Strawberries are a staple part of a good British summer, and Lidl’s new advert (watch below) shows the journey Lidl’s Scottish strawberries take from farm to table.

At Lidl, we love our fresh British produce, and strawberries are no different. All Lidl strawberries are hand-picked and checked for prime ripeness, and the pickers aim to have them on Lidl shelves within just 48-hours for your freshness.

So with strawberries the hero of summer, Lidl want to hear about your favourite strawberry dishes, drinks and hacks. We’re searching for little twists to the classic strawberries and cream, right through to the biggest summer showstoppers. Perhaps your strawberry speciality is a refreshing drink, adding them to a salad for a picnic twist, or you have a fool-proof tip for hulling. Whatever your tip or recipe is, Lidl want to hear how you use and celebrate, the staple of summer.

Add your ideas and recipes below and you'll be entered into a prize draw to win one of five £50 Lidl vouchers. Any photos are very, very welcome – and of course, we’d love to hear what your little food critics think too!

Thanks and good luck.

Strawberry and rhubarb jam is wonderful especially as I made some yesterday. Equal quantity of strawberries and rhubarb and then the same amount of just normal sugar. Tastes lovely with scones and cream!

Strawberry smoothie here!
Strawberries, apple juice and banana, simple yet yummy!

jewels3000 · 18/07/2016 09:53

Chop up some strawberries, pour a yoghurt over then topped with a crushed biscuit such as a digestive. Perfect quick dessert.

Strawberry s'mores.

Melt a marshmallow (10 secs or so in microwave/over bbq/stove)
Sandwich in between 2 chocolate digestives (Chocolate on the inside) with a layer of chopped strawberries in between)

Easy after school snack.

Puree strawberries (with a little added sugar if you like but it's not necessary), pour into ice trays and freeze. They make great ice cubes for summery drinks.

Cailin7 · 18/07/2016 14:02

We love strawberries just as they are on their own or in a fruit salad.

Easy icecream -

Whip a can of condensed milk and a pot of double cream until thick (quantities aren't critical, maybe 400g condensed milk, 600g cream). Roughly chop strawbs and fold into cream mix. Freeze - no need to whip again as the condensed milk prevents it from crystalizing. Yum.

I think strawberries and cream cheese go together very well. I I like to toast an English muffin, spread on the cream cheese, and add sliced strawberries. It is a very nice start to the morning.

We love this dessert for the grown-ups, or a classic Eton Mess.

Berries in Rosé Wine

500ml good quality rosé wine
2 tablespoons sugar
400g punnet of strawberries
400g raspberries
creme fraiche, icing sugar and fresh mint to serve
shortbread or other delicate biscuits, optional

Method

  1. In a large bowl, stir to dissolve the sugar in the wine.
  2. Add the berries and stir to coat in the wine. Refrigerate overnight.
  3. Serve with a good dollop of creme fraiche, and sprinkle icing sugar over both berries and creme fraiche. Garnish with mint. Can also be served with biscuits.

And this breakfast is our daughters' favourite: pancakes with Greek yogurt, berries and a drizzle of syrup or honey.

We like to make strawberry flan with icecream :)

TheParentingTrials · 18/07/2016 17:55

I love using straw berries to make one of my fsvouriemail deserts. It doesn't have a name i just kind of put it together one day lol.

You need
1 x large flan case
1x box of strawberry
1x jelly (I use sugar free powderived jelly)

Step 1. Make up 1 sachet/packet of strawberry jelly

Step 2. Put the jelly in the fridge, keep checking on it and giving it a stir. Don't let it fully set but make sure it's almost set ie thick before you take it out.

Step 3. Whilst the jelly is setting, cut up strawberries into half's and neatly place them on top of your flan case.

Step 4. Once the jelly is thick enough (not fully set) pour it on the top of the flan case covering theverything strawberries. It's important to make sure jelly is almost set before doing this or yourll end up with a soggy Base .

