Hello, hello, hello… It is I, Count Olaf – guardian of the Baudelaire orphans Violet, Klaus and Sunny, and magnificent and respected theatre performer.

Violet is the eldest; she is followed by Klaus, and then Sunny, who is an infant. I have provided these lucky orphans with a rat-infested room - including a complementary pile of rocks at no cost to them, and shampoo that encourages tears - and I believe, therefore, that I am quite justified in asking them to do a range of minor chores for me in return.

My list includes:

  • Keep the kitchen gleamingly clean
  • Keep the library well dusted
  • Polish the floors in the ballroom
  • Hang my undergarments in the laundry room after they've washed them
  • Weed, mow, and preen the gardens
  • Chop wood in the back yard

Alas, these wealthy brats have been utterly spoilt! They've never done a chore in their lives, and therefore believe that I am BU to ask them to carry out such tasks - which is why, my adoring MNer fans, I wish to ask you: which chores you wish you could ask your DCs to do?

I feel your anguish having to spend more time with your DCs since it’s half term, so what chores do you wish you could ask your DCs to do during half term? Would you like your moody teenager to be able to whip up a Michelin star meal? Or your toddler to not only put away their toys, but also hoover the lounge? Whether it’s something small like wanting your DCs to do the washing up or make their own beds, or something more elaborate like wishing they would Marie Kondo your wardrobe or build you a garden retreat, tell me, Count Olaf - and I will reward one of you with a £300 voucher.

Yours most handsomely,

Count Olaf

mine are grown up now, but I always wanted them to help in the garden. I dont particularly like gardening but I thought that if we did things together then we would have spent time together, they would have had some fresh air, and some exercise, but they prefered ( and prefer ) to watch tv

SSCRASE123 · 12/02/2017 19:33

I have so many jobs for my little man to do in the garden to help out. I'm offering/bribing with rewards so he is more than keen :-)

chrissy53438 · 12/02/2017 19:54

clean the toilet, change the bed

Gooseygoosey12345 · 12/02/2017 20:30

ANYTHING! Just keeping the bedrooms clean and tidy would be enough. Alas, the washing pile awaits... 😩

tinkerx5 · 12/02/2017 20:33

Tidy the WHOLE house, top to bottom before I get home...oh and make dinner!

StandUnderMyUmbrella · 12/02/2017 20:58

I wish to ask my dear child if instead of just chucking everything into drawers and storage baskets, she would actually sort them out and arrange them all neatly! xx

Stinkadoodle · 12/02/2017 21:13

I would love my kids to tidy their rooms, they are so very messy. Dc2 shoves clothes in drawers in no order and they are left half in and half out. Also pulls out clean clothes and leaves them all around the room mixing with the dirty clothes just randomly left on the floor, desk, bookcase, bed.........
Picking up after themselves without being asked.
Btw-we have watched and loved this series of unfortunate events and can't wait for the next series.

cozza777 · 12/02/2017 21:21

I would quite like my boys to make there own beds and tidy up after themselves but most of all I would like my four nearly five year old son to start wiping his own arse!!!

BathshebaDarkstone · 12/02/2017 21:28

Get me up, help me get dressed, put toothpaste on my toothbrush, make me breakfast, tell me when it's time to leave, then do the shopping, make supper, put my pyjamas out, wash my clothes and hang them on radiators.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 12/02/2017 21:34

Learn to cook something other than pancakes, anything they're very nice and all but...

Also the mysterious art of putting her clothes on an actual clothes hanger. I think she invented the word floorganised.

Summerholidayblues · 12/02/2017 21:41

Mow the lawn, wash the curtains, get all of the grubby white baby gros white again, find their missing jigsaw pieces, file the admin, give me a pedicure (of shop, not 2 year old, standards....
That will do for starters!

queenofthebucket · 12/02/2017 21:51

Anything, just do something.

Pmliu · 12/02/2017 22:37

I wish my 3 year old can clear up her own toys & maybe do the washing up. She does try and help out around the house but I find the more she tries to help the more I got to do

sbruin1122 · 12/02/2017 23:37

do all the shopping!

Theimpossiblegirl · 13/02/2017 00:09

I'd be happy if they tidied their own rooms properly. They seem to go up there, move a few bits, find some stuff they haven't seen for a while and get totally distracted.

(Says she who is on Mumsnet instead of doing any housework) :)

muppet1501 · 13/02/2017 08:16

I would love my kids to keep their room tidy, hoover and dust ( i hate this job) They will make me drinks and on some occasions my 6yr DD will help me load the washing machine

bubbleybooboo · 13/02/2017 09:57

Cooking has to be the one thing id love for them to do. The would be able to see what i go through every meal time when 'Cafe Mum' opens as they dont all ever want the same thing! They dont make it easy!

southernsun · 13/02/2017 10:16

The dusting, dont mind most chores but that is the one I really dislike doing

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 13/02/2017 10:38

Marie Kondo my house please.

PeggyMitchell123 · 13/02/2017 10:54

My ds(3) is pretty good for his age. Will tidy his toys, will take his bowls, plate etc into kitchen and sink and will help dust.

I would love him to be able to wash up, it's a job I hate!

sailorcherries · 13/02/2017 11:42

I'm 26 weeks pregnant and wish my 6 year old could empty the cat litter boxes for me. I can't go near them without throwing up but can't leave them until OH comes home. He can't clean them because he also throws up at the smell so I ended up cleaning poo and little boy sick.

I do wish he'd clean the bathrooms (as I hide upstairs under the pretence of cleaning) and perhaps make me a cuppa or hot chocolate. With breakfast in bed ...

TellMeItsNotTrue · 13/02/2017 11:42

Emptying the bin, its something even I struggle with so there is no way they can do it they have tried to help, it is more of a hindrance

PrincessWizard · 13/02/2017 12:27

I would love for mine to remember to bring down their dirty cups and washing BEFORE i've put the dishwasher/washing machine on. Also for the eldest to put away her clean clothes in the wardrobe rather than on her 'chairdrobe' Grin

They aren't too bad really but do have to be reminded a lot, nothing gets done without being asked a least twice Hmm

cwalliss82 · 13/02/2017 12:49

I would love them to spring clean their bedrooms. I encourage them to give me any toys that they no longer play with which we donate to a Children's Hospice along with clothes that they have grown out of. It is about time that they did another clean out.

Laurajp35 · 13/02/2017 13:43

I wish my DC would pick up after herself when she's been playing and help me clean the kitchen. I came down to make breakfast this morning to find a load of her glitter and sprinkles from craft making all over the floor!
