. Used to give them innocent smoothies and raisins when they were younger. Don't know if they have tried soreen tbh!

We only packed snacks for long car journeys (when we were driving from Southend to Scotland, for example), and my main criteria was lack of mess - so I tended to go for sweets - fruit flavour boiled sweets, toffees etc. They had water to drink - so if there were spillages, it just meant wet clothes and seat, not stickiness to deal with.

littledinaco · 14/04/2017 12:36

I would be worried about them choking eating in the car. Also, don't like the mess and crumbs. For a long journey, would be stopping at services so eat then.

We take bottles of water (more than we think we'll need!) and fruit, cooked pizza, sandwiches, biscuits...basically a whole blooming picnic! Good job we're not car proud!!! To be honest though, it's one of the few things that stops DD getting car sick, and also the prices at service stations are extortionate, no way can be afford them.

The best snacks for a car journeys are the kind that will keep you feeling full longer so you'll be less likely to reach for a bag of crisps an hour down the road. Snacks like nuts, seeds, popcorn and rice cakes or fruits like halved grapes and dried fruits, such as raisins.

If we are travelling over lunch or tea time and wont be stopping, I tend to pack simple sandwiches and dips with carrot/bread sticks. And for dessert - a slice of fruit cake or a formage fraise (rather than a runny yogurt)

Bottled drinks such as fruit juice, sugar-free dilute juice or flavoured water are best as fizzy pop is likely to go everywhere and may cause hyperactivity!

We always carry a supply of wipes, along with a plastic bag for the rubbish and we also have cool bags to keep any refrigerated foods/drinks cool for as long as possible.

Fruit for Mum and Dad and a selection of snacks grabbed from the cupboard for my daughter plus a full bottle of drink

footdust · 14/04/2017 12:52

My children are prone to travel sicknesss so no snacks but still water always available

andywedge · 14/04/2017 12:54

Little packetsof dried fruit and cereal bars are perfect - not (too) messy and healthy and easy

BeeMyBaby · 14/04/2017 12:58

Biscuits and crisps probably, dh usually likes oranges and shares them with the children for short journeys (only an hour or so). Overall we try not to have much food in the car as it makes such a mess and definitely not a cake as the crumbs go squidgy. Although my son loves the soreen loaves when I drag him out shopping with me.

barbsbarbs · 14/04/2017 13:03

I normally have lots of bread sticks with dips and finger sandwiches. Im not bothered about the mess as it can be cleared up quickly.

maryandbuzz1 · 14/04/2017 13:12

My son always used to be carsick when he was very young ...however he seems to have recovered from this and now we take a variety of snacks which range from pieces of fruit, boxes of raisins, squirty cheese rolled up in ham and pieces of cheese.

jt75 · 14/04/2017 13:22

I make individual yogurt pots. I use small plastic containers with a lid and fill them from a large pot of plain yogurt, add some fruit eg grapes or blueberries, then add a sprinkle of no sugar muesli.

becky004 · 14/04/2017 13:24

Bananas, satsumas and bottles of water, something quick and easy that doesn't cause too much mess in the car!

jacqui5366 · 14/04/2017 13:29

I take their school lunch box and fill with snacks liked tubes of fromage frais, cheese pieces, little boxes of raisins, a soreen snack lunchbox loaf is always in there too. It keeps them busy, they always compare what they have and compare that they have exactly the same, and even negotiate swapping cheese for raisins. It makes the journey faster, takes their mind off travelling and eating little and often helps settle little tummies.

gd2011 · 14/04/2017 13:29

Dried fruit and water.

glenka · 14/04/2017 13:34

We will always stop off somewhere to have something to eat rather than have a snack in the car.

mooota1514 · 14/04/2017 13:34

We always have a small snack bag ready to take in the car, even for medium length journeys: Alpen Light bars, bottles of still water, clementines, apples, Nature Valley bars, Soreen (yes, really) and Fibre One brownies. That sort of thing.

Simey68 · 14/04/2017 13:37

Have to say my children love these new graze packets and some minature orange juices keeps them happy on long journeys

glennamy · 14/04/2017 13:38

We always have bottled water and for longer journey's we have nuts, dried fruit and the odd cookie or three :)

hdh747 · 14/04/2017 13:46

We like to take fruit, veg sticks, raisins, breadsticks, trail bars.

jandoc · 14/04/2017 13:59

I always take fruit but include some nice things like wine gums

finleypop · 14/04/2017 14:06

It very often is Soreen malt loaf, we all love it & it is easy to prepare & eat on the go

devito92 · 14/04/2017 14:11

I usually take some wrapped biscuits, less mess

janeyf1 · 14/04/2017 14:27

Just mess-free and crumb-free snacks in the car such as bananas and boiled sweets
