This month at Lidl, it’s all about Scotch Beef, with a new Lidl Surprises TV ad that transports viewers to a farm in Perthshire, Scotland, to meet beef farmer John, who has been supplying Lidl with high quality Scotch Beef since 2010.

Sceptical mum Sharna joins John for a day’s work in the fields to see for herself where Lidl’s Deluxe Scotch Beef comes from, and challenges him with her concerns around quality. She is surprised, and happy, to learn that John’s entire herd is born and bred in Scotland on a grass-based diet making them 100% Scotch Beef.

With the focus on beef this summer, Lidl are looking for your summer steak tips - how to season it, cook it and what to have with it. Do you prefer frying them or maybe you insist on a grill or BBQ? Do you have a special rub or seasoning mixture you swear by? What about sauces like Bernaise, garlic and herb or pepper? Or maybe you knock up a cracking side order of onion rings or mushrooms that you can share a recipe for? We're looking for cooking tips and recipes from you that turn a straightforward steak supper into a sensational one.

Check out their ad here:

Share your ideas below and you will be entered into a prize draw where you could win one of five £50 Lidl vouchers.

Thanks and good luck!

Oil the steak not the pan and high heat.

forkhandles4candles · 03/08/2016 15:22

Lightly cooked good quality steak and some chips with a little salt.

MiddleClassProblem · 03/08/2016 16:45

Room temperature steak. Butter to baste, season well before going in the pan. Couple of minutes each side depending on thickness and serve rare or blue. Anything over medium rare is sacrilege!

Hopezibah · 03/08/2016 17:18

I like my steak plain - not too well done. Don't turn it too often and leave to rest. With a summer salad or some new potatoes and green veg and i'm happy!

having said that there is also a sliced steak dish i make with rice and peas and sliced gherkins which the whole family enjoys and that's a nice one for summer and the steak goes further when sliced into pieces.

Don't cook steak straight from the fridge, set it on the side to warm up a bit first. Oil and season the steak. Griddle pan, very hot. Put the steak in and don't move it for 2 or 3 minutes then turn and leave alone for another 2 or 3 minutes. Turning it and turning it makes you lose track of how long each side has had.

Baked potato (or Jersey Royals if they're available) and salad with it for me.

BreakHerOffAKitKat · 03/08/2016 17:48

Fillet steak cooked from room temperature on a searing hot griddle pan. Sear both sides the reduce heat and cook until medium rare. Leave to rest for 5 mins.

I usually serve with a peppercorn sauce and always pour in the juices from the resting plate to give the sauce a little extra oomph

Mmmmm my favourite dinner with home made wedges and peas

DiggityDam · 03/08/2016 19:02

Marinate steak in a curry paste for a few hours in the fridge & then take out of the fridge 30mins before cooking to bring it to room temperature.

Put on a searing hot griddle to make the curry paste crispy then reduce heat and cook for however long required.

Serve with rock salt wedges and a curry pouring sauce.

Steak and chip the Jamie Oliver way... It's delicious.

gillyweed · 03/08/2016 19:26

My top tip is to rest it for however long you cook the steak for, no matter how well done you like it!

I get the steak out of the fridge an hour or so before i want to cook it so its up to room temp. Then season and oil both sides of the steak, hot pan, I like it medium rare so about 2-3 mins on each side only flipping once, turn out in to a warm plate and rest for 4-6 mins before serving with proper french fries (dipped in the juices!)!

Sammyislost · 03/08/2016 21:20

Oh i am rather boring and just salt and pepper it, pop it in the George Foreman until medium/well cooked and then let it sit for a few minutes.
Allowing it to sit out of the fridge for 30 minutes beforehand always seems to make a jucier meat.

finova · 03/08/2016 21:52

I love steak with a blue cheese sauce, and really thin chips! Yum!

