Hello, hello, hello… It is I, Count Olaf – guardian of the Baudelaire orphans Violet, Klaus and Sunny, and magnificent and respected theatre performer.

Violet is the eldest; she is followed by Klaus, and then Sunny, who is an infant. I have provided these lucky orphans with a rat-infested room - including a complementary pile of rocks at no cost to them, and shampoo that encourages tears - and I believe, therefore, that I am quite justified in asking them to do a range of minor chores for me in return.

My list includes:

  • Keep the kitchen gleamingly clean
  • Keep the library well dusted
  • Polish the floors in the ballroom
  • Hang my undergarments in the laundry room after they've washed them
  • Weed, mow, and preen the gardens
  • Chop wood in the back yard

Alas, these wealthy brats have been utterly spoilt! They've never done a chore in their lives, and therefore believe that I am BU to ask them to carry out such tasks - which is why, my adoring MNer fans, I wish to ask you: which chores you wish you could ask your DCs to do?

I feel your anguish having to spend more time with your DCs since it’s half term, so what chores do you wish you could ask your DCs to do during half term? Would you like your moody teenager to be able to whip up a Michelin star meal? Or your toddler to not only put away their toys, but also hoover the lounge? Whether it’s something small like wanting your DCs to do the washing up or make their own beds, or something more elaborate like wishing they would Marie Kondo your wardrobe or build you a garden retreat, tell me, Count Olaf - and I will reward one of you with a £300 voucher.

Yours most handsomely,

Count Olaf

would be great if they would take turn to do the dishes!

sexyandsweet · 16/02/2017 19:55

hoovering the house would be a great start for my children

misscherry · 16/02/2017 19:56

just basically tidying up after themselves will do!

CheeseEMouse · 16/02/2017 22:20

Putting washing away - rather than the endless piles of clean washing we have round the place

Pillowaddict · 16/02/2017 22:38

I'd love if mine could do the washing and put it away - a job I truly hate. Also make coffee - I wouldn't mind being woken at 6 if she brought me a coffee at that time!

smithsurvey14 · 16/02/2017 22:40

I didn't think I was being unreasonable to ask my 17 year old to keep her room tidy and wash her own dishes when she refuses to eat with us, but obviously I was! I would be happy if over the half term she tidied her room to a condition where I can at least get the vacuum cleaner through her doorway. As for my 6 year old I would be satisfied if he just put his own toys away once he has finished with them and puts his dirty clothes into the linen basket and not just drop them on to the floor.

I wish my 3 year old could do the newborn's night feeds! That would e a dream, but seeing as he's three and I'm breastfeeding just picking up his toys when I ask would be a massive change!

EasterRobin · 17/02/2017 02:09

2 year old DD is just learning to put her clean clothes away in the right places. That seems like a pretty good start. She already puts her old clothes in the wash basket. Eagerly reading this thread to see what other things toddlers do to help around the house.

I would love help with all the housework chores leaving me to time to crochet, knit and make candles and of course the main reason would be so I have more time to play with my beautiful granddaughter Lailah Rose who is the most important and loved little girl in the world ❤️❤️🙂🙂❤️❤️

I would just like my ds to clean his room and not leave a tsunami like trail of junk behind him. I would also just like him not to expect mum to be chief cook and bottle washer.

Also I would like him to cook for me for over an hour and then when the little monkey brings it through - I would just look at it and say "Ewwww what's this rubbish - you are trying to poison me " and then just push it away in disgust.

Yes I can dream ........

GruffaloPants · 17/02/2017 18:04

Keeping bedroom tidy would do, frankly.

Entertaining baby all day, plus ironing would be even better.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 17/02/2017 18:23

I'm sending them out to the garden with some sissies to cut the lawn and a pair of tweezers to prune the shrubs. Olaf you are my inspiration.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 17/02/2017 18:23

Scissors damnit!

Maclairey · 17/02/2017 21:32

Wash the car!

iwasyoungonce · 17/02/2017 22:40

I wish my kids would keep the bathroom tidy. Not much to ask, just pick up the towels, clean up their spat-out toothpaste blobs and flush the toilet now and again.

dadshere · 17/02/2017 23:13

I would know true and everlasting joy if she would just put away her book after she has finished with it and before she takes another one. I am constantly picking up and returning books to the bookshelf-- I feel like a librarian in a rough library.

finova · 17/02/2017 23:15

To sort out their toys!
I'm also itching to get out in the garden and deadhead/pull up all the brown plants. Would like to put them to work there!

JoJoBaldwin · 18/02/2017 09:53

My daughter is only 8 so I don't ask her to do much, but think it is time to start! My dream is that she will love hoovering as I totally hate it.

Rosehips · 18/02/2017 12:04

4 year old, spend all day entertaining the baby

daisybeebee · 18/02/2017 16:43

What a fabulous idea Count Olaf, I could get them Molly's/ Wally's maids outfits and big feather dusters and they could crawl into all the hard to reach corners and under their beds to give them a good dust . They could also clean the walls of mucky handprints and scribbles since this is a never ending task.

hotmessmom82 · 18/02/2017 18:05

I don't really mind anything apart from putting clean washing away. The most thankless task of all!

phillie1 · 18/02/2017 19:40

put their things away!

vickyors · 18/02/2017 21:26

I would like my daughter to vacuum, clean the house and then bring me gin. Am I a bad parent?

NoMudNoLotus · 18/02/2017 22:47

It would be nice for it be reasonable to ask them to :

make me a months worth of slimming world meals to freeze
mend the kitchen cupboard
dust the house
clean the carpets
clean the sofa
iron a weeks worth of clothes
do all the laundry for the week
take the rubbish out every day
clean up after the rabbit & dog all week

I think that's it.

My house isn't as ewwww as yours though Count Olaf and perhaps you should consider tumble drying your underpants rather than line drying them. Much softer.
