The Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate, Part I. £300 Love2Shop voucher to be won NOW CLOSED

To celebrate Fairy Non Bio’s sponsorship of the Mumsnet Talk App, we’re launching the Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate – as with all great Wink series, it's a three-parter. Part I is about how often you wash your bed sheets (as we know, always a hot topic on Mumsnet).

We all know that washing bed sheets can be total faff: there’s stripping the bed, then there’s putting the wash on (are you a warm 40C or a hot 90C type?) Then there’s hanging it out and the struggle for drying space (unless you use the dryer Blush?) After that there’s folding - and, for the super-keen, perhaps even ironing. Finally, there’s getting the darn things back on the bed.

So - how often do you wash your bed sheets? And how often do you wash your DC’s bed sheets? Do you have a specific process? Perhaps you change pillow cases weekly, but sheets and duvet covers every two weeks? How often do you change your mattress protector (Blush again)? Do you use softener?

Whatever your bed sheet-washing process, do share it with Fairy Non Bio in the thread below, and maybe even give us a live update from the Mumsnet Talk App as you're waiting for the load to finish Grin.

Everyone who posts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Every 10 days. I work shifts, so they get done after my last nightshift so I have a clean bed to get back into at night-these things are important!

queenoftheschoolrun · 01/08/2016 18:52

Fortnightly, changing one set a week. Usually wash at 60. Line dry in Summer and tumble dry the rest of the year. I iron the duvet covers and pillowcases because they get really creased. Love getting into a bed with clean sheets.

LadyCallandraDaviot · 01/08/2016 18:54

4 double beds to change here, so do 2 each week. No line or tumble dryer so on the maiden or over the bannisters to dry. Rarely ironed.

FeelingSmurfy · 01/08/2016 18:58

Every 2-3 weeks unless something has been spilled/vomit/pee

I wish I could say every day, if I won the lottery I would employ someone to change all the bedding daily, love getting in to a fresh bed

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 01/08/2016 18:58

DS's is washed 3 or 4 times a bloody week Angry

You can't beat stripping, washing, drying and then getting them straight back on again on a nice day. It's just not the same out of the cupboard.

GruffaloPants · 01/08/2016 18:58

Every 3 or 4 weeks... More if needed... Glad to see we aren't the only mingers around here. Have survived to this age without it doing any harm.

HoneyDragon · 01/08/2016 19:07

Once a week, quick wash 60 degrees biological powder and Cabrini conditioner.

Obviously wash straight away if soiled.

Will go ten days if I'm ill or busy.

I strip my bed and dh's bed and wash them together.

Then do dd and ds's together.

HoneyDragon · 01/08/2016 19:07

*fabric conditioner

Our bed fortnightly 40 degree wash washed and straight back on, Dc washed weekly as she's a hot girl, all in fairy non bio tabs with softener, put out to dry as often as possible in the garden, they feel much nicer and fresher that way!!

Janey50 · 01/08/2016 19:11

I change and wash my bedsheet and pillow cases once a week, unless something,e.g. coffee, gets spilt on it. I change the duvet cover every 2 - 3 weeks as it's such a palaver taking it off and putting a new one on. It all gets washed at 40 degrees, don't see the need for any hotter than that. In summer,I look like to put it all outside on the washing line as it's usually dry in a couple of hours. In winter,it goes on my heater clothes airer. I bless the day I bought that as it been worth it's weight in gold.

Energumene · 01/08/2016 19:18

Every two weeks or so all year round, except in summer when it's weekly, or on the rare occasion someone is ill, in which case it's as needed.

Tend to do most bedding on 60c with a Persil small and mighty bio - DS and I are allergic to non bio detergents for some reason, as we are to various handwashes and washing up liquids.

Mattress protector doesn't get too grubby, so once every couple of months.

loosechange · 01/08/2016 19:29

Washed every second week, alternating the children's beds with ours each week. Mattress protector washed as needed.

I wash at 40, use fabric softener. Unless it's sunny /windy I use the tumble drier, prior to that I hung them out on a laundry drier inside the house and waited.

I don't iron. I fold the duvet and a bedsheet into the pillow case following a MN tip here. Much better storage and saves hunting for the various components needed to make the bed.

