The Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate, Part I. £300 Love2Shop voucher to be won NOW CLOSED

To celebrate Fairy Non Bio’s sponsorship of the Mumsnet Talk App, we’re launching the Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate – as with all great Wink series, it's a three-parter. Part I is about how often you wash your bed sheets (as we know, always a hot topic on Mumsnet).

We all know that washing bed sheets can be total faff: there’s stripping the bed, then there’s putting the wash on (are you a warm 40C or a hot 90C type?) Then there’s hanging it out and the struggle for drying space (unless you use the dryer Blush?) After that there’s folding - and, for the super-keen, perhaps even ironing. Finally, there’s getting the darn things back on the bed.

So - how often do you wash your bed sheets? And how often do you wash your DC’s bed sheets? Do you have a specific process? Perhaps you change pillow cases weekly, but sheets and duvet covers every two weeks? How often do you change your mattress protector (Blush again)? Do you use softener?

Whatever your bed sheet-washing process, do share it with Fairy Non Bio in the thread below, and maybe even give us a live update from the Mumsnet Talk App as you're waiting for the load to finish Grin.

Everyone who posts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Every fortnight, usually on a Sunday, it always has to be on a bath day because I refuse to get into a clean bed without having a bath (odd I know). Obviously if someone is sick or they have acquired dirt or stains, which is the case at the minute as the oldest daughter has a habit of going to bed with make up on, then it might be more often than fortnightly.

shoebedo434 · 07/08/2016 19:58

I change our sheets every fortnight and my son's every month
I wash on the normal 40 c
I try to hang on the line and it is so easier but in winter with no tumble dryer, I normally hang over the bannisters or the folding hanger
I do not add anything extra to the wash, I just wash with my other items with a liquid tablet

marymanc · 07/08/2016 20:10

I love going to sleep in freshly cleaned bedding but I change our beds every 2 weeks. I don't mind in the Summer as I wash and dry the bedding on the same day, but in the winter I hate drying them around the house.

Sometimes I change my bed one day and the two children's another day to avoid getting too tired. I wash the sheets at 40C and love putting them outside when it is sunny. I wash the mattress covers every two months and hoover the bed too for the occasion!!

planepointer · 07/08/2016 20:28

Every 1-2 weeks.

rabbit123 · 07/08/2016 20:35

All our bedding gets changed weekly without fail. The kindsize sets go in on their own on cottons 60, the single bedsets go in 2 at a time on the same cycle. Mattress protectors are washed on alternate weeks on synthetics 60. I don't use any fabric softener.

I have an odd set up where there's always 1 set of bedding on and 1 in the washing basket. At the weekend, I will wash all the bedding and put then clean, fresh off the line sheets straight onto the beds. The dirty bedding then goes into the baskets and gets washed the next week and put straight on the bed clean etc. That way, the bedding that goes on is always fresh and hasn't been sat around for a week.

I prefer to line dry where I can, but use the dryer if it's wet.

CountessOfStrathearn · 07/08/2016 20:52

All the beds are changed every week, washed at 40C and ideally dried outside. I very rarely wash the mattress protector and just when I remember so every few months? No ironing happens at all.

honeyb11 · 07/08/2016 20:57

I change the sheets more regularly in the summer when it's hot at night, at least once a week and have about 5 sets to alternate between. I already use Fairy and it's great :)

tiddles12 · 07/08/2016 21:09

every 2 weeks including the mattress protector

becks171 · 07/08/2016 21:13

I try to wash them every week or 2 weeks, I'd love to be able to have a dryer to dry them but unfortunately I have to find space like hanging on the tops of doors.

grumpymummy3 · 07/08/2016 21:19

Fortnightly for us too sometimes even longer for the kids if I cant get into their rooms to do it.

JoJoBaldwin · 07/08/2016 21:25

Once a week

shivbrown · 07/08/2016 21:27

I was our bed sheets every 2 weeks :) Nothing better then fresh clean bedding x

ThisUsernameIsAvailable · 07/08/2016 21:30

All bedding once a week.
Little Kids bedding on a Tuesday , mine and teenagers on a Wednesday.

Sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases in one wash and throws/fleeces in another, all washed on 40 with bio powder and a large measurement of softener. I prefer to line dry but radiators will do in a push.

There's a routine with this aswell. We always have a bath on a clean bedding day, there's nothing like being freshly bathed,Clean pyjamas and clean bedding Flowers

BellaWella86 · 07/08/2016 21:35

I wash them weekly.

HuckleberryQuinn · 07/08/2016 21:35

Once a week here. I think if I won the lottery I would hire someone purely to change them every day. Smile

It's normally every two weeks, but more often in the hot weather!

hookiewookie29 · 07/08/2016 21:41

Roughly every three weeks. On a 60 wash. The kids are 13&18 so strip their beds when they think they need it, usually fortnightly. All tumble dried. The kids remake their own beds and we do ours.

Rangirl · 07/08/2016 21:44

Weekly Have 2 sets which makes it easier and means I can wait for a good drying day All white cotton Wash at 60,dry outside All ironed If I won the lottery I would pay someone to change the bed daily

Houseof5boys · 07/08/2016 22:25

I wash bedding every fortnight (ish) sometimes more often sometimes less often.
Mattress protectors and pillow protectors are washed about once a month.
I wash at 60 and add dettol laundry disinfectant and softener. I like to line dry but will tumble dry if it's raining or in on a rush!
I only iron duvet covers, nothing else unless it's really creased.

fuzzywuzzy · 07/08/2016 22:37

Wash bedding weekly, 60 degree wash.

DC do their own beds, strip and bring down to wash, eldest DC runs the wash DC help eachother make their beds dp and I make our bed.

Either dry it outside on the line or indoors on a wire drying thing with windows wide open. It's an arse drying in winter as don't have a dryer, so switch to fortnightly with DC bedding done the week after ours.

I'm prolly a slattern by MN standards.

seeingdouble2 · 07/08/2016 22:39

I tend to wash my sheets weekly unless we are having a heat wave like a few weeks ago then I will wash them every other day.

Tkw2014 · 07/08/2016 22:51

One of the worst housework jobs in my opinion is changing the sheets although I love it getting into a bed of fresh sheets! I change kids beds roughly fortnightly wash, tumble dry (unless its really sunny) and back on beds in the same day. DH changes our bed as I hate doing it!

HermyOne · 07/08/2016 23:00

How often do you wash your bed sheets? Once every two weeks Blush

And how often do you wash your DC’s bed sheets?
I have no DC, just me

Do you have a specific process?
Not particularly, just wack em in on 40.

Perhaps you change pillow cases weekly, but sheets and duvet covers every two weeks?
I wash everything fortnightly apart from the decorative throw that goes on top - that just gets washed if it's stained to be honest

How often doyou change your mattress protector)?
I get a new one every year (not sure if that's disgusting or not to be honest Blush)

Do you use softener?
Yes, makes it smell divine Grin

purplevamp · 07/08/2016 23:15

I wash mine between 2-4 weeks, depending on how busy I am or how I'm feeling. I doubt if everyone changes theirs weekly, little fibbers Grin
