The Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate, Part I. £300 Love2Shop voucher to be won NOW CLOSED

To celebrate Fairy Non Bio’s sponsorship of the Mumsnet Talk App, we’re launching the Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate – as with all great Wink series, it's a three-parter. Part I is about how often you wash your bed sheets (as we know, always a hot topic on Mumsnet).

We all know that washing bed sheets can be total faff: there’s stripping the bed, then there’s putting the wash on (are you a warm 40C or a hot 90C type?) Then there’s hanging it out and the struggle for drying space (unless you use the dryer Blush?) After that there’s folding - and, for the super-keen, perhaps even ironing. Finally, there’s getting the darn things back on the bed.

So - how often do you wash your bed sheets? And how often do you wash your DC’s bed sheets? Do you have a specific process? Perhaps you change pillow cases weekly, but sheets and duvet covers every two weeks? How often do you change your mattress protector (Blush again)? Do you use softener?

Whatever your bed sheet-washing process, do share it with Fairy Non Bio in the thread below, and maybe even give us a live update from the Mumsnet Talk App as you're waiting for the load to finish Grin.

Everyone who posts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Every two weeks on a sunday and i do the kids ones the sunday in between :-)

I wash ours (and our son's) bed sheets and pillows
fortnightly, alternating weeks for doing this. As I don't have a dryer, I usually dry outside on the line. In Winter sheets are always dried indoors.

Using as little fuss as possible, they go straight in my ancient old Bosch washing machine (my pride and joy!), yonks' old, it's never let me down. Use 40 degree temperature, which seems fine.

Never iron sheets, only pillow cases.

kerryv · 06/08/2016 10:21

Weekly.

tracyliz · 06/08/2016 10:24

Always having the old song in my head "Monday is washing day,is everybody happy" seemed to still compel me to wash the childrens bed clothes every Monday morning and seemed to be a good start to the week.Bigger items like mattress protectors probably once a month and valances every 3 ? Blush

Trills · 06/08/2016 10:33

I don't use non-bio. Bio cleans stuff better. HTH.

OreosAreTasty · 06/08/2016 10:34

Don't have dc yet.
Wash my white sheets on 90c with a tiny (a squirt in a shot glass then made up to the top with water) amount of bleach. 60c for coloured sheets.
I dry them in the dryer. Don't iron them (what a faff) done once a week/once a fortnight dependent on season

nigelh66 · 06/08/2016 10:39

About once a year :-O Should really do it more.Think I might do it again tomorrow ! :-D

vickyors · 06/08/2016 10:42

I wash all our sheets on a Saturday morning.. Fresh for the weekend.. My three year old helps take the sheets off and we do them in one wash on 40 (love my giant washing machine!) the husb hangs out and puts washing away.. Division of labour!!

Wash all sheets and duvet covers every weekend

sandy31 · 06/08/2016 11:06

Not often enough it seems, we are bombarded with so much contradictory advice about everything from brushing our teeth to what we eat. Where did common sense go?

Dormouse1940 · 06/08/2016 11:11

I aim for every week for ours...in reality, it ends up more like fortnightly... although more frequently in this hot weather- whilst I bathe in the evening, my OH showers in the morning so he's not as fresh as I'd like by bedtime :(
I do love fresh bedding though! Hot bubble bath and straight to a bed with clean sheets is one of the simple joys of life :)
And DS's cot bedding gets flung in at the same time, wash on 40 with just normal washing powder. I don't use fabric softeners and things very often, but I love the smell on clean bedding so that's when I'd consider it (if I ever remember to get any when I do my weekly shop!)

ninamotylinski · 06/08/2016 11:19

around every 2 weeks, I think getting into clean sheets is one of lifes pleasures!

stefalfie11 · 06/08/2016 11:20

I strip everything off and wash it weekly or more often if they're particularly dirty but I have to admit that I dont iron them at all, I really can't be bothered with it and I dont think it makes much difference!

Sid98 · 06/08/2016 11:23

I wash the bed sheets every couple of months at 30c

glennamy · 06/08/2016 11:38

Just a weekly wash @ 40 degrees for all bedding... If someone is ill or have a mishap then a wash immediately @ 60/90 degrees... :)

spottypjs · 06/08/2016 11:45

Every two weeks I do mine

rachelmi · 06/08/2016 11:48

Ideally twice a week in Summer, in reality every two weeks (yuk!!)

mrshumphreyjr · 06/08/2016 11:48

change all linen every week, and twice a week in summer. Family do get hot and sweaty so its something I dont mind doing, and makes the bedrooms smell nicer :)

katyj182 · 06/08/2016 12:02

Usually about once a fortnight. I have two identical sets for us and DS so I can swap them over and not worry if I don't get them washed and dried in one day!

mollymockford · 06/08/2016 12:20

Every two weeks unless it's raining, in which case it waits for a dry day when it can be hung out on the line. Polycotton, so no need to iron.

iut044 · 06/08/2016 12:23

Every fortnight is good enough for us at he moment.

shellywkd · 06/08/2016 12:25

About once a week as my daughter is going through early puberty. She started at 9 and is now 12 and really sweats a lot so I have to wash them a lot.

Ferryfairy · 06/08/2016 12:28

Mine are changed every other Tuesday but not necessarily washed the same day, we have PV panels so only use machines when the sun is shining. I always wash bedding at 60degrees and tumble dry and fold, no ironing. My mother had Irish linen bedding which took her over an hour to iron just for her bed. She said it was worth it for the pleasure of getting into a newly changed bed! When I win the lottery I shall have my staff iron mine every day.

wingobins · 06/08/2016 12:53

Every 3-4 weeks unless my hubby happens to shit the bed!