I tried to master the nifty way to fold fitted sheets as per you tube, but I am too cag handed.

My recent revelation is making beds as they do in hospital, stripping the sheet on one side and simultaneously putting on the next one, then working my way across the bed. Much more efficient.

Smutlybobs · 01/08/2016 19:31

Every two weeks. Changing a super king size duvet cover on my own is a task I like to put off as long as possible

Eurovision · 01/08/2016 19:33

All beds changed weekly or more if any nighttime incidents. Love the smell and feel of clean bedding especially if line dried. No ironing so usually bedding is back on by bedtime.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 01/08/2016 19:33

Normally every week, sometimes fortnightly if the beds haven't been slept in much. I wash almost everything at 40 degrees. Dry it all on the line if it's dry out, airer if not. We don't have a tumble dryer. I don't iron.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 01/08/2016 19:33

Every Sunday, the kids' beds every fortnight. Pillow cases rotated and washed more often. I love a clean bed Smile

ItsaTenfromDen · 01/08/2016 19:34

I change our bed weekly, sometimes twice a week when it's really hot.

I strip the bed, put the wash on, go back upstairs and remake it straight away with my second set of bedding. I have these in a blanket box and always store them inside a pillowcase for easy finding. I hate finding out at bedtime that I've forgotten to remake the bed.

Also do the kids weekly too, but they can remake their own:)

ateapotandacake · 01/08/2016 19:36

I change our bed every two weeks or sooner if the blinking cat hasn't shed hair all over it. Mattress protector a few times a year (er, when I remember) and pillow protectors more frequently.
I use softener but only because my DH likes it Grin and it has to be the most perfumed one too for some reason! I like a nice mild baby smelling one myself!
DS still sleeps in baby sleeping bags so his cot sheet is less frequent and generally when visibly milky.
I sound a bit scrungy now, maybe I should up my game a bit... I definitely don't have a routine!

UpOnDown · 01/08/2016 19:38

I do all bedding once a week.

leccybill · 01/08/2016 19:38

About every third week here. Normal 40 degree wash. Wait for a dry day to get it on the line as no dryer.
Draped over the landing in winter.

Hate this chore the most but like the feeling of clean sheets.

TartanTrousers · 01/08/2016 19:41

Argh, it's probably about once every 3 weeks for our bedsheets and once every 4/5 weeks for our DC. We're always clean getting in to bed so unless it's sweltering heat and we're sweating then I don't feel the need to wash more frequently Blush

Mattress protector is done once every couple of months I reckon! I managed to wash and dry it in the drier though recently so maybe it's a contender for washing more frequently.

Always use softener... Got to use softener. Nothing worse than crunchy sheets!

EDisFunny · 01/08/2016 19:49

I wash my sheets every two weeks and the duvet cover every month. I was my children's sheets every week and their duvet covers every two weeks. I would do everything every week but I don't have a tumble dryer.

Loulou2kent · 01/08/2016 19:50

All beds get done every Sunday morning, washed at 60 always with persil & blue comfort or lenor. Tumbled dry straight away, ironed & back on beds same day.

Won't line dry because of allergies & I don't like the smell of its line dried Blush I'm odd.

Protectors get washed every time schools break up.

Tbf we all have showers before bed anyway so the sheets still smell of washing all week so could be done less, but there is nothing like getting into fresh sheets on a Sunday night.

If I'm going on holiday they have to be washed & dried & put back on that day ready for when I get home.

All these posts are making me want to go wash my sheets now! Best smell ever!

RhubarbAndMustard · 01/08/2016 19:54

Once every 3 weeks or so. DC's more often usually due to bed wetting and/ or milk spit up.

Always use softener and a hot wash to make them smell fresh. No tumble dryer so out on the line where possible. If not it's over the stair bannister as that's the warmest spot in the house and they'll dry within 24hrs. I'd really love them to be ironed but it's never going to happen.

peaceloveandtwirlywoos · 01/08/2016 19:54

I change them when they start to look a bit crusty Confused usually every couple of weeks. I change DS' sleeping bag every 3/4 days or more often if it's dirty, but his cot sheet every ten days-two weeks.
Out and proud minger Grin
