Having a pet is like having an extra member of the family; they can be a huge source of joy and comfort, but they’re also a lot of responsibility. Pet Insurance company, Bought By Many, want to hear about some of the smaller mishaps your pets may have had; those moments that remind you just how much they need you to take care of them.

Here’s what Bought By Many have to say: “We know pets can be mischievous and get themselves into sticky situations, so we’ve launched pet insurance with features no other provider offers. You can choose between policies that will never go up in price, give you money back if you don’t need to claim or cover your pet’s pre-existing medical conditions. Bought By Many is free to join, and 290,000+ people already have!!”

So, to get your hands on a £300 voucher, tell Bought By Many about the mishaps your pets have had - the funnier the better! If your labrador has ever broken into the dog treats cupboard, or your bird has fallen off its perch, or your cat misjudged a leap from one sofa to the next, post on the thread with your stories and you’ll be entered into a prize draw for a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Years ago our cat had to have a cone on after a trip to the vet. She was very tiny, still a kitten really, and had so much fluffy fur that you could barely see the cat for all the fur. The cone was huge on her. One summer day the door had been left open and as she had not been out for a few days she got so excited by the prospect of outdoors that she hurtled toward it. Unfortunately she had decided to follow her usual path without taking into account her new dimensions, and bolted through a tiny piece of furniture, stopping dead in her tracks mid air as her cone got stuck in one side and her back legs still struggling to get over the other. She was just a ball of fur dangling inside a tiny wooden table. She wasn't stuck long but it was just so funny! She always had leaves and twigs stuck to her bum in all that fur. She was such a character. I miss her!

Eric is a climber and a daredevil and happily scoots over stiles whilst on adventures out in the Peak District. Unfortunately he is also cocky and over confident and on one such occasion he misjudged how far the drop was on the other side of the stile and landed awkwardly meaning dh and I ended up carrying him four miles back to the car (thankfully he is only small) and spending over £100 at the vets getting him checked over and painkillers for what turned out to be bruising luckily.
I'd like to report he learned his lesson byt he is just as eager to scoot over stiles as ever unfortunately.

We had just sat down to a cup of tea and some biscuits when we got a call and had to leave. When we came back we couldn't find the biscuits, we looked around and had no luck. Later we noticed something under the sofa, and it was the box from the biscuits...further searching found the cellophane under a seat and the dog started looking very guilty! He had somehow got the biscuits from the open box, closed cellophane, eaten them all and then hidden the evidence!!

We called the vet and he laughed and told us that because of the type of biscuit our dog would be fine, just might need to go outside a bit more often for next few days

I had a dopey beagle who had no recall, so I rarely let him off the lead. one spring day my dad and I had taken my gran out in her wheelchair to the local park. it was really quiet and dad kept urging me to let Murphy off for a run. I finally relented and he had a ball- wading through muddy puddles and getting deliciously dirty. All fine till we turned a corner and saw... a wedding party posing for photos! Murphy was delighted to see all these lovely people in pristine clothes and rushed to meet them! Mayhem ensued. The white-clad bride in the (I noted with a sinking heart) very expensive looking dress was screaming, as were the bridesmaids (in pale pink silk) and the 2 little flower girls (in cute white dresses) were crying. Murphy did a few laps of glee around them all, with me and dad in hot pursuit. Thankfully, we managed to catch him before he caused any damage. Phew. Until we turned and noticed poor gran rolling slowly down the hill in her wheelchair!!

Our labradors, regardless of how far down into the compost heaps you bury food, dig it up and find it. These compost heaps are 6 foot high, built with railway sleepers. A couple of weeks ago we dug the compost beneath ash from the fire, grass clippings and various other bits. Next morning, dog appears- nose covered in ash. She is a cheeky one!!

One of my Persians sat at the top of the stairs with her mouth open. Realised something was wrong straight away so took her straight to the vet. Turns out she'd fractured her jaw. How on earth a fairly lazy indoor cat managed that, I have no idea. Fortunately she's made a quick recovery. After almost loosing her sister a moth ago, my nerves will take a bit longer to recover!!

