We're a family of big Lego fans but with a 14 year old and a 12 year old in the house I was despairing of ever buying actual toys again (rather than Steam vouchers and nail varnishes). But in November we had a Christmas miracle as DS suddenly discovered all of his old Lego kits, got them out and rebuilt them and researched a selection of new kits he wanted on YouTube. We sent the word out to all our relatives, coaxed him into packing most of his kits away in time to make space for Christmas, and were rewarded on Christmas Day by perhaps one last sighting of our little boy excitedly spending Christmas morning building his new Lego kits.

Or maybe not the last sighting, since DH got an enormous Lego Porsche for Christmas. DH is 46.

It feels special especially when they come downstairs and catch the first glimpse of presents. Either me or my husband always have the camera ready for to video there reactions.

Feel nostalgic and reminded of the cycle of life..........

My youngest dc(9) still believes so it was lovely to see his excitement as he wondered what Santa had brought and there was also relief that Santa had managed to wade through the ever changing gift ideas he had come up with and picked the right few gifts that he really enjoyed playing with!

ilovesprouts · 26/12/2016 17:11

my son has special needs he's 10 he's never played with his toys from last year never mind this year it kind of makes me sad that he loves playing with my iPhone 6 he didn't even open his present this year he wasn't interestedSad

I am usually engrossed in watching them play and quite often surprised by which present is the favourite. This year we bought our 6 year old a replacement kindle for the one he broke and sorely misses and was totally surprised that he spent all Christmas day building Lego and did not ask for his kindle until bedtime.

JJJWWW · 26/12/2016 22:23

Complete joy and love (and a small bit of tiredness!)

FurryTurnip · 27/12/2016 09:14

Agree with some others, despite not going overboard at all, it leaves me feeling a little flat and guilty because it is all so excessive. My DS has a Christmas time birthday too so it all just feels overwhelming.

gamerwidow · 27/12/2016 10:10

Relief that they like them! It's lovely to see my Dd jumping up and down in excitement when you've managed to surprise them with the perfect toy. This year I bought DD an electronic diary she's been after for the last two years. She hasn't asked for it and has no idea she was getting it but her face was a picture when she opened it. She was thrilled.

HerChristmasFattyness · 27/12/2016 12:05

I feel relief that they like them, I feel joy when they ask me to play with them, and I feel lucky to be able to give them such great memories.

Marg2k8 · 27/12/2016 15:58

My children are older now, but when they were little, they would often be happier playing with the cardboard box than the toy that came inside it.

Whyisitsodifficult · 27/12/2016 19:01

Just the pure look of awe and wonderment when they see their sacks and the realisation that 'he's' been! I have three so it's quite a challenge keeping track of them as they rip everything open so quickly!

Mum2mischiefs · 27/12/2016 19:24

I love to watch the pure unbridled joy on my three boys' faces when they open their presents - it always makes me feel very emotional. I think it's a combination of remembering what it's like to enjoy the magic of Christmas as a child, relief that they like their presents (hopefully) and on a base level, the hunter-gatherer somewhere in me is glad that I've been able to provide for my offspring! Once the presents are opened, I'm ticking off the 'to do' list in my head ready for Christmas dinner. OH and I try and share vegetable peeling and toy assembling duties to get everything done!!

compy99 · 27/12/2016 21:26

I think of how long they took to buy and wrap up and how quickly they are all opened! I enjoy watching them being opened and then wondering where we will put them all!

mja100 · 27/12/2016 21:32

This year was extra special for us as it was our first Christmas with our little one who we adopted in the summer. His face as he went downstairs and the anticipation of wondering if santa has been was priceless. When he saw his presents he jumped up and down and did an excited dance, with a huge smile saying 'I've got lots of presents'! It was the best feeling in the world ever seeing him so happy and being able to start our own little family traditions.

Anniehello · 28/12/2016 02:57

A very Christmas feeling. Seeing the presents being unwrapped with reds and golds everywhere. It's a time of excitement and anticipation for the children and me. There's sounds of laughter and cheer as the children play with their new toys.

Cambam2010 · 28/12/2016 11:38

My DS has been with his dad in Scotland this year and doesn't arrive home until tonight so I haven't yet seen him open this years gifts but I just know he will be over joyed as I have managed to source something from his list that was only available in the USA and he really isn't expecting to get. Last year he got a Wii U and hadn't been expecting it due to the price of it and when he opened it he just sat back and said "am I dreaming?" - the pure joy on his face makes all the stresses and worries worth it.

finova · 28/12/2016 12:06

I feel relieved when they love their presents as so much is made of Christmas....then worried about how I'll store it all.

Summerholidayblues · 28/12/2016 12:34

I felt slightly anxious - especially when opening presents from others as I thought she would say she didn't like or already had presents that family members gave to her!

However, she (aged 2) was really excited by all gifts, taking time to open and play with each one. It made me wonder why we rush present giving - she would have been really happy with one present every couple of hours on the day!

Trolleybus1 · 28/12/2016 14:11

pretend I am peter pan and join in with them

PeggyMitchell123 · 28/12/2016 14:20

I felt a lot of happiness watching my son open his santa present. It was a power rangers megazord he has been asking after for months! He was overjoyed and has not stopped playing with it. You hear him make up stories for his power rangers and it is great to see a child use their imagination with toys.

kateandme · 28/12/2016 14:49

I think this is where following our rules of having one major pressie and few other little things comes good.not bidding to their cries of wanting and needing it all.becasue if we listened to them the smiles of playing with this one wanted and receivedspecial gift wouldn't be as good.
they are so appreciative and then grateful of the little dded extras.
and I adore when they keep looking at you and the back to the toy with pride.

Makemineavodka74 · 28/12/2016 20:58

Overwhelming joy when I know that from their massive lists I have selected the actual presents they would appreciated the most and get the most use out of.

Tkw2014 · 28/12/2016 21:30

I love watching the kids playing with their toys. Its great seeing them discover new things and it makes me laugh when they want each others things rather than their own or something that was a simple stocking filler for me is this years hit! I love seeing their faces when they open all their presents!

SuckingEggs · 29/12/2016 00:11

It's the potential I love - seeing their brains fire up with excitement and possibilities. Toys are about growing and learning and, of course, fun!