Pantah630 · 03/08/2016 23:34

Room temperature steak, rub with a little oil, add Sal Grosso (Brazilian salt/herb mix) and pepper. Griddle pan very hot, add steak, cook 2 mins (depending on thickness) each side, wrap in foil and leave to rest for at least 5 minutes. Serve with mushrooms, chips and peas. We had Lidl Stotch beef steaks the other day, they're very good, would recommend.

jooliewoolie123 · 03/08/2016 23:51

Rub the steak with a knob of butter while it's on the frying pan- the sweetness from the butter is DELICIOUS! :)

Collymollypuff · 04/08/2016 01:16

I'm interested to hear other views on FoofFighter's dp's approach of cooking it slowly and gently. I reckon this is healthier than charring meat so that's the way I do it, too.

But everyone else is getting the pan very hot...

CMOTDibbler · 04/08/2016 01:57

I love steak with a blue cheese butter and salad, maybe some really good mash as well

Ntinyn · 04/08/2016 02:19

Always bring up to room temperature before cooking and allow to rest before serving. Served with skinny fries, something green and peppercorn sauce.

DollyBarton · 04/08/2016 12:30

I always finely slice a few garlic cloves and fry alongside the steak until crispy and sticky. It's an amazing and delicious garnish.

123julie321 · 04/08/2016 12:38

My best tip is to make a simple herb mixture, of olive oil, rosemary and thyme, and to brush it generously over the steak every few minutes to keep it tender and succulent.

Titsalinabumsquash · 04/08/2016 12:54

Steak is best when it's cooked for a minute max on each side in a very hot grill pan, pepper and garlic rubbed on first.

Nothin else!

Don't trust anyone that eats a well done steak! Wink

I have dumped a man after going for dinner and when the waiter asked how he'd like his steak cooked he replied

"well I do actually want it cooked, none of this pink inside nonsense, I like to make sure the animal is dead!"

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 04/08/2016 13:09

I use the ten minute rule...no steak needs more than ten minutes total time (cooking and resting)

1/2 minutes each side for blue/rare
2.5/3.5 mins each side for med rare/med
4 mins if you must have it well done (I am with titsalina here!!)

let it rest for the remainder of the ten minutes. (warm pan, in a warm place)

Steak MUST be room temp, pan MUST be searingly hot and as pp have said, don't poke it about once it is in there.

Personally I cba with cooking little bits of steak, I like a great big slab of cow and slice it across the grain to serve

Onions rings....slice an onion finely and separate the rings, put them into milk and leave for an hour or two, then take them out of the milk and shake them in a bag of seasoned flour with some polenta in and fry them in a couple of inches really hot oil until golden.

I also like a bearnaise type sauce, but dh prefers a creamy diane type which is easier to do by using the pan the steak was cooked in, add a little double cream, a splash of vermouth/brandy/white wine and be generous with the worcestershire sauce.

RockingDuck · 04/08/2016 13:22

take steak and 'good' frying pan - non-stick
salt and pepper and a shake of worcester sauce on steak
fry in dry hot pan
2 mins each side = rare-ish
serve with salad & chips...dh likes a fried egg on top too

Lidl Scottish steak is fab for this :-)

nemno · 04/08/2016 14:02

Bring steak to room temperature first, pat dry, heat griddle pan to searing hot, season steak, place on griddle, do not touch, turn after required time, again leave. At the end of cooking time hold on its edge to brown the fatty edge. Then place a pat of garlic butter on top and leave under foil on a warmed plate to rest. Enjoy Wine

CordeliaScott · 04/08/2016 18:19

Don't overcook it and open the kitchen door before I start otherwise the fire alarm goes off.

renee8100 · 04/08/2016 18:21

The perfect steak is all about the side finish. This is my recipe for homemade chunky chips:

  1. Cut floury potatoes into your preferred shape (the bigger, the better in my opinion!)
  2. Toss the potatoes together with 2 tbsp olive oil, some thyme leaves and finely chopped garlic gloves.
  3. Roast for approximately 40 mins, or until crispy and golden brown.

Deliiiiiiicious!

Ninja12345 · 04/08/2016 19:02

Super hot griddle pan, flip the steak every ten seconds until done (like it Blue) and then rest for at least ten mins. Yum!

ataraxia · 04/08/2016 19:41

It's steak sandwich, usually, or a simple steak with chips. none of those fancy sauces - ketchup is fine for me. Classy, I know!
