It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

we have a collage with freezer blocks that we fill with sandwiches and snacks, we keep it in the boot and make a few stops to have a "picnic'. the food stays fresh and cool and fills you up more than just grazing in the car.

Rosehips · 14/04/2017 15:14

For long journeys we go at meal times and I pack a multi_compartment lunchbox each.

createbeauty · 14/04/2017 15:15

We've only been on one car journey long enough to take snacks and I baked some cheese scones, fruit scones, and quiche and ate those when we stopped at a service station. We even had some left over to snack on whilst on holiday. :)

samcornfield · 14/04/2017 15:18

I go for anything that is not going to leave crumbs all over my car. It is difficult to find anything that they cannot generate mess with though.

TeenAndTween · 14/04/2017 15:20

Soreen is DD2's main break time snack for school.
I'll pack Soreen or fruit cake for long journeys like the ferry to Jersey.
Otherwise we tend to go with Maryland chocolate chip cookies or whatever was in the 'snack cupboard' when I packed.

Falconhoof1 · 14/04/2017 15:29

Bottles of juice, packets of biscuits and bananas for long car journeys.

MakeTeaNotWar · 14/04/2017 15:30

I don't like the DC to eat in the car as I worry about mess and choking but I do keep water and haribos at the ready in case we are unexpectedly stuck somewhere

seeingdouble2 · 14/04/2017 15:37

Toffee - not only does it take forever to chew , they also cant talk without losing their gravy!

juju3 · 14/04/2017 15:38

Try to avoid anything sticky or messy especially chocolate

rachelmi · 14/04/2017 15:44

bottled water and marmite on toast.

IonaAilidh11 · 14/04/2017 16:00

we pack some sandwiches and tea or water, something light as we have a few car sickness sufferers

hmariez · 14/04/2017 16:26

We don't tend to have car snacks due to travel sickness. But out about my children love blueberries

lizd31 · 14/04/2017 16:34

My great niece loves healthy snacks so we take her favourite baby plum tomatoes, bananas & raisins

ThemisA · 14/04/2017 16:34

Ginger bread men. ginger cake and ginger snaps as they are good for motion sickness and sandwiches in little rolls or squares. We use lap trays which gives a steady base and catches the crumbs

bluejem12 · 14/04/2017 16:35

We always have water in the car, maybe have some fresh popped popcorn but normally just wait and use the service stations.

Cailin7 · 14/04/2017 16:52

Other than water do not eat in the car. We also have a dog and on long journeys we always stop lots for breaks, walks and maybe picnic or lunch in a cafe.

littleme96 · 14/04/2017 17:01

Convenience all the way here, so non-messy individually wrapped things that I can chuck in my bag. We like the individual banana loaves from Soreen because they aren't as messy as the malt versions! Also like those Whitworths' shots with dried fruit and nuts in them. Mints also go down well.

We normally take our own water, because I find that generally it is expensive to buy when out and about.

happysouls · 14/04/2017 17:01

I keep the tubs from humus and coleslaw etc and they're really handy to reuse for picnics and car journeys particularly if you're going away somewhere as you can just stick them in recycling at the other end and don't have loads of extra stuff to carry around! I can make up little salad pots and fruit pots to go with sandwiches and snacks. I'll put lots of effort into picnics, but we're not really big on snacking. For car journeys ginger biscuits are the pretty useful as they help with nausea and just a nice little top up between meals without over eating!

AR2012 · 14/04/2017 17:38

No food in the car too much mess and risk of chocking and vomiting.

southernsun · 14/04/2017 17:48

Normally a banana or biscuit, something that is not to messy and soft.

Ganne1 · 14/04/2017 18:14

We usually made the children wait until we could make a suitable stop and have something "proper," such as sandwiches,. Otherwise crisps.

Gazelda · 14/04/2017 18:29

Generally just drinks. But if it's a loooong journey, then I might do some sarnies, cheese sticks or fruit or (whispers) sweets.
Hadn't really thought about soreen if I'm honest - I associate it with the cake department which doesn't feature as a car snack in my head. But it may do in future.

maisybobbins · 14/04/2017 19:14

I make each of them a picnic bag with sandwiches, fruit, cheddars or crisps and any treats I happen to have in such as bag of mini chocolate fingers or chocolate animal biscuits. Agree mini malt loaf would make fab snack too, must get some in.

alabaster002 · 14/04/2017 20:01

Choking risk in a car? As opposed to a choking risk when not in a car?
Some fruit and water

sarah861421 · 14/04/2017 20:05

convenience every time. plus plenty of water. Dont forget the rubbish bags, and the hand wash .
