The Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate, Part I. £300 Love2Shop voucher to be won NOW CLOSED

To celebrate Fairy Non Bio’s sponsorship of the Mumsnet Talk App, we’re launching the Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate – as with all great Wink series, it's a three-parter. Part I is about how often you wash your bed sheets (as we know, always a hot topic on Mumsnet).

We all know that washing bed sheets can be total faff: there’s stripping the bed, then there’s putting the wash on (are you a warm 40C or a hot 90C type?) Then there’s hanging it out and the struggle for drying space (unless you use the dryer Blush?) After that there’s folding - and, for the super-keen, perhaps even ironing. Finally, there’s getting the darn things back on the bed.

So - how often do you wash your bed sheets? And how often do you wash your DC’s bed sheets? Do you have a specific process? Perhaps you change pillow cases weekly, but sheets and duvet covers every two weeks? How often do you change your mattress protector (Blush again)? Do you use softener?

Whatever your bed sheet-washing process, do share it with Fairy Non Bio in the thread below, and maybe even give us a live update from the Mumsnet Talk App as you're waiting for the load to finish Grin.

Everyone who posts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Weekly at 40 degrees and hung out on line or tumbled. I love the smell and feeling of a clean bed, however hate making up the beds but teenage DSs would live in their beds if given the chance and require frequent changes.

goldenretriever1978 · 14/08/2016 10:28

I wash mine at least fortnightly and the kids when they need it - which could be every two days depending on their antics 😐 I always use softener and put it on a 40 degree wash. Ideally to dry outside but tumble dryer if the weather if pants. Havw enough to do without ironing them!

ivykaty44 · 14/08/2016 13:10

I have now started changing the sheet first, then a few days later the duvet cover and a few more days the pillow cases.

This way the bedding is always fresh, much less faff to do one element at a time and less lune space needed.

Sometimes I do strip the whole set and then immediately make with another set of covers.

I hate going to bed only to realise I need to make the entire bed up.

ivykaty44 · 14/08/2016 13:13

Oh I was at 30 as I line dry which I believe gets rid of most nasty and makes fresher than a hot wash.

Never use fabric conditioners

Mostly iron bedding for my bed but not teen dds bed clothes

HelenSw4les · 14/08/2016 16:30

I make sure they're changed weekly (usually Fridays) but only wash them on a day that I can get them dry outside so often I will have two or three loads for a bright and breezy day.

Spud90 · 14/08/2016 17:29

Once a week in summer(when it's been warm) as DS sweats buckets. Fortnightly in winter. I wash at 60 and dry outside if possible if not then tumble dry. I use fabric conditioner and I only iron my Oxford pillowcases because they're high thread count and the trim looks ridiculous if it's not ironed! It's the worst part of washing the bedding

brackengirl · 14/08/2016 18:07

I wash them twice weekly, and line dry if possible. I always wash inside out so it's easier to put back on. I do the mattress protector every other time. Kids sheets are much easier so often do them weekly.

caroll1234 · 14/08/2016 18:30

I do it every two to four weeks, especially during summer time.

cheryl100 · 14/08/2016 18:57

we do ours fortnightly!

emms88 · 14/08/2016 21:12

I was my sheets weekly.

Leeanne2205 · 14/08/2016 21:51

I wash all the household bedding weekly spoons as its dry I like to get it ironed I have inherited my mother's habits like to dry it outside on line I always use a conditioner.
I like to use a bed linen spray on my bed linen between washes.
When I dry my towels outside they do feel v hard so I pop them in tumble drier for a few mins to make them soft again.

featherpillow · 14/08/2016 23:22

I wash bedding weekly at 60 degrees. It used to be at 30 until I read somewhere that bedding needs to be washed at 60 or 90!

I use non bio powder and softener and line dry when its nice out!

mysaladdays · 14/08/2016 23:24

Every couple of weeks, at the weekend so I can get it washed, dried and folded away in one day- purely because otherwise small children are likely to get their hands on it to make a den or whatever and I'll end up having to do it again!
DC bed linen is weekly, or immediately if someone is sick or has an accident. I find it much less hassle to get the washing machine on in the middle of the night than come down to dirty bed sheets that need sorting the morning after.

I don't iron it, always use softener plus whitener/vanish and if I can't line dry it will put it in the dryer.

mysaladdays · 14/08/2016 23:25

......and I wash at 40 unless one of the DC has had an accident and then it goes on at 60.

GloveBug · 14/08/2016 23:27

Sheets get washed once a week at 40c. DDs sheets can get washed as often as every day when she's going through a bed wetting phase :(

XL · 15/08/2016 05:24

All bed linen At least weekly with fairy and comfort pure on a 40 degree wash then tumblr dry

MaMattoo · 15/08/2016 05:27

Sheets/ duvet covers/ pillowcases once in 10 days. All of us get pretty hot pretty quick and with the musical chair version of beds in the house, all beds need changing every week and a half, even every week if the sun comes out.

Breadwidow · 15/08/2016 06:54

Approx once a week for ours, sometimes a couple off days longer. DS I do around once a fortnight but only cos he's in our beds fair bit! I wash at 40, am not brand loyal with washing powder, use whats on offer and switch between bio & non bio with no probs. Don't tumble as we don't have one and I don't iron them, too lazy for that

SistersOfPercy · 15/08/2016 12:38

Every week, at 30 with Fairy Non Bio. The kids are adults so clean bedding is left in their room for them to change. I also use the tumble dryer all the time now and don't have a washing line.

I don't iron bedding, but I fold the sheet, pillowcase and duvet and put it into one of the bed set pillowcases which creates a complete 'bed in a bag' so I can just reach in the airing cupboard, grab a complete set and get on with it.

sadiewoohoo · 15/08/2016 13:59

Always once a week in our house

Lilaclily · 15/08/2016 15:45

We wash fort nightly at 40 degrees and dry in tumble dryer , no ironing

If we go away I always wash bedding before we go so we can come home to nice clean sheets

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 15/08/2016 16:50

I was the bedding ever 2-3 weeks, all at the same time. The waterproof sheets are not washed so often. I always use those little scent balls in the machine, and liquid and fabric conditioner, and wash at 40C. I dry everything in the tumble dryer and don't iron anything.

I love the smell of fresh soft bedding but don't have the time or inclination to wash it weekly.

glenthebattleostrich · 15/08/2016 21:05

Usually weekly on a Friday (usually my day off) but I've been working full time over the holidays so it has slipped to every 2 weeks. Feel a bit grotty that they are not being done more often. Wash them at 40 degrees and air dry, always air dry, for some odd reason I can't stand tumble drying my bedding. They are put on the clothing airer as we no longer have a washing line. Must get round to getting a new one.

We don't use fabric conditioner, DD and I have eczema.

If I'm feeling very flush I pay my friends Niece to iron them too but mostly they get put back on crumpled.

Mattress and pillow protectors get done monthly, same way as sheets.

juju3 · 16/08/2016 07:38

At least once a week usually twice

lynwestie · 16/08/2016 11:37

Honestly ?? Oh very bad.. 2 weeks - sometimes 3 !!
