The Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate, Part I. £300 Love2Shop voucher to be won NOW CLOSED

To celebrate Fairy Non Bio’s sponsorship of the Mumsnet Talk App, we’re launching the Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate – as with all great Wink series, it's a three-parter. Part I is about how often you wash your bed sheets (as we know, always a hot topic on Mumsnet).

We all know that washing bed sheets can be total faff: there’s stripping the bed, then there’s putting the wash on (are you a warm 40C or a hot 90C type?) Then there’s hanging it out and the struggle for drying space (unless you use the dryer Blush?) After that there’s folding - and, for the super-keen, perhaps even ironing. Finally, there’s getting the darn things back on the bed.

So - how often do you wash your bed sheets? And how often do you wash your DC’s bed sheets? Do you have a specific process? Perhaps you change pillow cases weekly, but sheets and duvet covers every two weeks? How often do you change your mattress protector (Blush again)? Do you use softener?

Whatever your bed sheet-washing process, do share it with Fairy Non Bio in the thread below, and maybe even give us a live update from the Mumsnet Talk App as you're waiting for the load to finish Grin.

Everyone who posts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Every week in the summer but only fortnightly in the winter.

SellFridges · 06/08/2016 13:06

Every couple of weeks. More in the summer if it's hot. Kids the same.

I have a bed linen and towel fairy. She's also known as my mother in law. We don't have a tumble dryer and work full time so it really helps, especially in winter.

happysouls · 06/08/2016 13:06

It varys from 1 week to 2 weeks depending on good drying days, I like to plan the washing for when I can hang it outside to dry and keep costs down. We don't often wash the duvet cover though as we use a top sheet. This keeps the wash load a bit smaller and saves on the faff of putting the duvet cover back on which I don't like doing as we have a superkingsize and its heavy!

Once a fortnight xx

Rfsev1 · 06/08/2016 13:38

I wash all the bedding once a week, and sometimes pillowcases more often. I have two cats whose FAVOURITE game is mums trying to make the bed lets go and hide under the sheets and not come out! So that part often takes the longest.
I do love that fresh sheet feeling though, wish I could have it every day

alabaster002 · 06/08/2016 13:39

Once a week!

DawnieAdams · 06/08/2016 13:57

All beds get done weekly, 60 degress, don't believe in the 30 degress unless its delicates. Softener used and line dried when possible otherwise in the tumble dryer. Mattress protector gets done once a month. Sometimes mid week I will wash top pillow cases. Pillows also get washed every couple of months.

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 06/08/2016 14:08

Every week on 70 degree wash. All bed linen is white so add Vanish. Always use fabric softener and line dry if possible. Otherwise hang over clothes horse to remove bulk of dampness and then finish in tumble dryer

user1470426914 · 06/08/2016 14:22

Only one bed and a cot to worry about here. The sheets get changed every two weeks on the bed, and every few days on my little one's cot. He is 6 months and regurgitates quite a bit so its frequently changed!
:) I use persil non bio and comfort pure, wash on 40 easycares, spin@1600, then hang out to dry on the line. Once dry I fold and put away, no ironing for me!

Haffdonga · 06/08/2016 14:36

I'm deliberately not reading anyone else's answers because I know that I will never be able to live up to the standards of some of the desperate housewives who change everything 3 times a day.

In our house it's once a fortnight (but if I'm really honest it probably slips to once every three weeks more often than not).

Best tip - teach your dcs to make their own beds from the age of ten. Even the laziest smallest child is capable of changing a duvet if you teach them the technique of turning the cover inside out and holding the corners - known in our house as the dog poo method.

Haffdonga · 06/08/2016 14:37

oh, forgot to say - a 50 or 60 degree wash for linens and towels.

pusinky · 06/08/2016 14:41

I wash all the sheets every 2-3 weeks.

poshme · 06/08/2016 14:49

Our bed, DS & DD2 - once a week, 40 wash & line dry.
DD1- bed wetter, currently trying to solve it, so her bed linen lasts about 2-3 hours a night- so every morning I have 3 sheets & 3 duvets/quilts to wash Sad . Usually on 60 wash cos of being soaked in wee. Her pillow case done when I remember.

Hoping it'll be better by winter!

poshme · 06/08/2016 14:49

And none ironed.

BeJayKayven · 06/08/2016 15:20

Fortnightly, although I do the pillow cases every few days. Always on 60 degrees for sheets and towels.

ell5454 · 06/08/2016 15:21

I try to change the bedding every week but if I'm honest it's more like twice a month

julieef · 06/08/2016 15:31

Ha, just done them today, I usually do every 2 weeks, unless hubby tips tea on them then have to do more often

BL0SS0M · 06/08/2016 15:32

once a week on a hot wash low spin! love clean sheets day!

Leiajulie · 06/08/2016 15:46

every 3 weeks unless their have been any accidents overnight

padleys · 06/08/2016 16:39

This time of year we just have a sheet, so my bedding is washed once a week because we get hot in bed, in the winter we have a sheet under the quilt, so i wash the sheets and pillowcases every 7-10days. and quilt cover every two weeks. I use softener all the time, but can't really say it always keeps things soft. The childrens, every week come spring summer or winter, as they always seem to get mucky

ILikeBigBumpsAndICannotLie · 06/08/2016 17:02

Twice a week for the child's bed and fortnightly for ours. Everything at 30 with fairy and vanish in every wash. We have a drier, but I prefer them blowing on the line.

MrsDramaQueen · 06/08/2016 17:21

I didn't use to have a regular routine because I didn't have a tumble dryer and had to wait for nicer weather. So I used to do it 1-2 weeks. I now have a tumble dryer so my sheets get done every 2 weeks and the kids every week. I wash the mattress and pillow protectors every 6 weeks. The kids love the feeling of getting into a clean smelling bed. My son is currently potty training so I've had to wash it up to three times a week recently. My washing machine always seems to be on the go.

PickAChew · 06/08/2016 17:27

When we remember. Try to be at least every two weeks. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

Hate that stripping the beds suddenly transforms the rest of the laundry into an insurmountable mountain. Currently having one of those threatening to squish me every time we walk to the bathroom. Get around this to some extent by trying to alternate rooms, but they often end up back in sync for one reason or another.

christinelucey · 06/08/2016 17:30

I wash my sheets once a week without fail, put them on the line in the summer and tumble dryer in the winter.
