The Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate, Part I. £300 Love2Shop voucher to be won NOW CLOSED

To celebrate Fairy Non Bio’s sponsorship of the Mumsnet Talk App, we’re launching the Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate – as with all great Wink series, it's a three-parter. Part I is about how often you wash your bed sheets (as we know, always a hot topic on Mumsnet).

We all know that washing bed sheets can be total faff: there’s stripping the bed, then there’s putting the wash on (are you a warm 40C or a hot 90C type?) Then there’s hanging it out and the struggle for drying space (unless you use the dryer Blush?) After that there’s folding - and, for the super-keen, perhaps even ironing. Finally, there’s getting the darn things back on the bed.

So - how often do you wash your bed sheets? And how often do you wash your DC’s bed sheets? Do you have a specific process? Perhaps you change pillow cases weekly, but sheets and duvet covers every two weeks? How often do you change your mattress protector (Blush again)? Do you use softener?

Whatever your bed sheet-washing process, do share it with Fairy Non Bio in the thread below, and maybe even give us a live update from the Mumsnet Talk App as you're waiting for the load to finish Grin.

Everyone who posts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Used to do DD once a week and ours fortnightly. Since being onMumsnet however our sheets are done weekly as well - al at 60.

2old2beamum · 06/08/2016 18:46

7 beds here all changed every week. I have a strict routine ? OCD here Wink Washed in 40 unless DD colostomy has fallen offShock which is quite often
Have a tumble dryer but only use it in emergencies.

I D0 NOT IRON

LP2016 · 06/08/2016 18:46

Once every 2 weeks, 40 degrees with dettol antibacterial and softener

Athenajm80 · 06/08/2016 18:58

Probably every fortnight. I wash them on 40 degrees and usually dry them over the banisters and on the clothes horse. I never iron them though, too much of a faff.

LeeR1985 · 06/08/2016 19:21

I do it once every 2 weeks because its a massive pain in the backside. I shower every day so thankfully the sheets don't get too stinky! Haha

alsproject · 06/08/2016 19:35

we try to change the sheets every week

Kitsune1972 · 06/08/2016 19:40

Erm . . . well, not very often it has to be said. I've got chronic fatigue syndrome and it literally hurts to put all the sheets, pillow cases, and duvet covers back on the beds. I know it's no excuse, though, and DH helps me when he's around. But it has to be said, every few months is my answer, if I'm being good - though certainly more often if there's reason to (e.g. stains, covered in dust from clearing out the room etc, sweating a lot in the heat). Public flogging time now for me? :(

delilahbucket · 06/08/2016 19:42

Ours and ds's bed changed every two weeks ish. 40 degrees for everything but the sheets which are done at 60. We have a washer dryer and can put it all in before work and it's dry before bed, although we have several sets.
Ds sleeps in a high sleeper and I can't do the sheet so dp does it. Our bed, I can strip it but getting the sheet back on is hard as I can't lift the mattress, and I struggle with the kingsize duvet cover as I'm short so dp does that too Grin.

kittykomp · 06/08/2016 19:48

every 2 weeks but I hate doing it!

MAT12 · 06/08/2016 20:04

We wash our bedding weekly and i like to wash it on a temp of 60.

madge47 · 06/08/2016 20:12

I wash the bed sheets every couple of weeks.

sarah861421 · 06/08/2016 20:18

Generally I change and wash the sheets / duvet cover / pillow cases every 2 weeks. HOWEVER I would say that getting into a fresh clean bed straight after a shower is one of the best feelings in the world

lozzi12345 · 06/08/2016 20:20

normally once in week then on sunday we call it big cleaning day so they get washed again