A friend came to mine one day to do some plastering. I had to go out so left him working and Bumbledog asleep on the sofa! I returned two hours later to find my friend in a really bad mood. Bumbledog had walked through the tray on the floor that the plaster was in and then ran all over the house. My friend had to clean plaster off from everywhere!!!

Our first moggy, boy (no longer with us) was mooching round our living room sniffing the brand new cream carpet. Dh was showing carpet fitter out and came back to find a fresh cat turd in the middle of the beautiful cream wool carpet. I hasten to add that when Dh said what's this he ran as if the hounds of he'll were on his tail!

Our hamster escaped from her cage and managed to get in to a space behind our toilet. She then fell through the space between the walls from upstairs all the way downstairs. We could hear her scurrying around under the floor so we had to pop off the skirting boards to free her. She was certainly happy to see us and we were so pleased we found her safe and sound.

My dog eats things when she's stressed.

One notable time she had to be unzipped to remove a 10cmlong piece of sock that had completely blocked her intestines and started fermenting. She was very lucky to survive and I was very glad my pet insurance covered the £3k+ vet bill!

She ate her entire lead, leaving nothing but the metal clasp. As she 'passed' it I had to keep all the chunks and piece it together like the world's grimmest jigsaw to make sure it had all come through.

She got so panicky when we had a new roof fitted that she ate half a box of tampons and a My Little Pony.

But then she also once shat a fiver so it all balances out.

When my DC were little, we had two very amenable cats who actually seemed to enjoy being pestered to death by rugrats. Despite this, one of them was very much the cock of the walk and the other cats on the street gave him a wide berth and a lot of respect. It didn't do much for his street cred when he charged through the catflap one day to confront another moggy who'd ventured too close to our back door. He was still wearing the frilly doll's bonnet and bib that the kids had dressed him in, and trailing behind him a lacy shawl that was tucked into his collar.

We brought our Weimaraner back to England from overseas. He had never experienced a cold winter. For his first winter we gave him a coat and scarf and he was very intrigued by the snow. We let him off his lead on a country path and he tried to run, promptly slipping on some ice, fell in an ungainly fashion and grazed his nose in the process (think Bambi on the ice but with less grace!). 4 years on and he still refuses to go further than absolutely necessary in the snow :-)

My Jack Russell, when he was a pup, was incredibly nosey and into everything. I'd emptied a box of puppy food pouches and put the empty box down for a minute. The next thing - he was haring around the kitchen, bumping into everything, with said cardboard box stuck firmly on his head! awww!!!! No harm done and he's still as nosey now!!...but knows better!

My two boys are nuts, they run around the house like they're competing in a relay race- i swear they tag each other so off one goes bounding around, tags the other one and then off he goes!

Theodore (Teddy) thinks he's a dog, he tries to bark at flys, he absolutely can not jump and he follows you around everywhere! Then persistently lets you know when someone has left the room like a car alarm!

Thackery is a soft crazy face, he gets so rolly when you stroke him that he forgets where he is and tends to roll off whatever he was sitting on! He has a habit of moving your hand to the parts of his body that he wants the fuss!

My favourite mishap however was by our dearly departed Jinx (Thackery's biological brother), we hadn't had the boys very long and they were still finding their feet in the house. Jinx was a meower (much like Theodore) and he did it so often in the end we just ignored him. Anyway, one day he had been meowing relentlessly for about an hour and it wasn't until Thackery came in and meowed at me that i thought i should go and check on him. As i walked into the kitchen all i saw was half of Jinx's body hanging out of our plastic bag holder- it was one of those ikea ones with loads of holes in and in those holes were all four of Jinx's paws!! He was completely stuck!!! I looked him in the eye and he stared right back at me and just half asked meowed like 'mrrowww'- basically it was 'help!'. I have never seen anything so funny in my life!

