Hello, hello, hello… It is I, Count Olaf – guardian of the Baudelaire orphans Violet, Klaus and Sunny, and magnificent and respected theatre performer.

Violet is the eldest; she is followed by Klaus, and then Sunny, who is an infant. I have provided these lucky orphans with a rat-infested room - including a complementary pile of rocks at no cost to them, and shampoo that encourages tears - and I believe, therefore, that I am quite justified in asking them to do a range of minor chores for me in return.

My list includes:

  • Keep the kitchen gleamingly clean
  • Keep the library well dusted
  • Polish the floors in the ballroom
  • Hang my undergarments in the laundry room after they've washed them
  • Weed, mow, and preen the gardens
  • Chop wood in the back yard

Alas, these wealthy brats have been utterly spoilt! They've never done a chore in their lives, and therefore believe that I am BU to ask them to carry out such tasks - which is why, my adoring MNer fans, I wish to ask you: which chores you wish you could ask your DCs to do?

I feel your anguish having to spend more time with your DCs since it’s half term, so what chores do you wish you could ask your DCs to do during half term? Would you like your moody teenager to be able to whip up a Michelin star meal? Or your toddler to not only put away their toys, but also hoover the lounge? Whether it’s something small like wanting your DCs to do the washing up or make their own beds, or something more elaborate like wishing they would Marie Kondo your wardrobe or build you a garden retreat, tell me, Count Olaf - and I will reward one of you with a £300 voucher.

Yours most handsomely,

Count Olaf

I wish I could get them to clear out the garage! It's mostly full of their tatter and mess anyway :P x

grannybiker · 19/02/2017 12:57

oh how I wish they could tidy their bedrooms sensibly so that all relevant bits are kept together rather than shoved in random places. And that they were willing to throw out those with broken or missing parts - and it stayed that way!

In an ideal world...Ironing, cleaning the oven, cleaning windows (loathe this job!).

Realistically I would settle for...picking own clothes off floor & putting them in the laundry basket!!!!!

Yes...it is that bad!

Angelkimmy · 19/02/2017 16:58

Get up during the night with my newborn, i miss my sleep

SuzCG · 19/02/2017 19:02

Ironing - I'm too busy being a full time children's entertainer in half term to get any done!

racybikerchick1 · 19/02/2017 19:31

I would love my daughter to do the washing up all half term, what bliss and relaxation I would have if I didn't need to do my worst chore.

Also it would be nice if she made her bed and opened her window

(I could only wish)

Gazelda · 19/02/2017 21:16

Either
A) remove all tissues from pockets before the item goes in the washing machine or
B) pick all the clods of wet and disintegrating tissue off the clothes that have been through the machine.

Count Olaf..chores I wish for....1)morning coffee with pastries 2)build mum a small book corner (doesn't have to be fancy just private!)3)Prepare meals. However- In the real world...I just wish that they'd pick up their towels after a shower instead of mum picking up sodden towels all through the house!... Yes there are a lot of them!😮

BeMorePanda · 20/02/2017 12:03

9yo cleaned the bathroom yesterday - result.
5yo did some dusting.

I rewarded them with a pile of rocks and a burnt dinner Smile

LesisMiserable · 20/02/2017 14:16

Serve me pina colada's whilst giving me a foot rub and whispering in my ear what an perfect example of a woman and mother I truly am….

….alternatively, tidy your bedroom, move your dishes, pick your pants up and LET YOUR GODFORSAKEN BATH WATER OUT!

ann28 · 20/02/2017 17:06

Sort my washing out from hols - it's a good exercise making sure they colour the like colours in the correct piles!

Sammyislost · 20/02/2017 17:56

Pick up the dog poop in the garden

ha2el · 20/02/2017 18:13

Making of packed lunches for all of the trips we make at half term. And no, I can't afford to eat out.

Doubletroublemummy2 · 20/02/2017 23:49

put things back where they came from, that goes fore dh too!

ParadiseCity · 21/02/2017 11:19

How to tidy up. I tried to be kind and treat DD to a new book the other day, LOOK DD a Japanese book! She loves everything Japanese. However I didn't spark much joy once she realised it was all about tidying up Hmm

Elliepurpleflower · 21/02/2017 15:41

I'd totally get them to hoover the car and clean the oven! If only haha...

BeMorePanda · 21/02/2017 15:58

I cleaned the oven yesterday - gross.
next time I would LOVE to just send a 5yo in there.

vonniebab2 · 21/02/2017 15:58

Clean all the windows would be wonderful

CombineBananaFister · 21/02/2017 19:22

I would like my Son to Tidy up all his Lego properly and regularly - there is nothing more soul destroying than looking out across a sea of tiny bricks and buildings on a carpet that I haven't dared hoover for 5 days for fear of demolishing an entire city or plastic ecosystem Sad
Plus the trip to open the curtains everyday is filled with trepidation and the painful missteps only a 'Lego Parent' knows Grin
Other than that he's pretty good with everything else, but those bricks take aaaaages to clean up!

Lua · 21/02/2017 19:48

Yes, I would be delighted in the real world just to have them pick u their clothes off the floor. But I like to dream I could ask children to study law for me, and build contraptions as needed.

I think you were a bit greedy about trying to marry Violet.... You could still have them working for you.... Grin

ImGoingForATwix · 21/02/2017 22:12

Just the basic stuff really. Tidying toys. Loading dishwasher. Bit of laundry. But mainly the tidying! It's all I do!

seanbean · 22/02/2017 00:48

Just the one Job - please trim the Dogs' claws. I dont't think I, or the Dog, have recovered from last time...

earthmoon · 22/02/2017 03:39

Windows + all the floors in the house.

Cambam2010 · 22/02/2017 09:31

I would be happy if my DS6 just cleared away after himself. He is lazy and just leaves things where they drop. I have noticed though that since I KMed my lounge he has been tidier himself so it obviously it is catching.

Lariflete · 22/02/2017 14:38

I wish they could iron and make tea.
At 5 & 3 they should know that pretend tea doesn't cut it and the amount of clothes they get through definitely makes ironing their responsibility!