Step 5. Once done put the whole thing in the fridge and let the jelly continue to set fully. Once done cut and eat :)

Here's a picture of one of the ones I've made.

Strawberry and almond crumble.
Mix strawberries with caster sugar, vanilla essence and ground almonds. Top with a buttery crumble with a handful of rolled oats or crushed cornflakes in. Sprinkle some flaked almonds over the top before baking and served with extra thick double cream.

jamielmdjs · 18/07/2016 19:03

We have a cuisinart ice cream maker so we'd make strawberry ice cream with strawberry sauce - double whammy of strawberry goodness.

ice cream

200g strawberries
100g caster sugar
200ml full fat milk
200ml double cream
1 vanilla pod
5 large egg yolks
1 tablespoons lemon juice

Then heat strawberries, vanilla and sugar for a sauce.

The best way to hull strawberries is to use a drinking straw - just push it through. Get the kids involved they LOVE it . Remember you need to clean out the straw intermittently

ButterflyOfFreedom · 18/07/2016 20:16

Smoothie!

Strawberries with whatever other fruit you like / have. Favourites are strawberries & bananas - core, peel, whizz, viola!

notagiraffe · 18/07/2016 20:31

My favourite is Bircher muesli

1 cup sugar free muesli
1 cup natural yoghurt or Skyr
1 cup fresh juice - apple and berries or OJ
1 small box strawberries, washed, hulled and chopped
strawberries, hulled and chopped
1 small box blueberries
Stir them all together until the juice and yoghurt are completely smooth and blended. Chill overnight if you can or eat it after its soaked for 10 mins.

I have that for breakfast almost every day in summer and use frozen berries in winter.

Havingkittens04 · 18/07/2016 21:51

Buy a massive punnet of strawberries and over the course of the week there's plenty to use with a variety of desserts and breakfasts, never gets boring and always delicious -

Mid-week desserts -
Quartered strawberries and cream
Quartered strawberries and ice cream
Sliced strawberries on top of a homemade NY cheesecake
Whole strawberry on the side of a hot choc fudge cake, with cream
Whole strawberries dipped in melted chocolate

Weekend breakfasts -
American style pancake stack with sliced strawberries between the layers with maple syrup drizzled all over and streaky bacon on the side
Sweet waffles with whole or quartered strawberries and whole blueberries on the side with maple syrup
Whole strawberries with a selection of breakfast pastries

Mmm Grin x

Another one for strawberries in dark chocolate. A great addition to cakes and ice cream etc.

mishknight · 19/07/2016 11:44

to easily hull a strawberry I push a straw (ironic, I know) through the opposite end and this pushes out the stalk and this ensures none of the flesh is wasted

MummyBtothree · 19/07/2016 14:15

Thanks everyone for the 'straw' tip to hull a strawberry....genius! Star

beckyinman · 19/07/2016 19:01

Cracked black pepper or a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Sounds disgusting but really brings out the flavour

CointreauVersial · 19/07/2016 23:28

If you have a bit of a glut of strawberries, or they are starting to get past their best, wash/hull and roughly chop them, and freeze them laid out on a tray.

Perfect for iced smoothies, with some chunks of banana and some apple juice.

ClockBusCanada · 20/07/2016 14:44

There's a massive divide on whether people like sugar on their strawberries and as with everything in life, it's always nicer to ask than assume. I accept I am probably being ridiculous and fussy but if sugar has to be used, I much prefer icing sugar which goes all nicely melty, instead of rock hard brown granulated sugar, which is too gritty for me. The first time it happened I thought sand had got on them.

Also finely chopped mint works really nicely with fresh strawberries.

ohfourfoxache · 20/07/2016 19:18

Dip in melted chocolate and leave to set. IMHO dark chocolate is best, and especially nice from the fridge/ cooled.

Drinks- well, strawberry vodka is divine! Vodka, strawberries and sugar, leave it for a few weeks and keep shaking the bottle and decant. Couldn't be easier!

marshgirl · 20/07/2016 22:20

Eton mess is my favourite way to eat strawberries.