beeelaine · 06/08/2016 20:22

Sheets and duvet cover - every week - because i HAVE to - I am a very greasy person (and yep i do shower) but i tend to dream weird and wake up a lot all hot and stuffy! The pillowcases for me are every 2/3 days - i have really bad sinus and very greasy hair so they can get pretty disgusting (i even take my own pillowcases when we use b&b's as its embarrassing all the snot that is there in the morning) and I henna my hair so there is the slight colour loss which does wash out if you do it straight away. The mattress protector is about once a month BUT that is under 2 fresh fitted sheets which are religiously changed every week (because of me getting all hot at night). As for washing it all i dont mind, i just have a huge IKEA bag that all the bedding goes into and i wait for a dry day to wash the lot - has been known for it to pile up and i have done 4 11kg loads in one day).. and i am the person who pegs out even if it is frosty - as long as the sun comes out and the humidity is down they get half dry before going in the tumble drier. I always use conditioner as i like my bedding to smell fresh as well as being fresh and where they are stored dry is always lovely smelling! I LOVE doing the washing and i love changing the bed because i just love to get into a fresh bed! The sheets are folded really well (and if you google how to fold a fitted sheet there are videos on it and its a doddle to do). All bedding goes on a 60 degree wash and as we have a 11kg machine there is usually more than one set of bedding in there and i like to have egyptian cotton whenever i can because it washes and dries really well and feels great and the man loves fresh bedding too! as for my 14 year old son, his is changed the same as ours. The pillows have to be white cotton, the best quality ones are worth the money as I have had my white ones for years, they have had henna on them, snot all over them and they continually wash out and feel brand new when all clean again!

littleme96 · 06/08/2016 20:22

Fortnightly here. I don't really like doing it, so I do all of the beds in one go so that every other week is a week off! Love clean sheets though - just wish someone else would do it!

doctorboo · 06/08/2016 20:23

Four beds here - I feel like a saint for washing it all weekly when there's so many clothes to wash too!
I wash all the bedding at 60 degrees (that includes the 3 kids mattress protectors but not ours Blush which I rarely do) split it over 3 loads for that day. I'm not fussy with what I use, I go with whatever gives me the most washes for the lowest price Blush Blush and I bung it all in the tumble dryer - love that thing!!

Change ours once a week wash on 60 degrees with Fairy Non Bio powder (do I get Brownie points for that Grin?)

Change kids weekly washing at 40 or 60 depending on if it's a joint wash with ours.

Tumble dry in winter or outside in summer.

Ours are ironed as they're cotton but kids are poly cotton so don't need ironing as much.

ikeahauler · 06/08/2016 20:36

washed every 3 weeks ( but the odd time four never 4 weeks in summer months).ours which is pure cotton. we have lining pillow cases and every other change, they come off for a wash too. mattress protector - maybe every 3 months. we only use a gel non bio at 60 degree cycle and try to outdoor dry whenever possible or on an airing rack in the conservatory. we definitely dont iron the bedding, they are crinkle seersucker and the other is waffle so possibly get away with it??

dc1 who is 5 gets theirs changed max every 4 weeks except when they scratch their ear in their sleep and bloody up the pillow. their sheets are also pure cotton in white. the blood gets a quick scrub off with one of those old style green household soaps (if i notice it) and put in wash at 60 degrees or 50 if no visible snot on it!!! when dc2 moves to the bottom bunk and dc1 goes to the top, its going to be hard work changing beds!

dc2 who is 23 months gets the flat stretchy cotton sheet washed weekly and sleeping bag every fortnight or more if it smells whiffy! washed at 60 or 50 degrees.

DiploCat · 06/08/2016 20:47

Every other week, with powder detergent (whatevers on offer), fabric softer and vanish white. 90 degrees, and then in the tumble dryer. Pillow cases ironed, rest just folder whilst still warm.

HelsinkiLights · 06/08/2016 21:14

Fortnightly & wash all bedding at 60C or if someone has been ill then gets washed at 90C with either a shot of zoflora or vinegar added for disinfecting properties. (Though once used vodka!)
Use Ariel biological & Comfort.
Will line dry if weather good, if not then tumble dry.
Life is too short to iron bedding.

clairesamuel · 06/08/2016 21:17

All bed sheets get washed less than once a month because we hate doing it so much. They are never easy to get back on the bed.

essexchic · 06/08/2016 21:35

I wash my bedding weekly, love the smell of clean bedding.

Crown · 06/08/2016 21:36

Once a week on a hot wash

robinson131 · 06/08/2016 21:39

I change my sheets every four -five days,I don't like getting into bed if you can't smell the fabric conditioner.