My old cat, Iggy, was a very nervous rescue cat and when we first got him was too scared to use the litter tray so used to wee under furniture. We had an old fashioned HiFi with lots of wires, he obviously went for a wee on the plug socket/ stereo wires and the first we knew was a blue flash and Iggy shooting 6 feet up in the air then furiously washing his willy! He was fine, but did use the litter tray after that!

There was an almighty crash downstairs in the middle of the night. We were living somewhere a bit dodgy at the time, so needed to investigate. DH grabs the nearest thing to a weapon to hand, and we creep downstairs and I grab the phone in the hall. Phone is dead, no dial tone, and then I notice that the wire has been cut. Clearly there must be a maniac in the house. So we open the door to the living room to confront aforementioned maniac, switch on the lights to find our hamster in the middle of the living room floor. Turns out he'd sprung out of his cage, nibbled through the phone wire before knocking something over and waking us up. Bad nights sleep!

My favourite story is about an old (sadly deceased, she used her 9 lives up very quickly) cat of ours. One weekend, MrDawes decided to make a fry up and save the oil for later to make chips with. Well that wasn't to be..

We came downstairs to find the cat on the side, licking her lips after eating a whole pan of oil. I picked her up and found oil seeping down her back legs, her bottom swelled up some much it looked like a baboon's backside and her legs looked like those of a seabird involved in an oil spill.

I took her to the normally very serious and professional vet, who laughed a lot, and prescribed a collar (she wouldn't stop licking herself, therefore re-ingesting the oil over and over) and a probiotic to settle her tummy. £50 that cost us!

I have a lot more stories about that cat, she was ace but bonkers!!

cazzzie987 · 01/04/2017 13:03

My cat loves to lick feet and loves eating anything at all, so we have to be careful what we leave around.

When I was growing up we had a dalmation called Critter, he was a big stupid softie. He came running from the greenhouse to greet me, but didn't see that the door was closed and ran straight through it breaking the glass! He wasn't bothered, just stood there happily licking the blood off his nose! Poor thing!

jacqui5366 · 01/04/2017 13:32

my little Maltese is normally OCD when it comes to going out in the rain, he walks around puddles, and avoids mud. Because his hair is long, I bath him every 6 weeks and he goes to the groomers every 8 weeks, however this his him after his bath, running with his doggy pals on the local park, decided to 'face plant' the floor. Oh well back in the bath again - by his face I think he thinks this was rather funny too.

When our dog was a puppy he used to like playing with his water bowl and sloshing the water all over the kitchen floor. We went out to the supermarket one day and when we came back he'd gotten into the larder cupboard and ripped open packets of lentils, rice, gravy granules, custard, cereal, you name it! All of this mixed with him playing with the water bowl turned to a gravy and custard paste and stuck all the rice and all foods to his coat! We had to bath him, cut off lumps of his fur and clean the kitchen from top to bottom! The larder cupboard is now up high and the plates and pans are kept in the lower cupboards!

My dog keeps getting stuck inside my duvet. There are a few buttons missing off some of the duvet covers because he has chewed them off (!) and he manages to wiggle through the gaps so he is between the duvet and the cover and then once he is in, he gets lost and can't find his way out!!

gd2011 · 01/04/2017 14:07

The dog I was looking after for friends while they were on holiday chewed up my woolly hat and a sandal. That's the thanks you get!

glennamy · 01/04/2017 14:15

When younger we use to go to our static caravan for weekends away, at that time we had a very strong dog who was normally very well behaved, however one day our Mum decided to hold the lead as we were walking around the lakes on our site, our dog suddenly decided to chase a couple of nearby ducks, dragging our Mum after him, down the muddy bank and into the lake, she was soaked from head to toe, yet It was so funny as Mum hates swimming... She was furious at first but she ended up laughing as we were all doing so... :)

Our old cat misjudged a jump from a sofa and landed on my dad's model airplane that he had spent hours perfecting. It was of course ruined
