We’ve been asked by Sheilas' Wheels to find out what Mumsnetters want from their Car Insurance policy.

They say "we appreciate that Car insurance isn't something you think about every day, however, should you need it you want to know everything is covered."

So what would be your ideal car insurance policy? Should it include a number of complimentary car washes each year? Any extras to keep your family safe when motoring?

Whatever you’d like from your car insurance policy, Sheilas' Wheels would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Who knows, you could help shape the future of car insurance?

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks,

I agree with the points many others have made on here, but there are a few more that I would like to see.

  1. Excess should be a percentage of the claim for cheaper claims (eg. If you have a £200 excess, the excess on claims of less than £1000 should be 20%).
  2. Write-off valuation specified at the start of the year.
  3. Renewal premium for year 2 specified at the start of year 1 (subject to no claim)
  4. Increase in renewal premium due to any penalty points specified at the start of the year.
  5. No premium penalty for a no-fault driver even when insurance companies use "knock-for-knock" for THEIR administrative efficiency.

I would also like insurers to remember that insurance is a collective sharing of risk. The whole principle is that "no-claim" customers pay towards those unfortunate enough to need to claim. I find it obscene that one of two drivers, both who have never claimed and have no penalty points, who have the same car and live on the same street, can be paying 20 times as much for insurance as the other one due to age, occupation and no claims history etc.

Good customer service, especially in the upsetting event of a claim. I want to speak to someone in the UK, not a foreign call centre. I want any claims dealt with as painlessly as possible

jenniwren12 · 26/12/2015 14:50

a hassle free claim, competitive pricing and reliable staff to talk too

devito92 · 26/12/2015 14:53

An honest quote,UK based customer service and lower excess

piggyliggy2015 · 26/12/2015 15:17

Low excess, ability to manage your policy and make changes online rather than having to call a call centre and breakdown cover included as standard

tubbss · 26/12/2015 15:28

I would like the renewal to be sensible! For the past 3 years I have had to cancel the policy when the renewal comes though only to join them again as a new customer to get he best deal from the comparison sites - Hastings Im talking about YOU!

allsorts4444 · 26/12/2015 15:30

Fair price on renewals, existing customer's should not be charged more than new ones :/

Indantherene · 26/12/2015 15:32

Firstly I would like to see up front who I'm insured by. I avoid the really low quotes on the comparison websites having been bitten in the past. This year I picked M&S as a household name. Had a crash, turns out M&S is just a broker and I'm insured with a tinpot company I've never heard of.

End up having to make loads of calls with M&S saying it's down to other company and them redirecting me back to M&S.

Why do we need brokers anymore?

Agree with everyone else in wanting loyalty discounts and not having to change insurers every year.

Plus why do they make you give details of previous claims? They've got it all on record anyway.

worldgonecrazy · 26/12/2015 15:37

Good service at a fair price. And when we do need to make a claim, a decent garage that won't send the car back in a dangerous undriveable condition (I'm looking at you Direct Line!).

mrpeterhall · 26/12/2015 16:00

I just want be treated fairly.........Dutch auctions should be a thing of the past.

julieef · 26/12/2015 16:02

A better lower policy for no claims

Cybertinker · 26/12/2015 16:05

Reward for Loyalty and a fair price - I had Sheila's Wheels years ago an upon renewal even with a NCD it was not cheap - price had rocketed. I am now with my bank and have several policies and this is much cheaper. If Sheila's Wheels had rewarded Loyalty and been like for like with a NCD then I probably would have stayed with them. No such luck I am afraid.

beeelaine · 26/12/2015 16:07

Not to have to pay an Admin fee for ringing up and changing something, like i wanted to take my man off my policy (no need for him to be on it as he had own third party insurance on his own insurance) and to do that would cost me some admin fee! just for someone - just for someone to take call and tap a few details into computer - it seems a bit of a con!

lindseystuart85 · 26/12/2015 16:25

I would like an easy policy
with low excess costs
a yearly bonus if I hadn't claimed would be brilliant
And also a recovery service too incase I broke down.

joanf · 26/12/2015 16:29

Decent price
Low excess
Clear policy

swampthing1 · 26/12/2015 16:31

a good price and a courtesy car

kittykomp · 26/12/2015 16:49

good value :)

jewels1984 · 26/12/2015 17:18

reasonable prices, especially with renewals and show loyalty to existing customers. Also a simple claims process.

strawberrisc · 26/12/2015 17:38

Like any insurance I would just like to know that if I want to make a claim I can do and not every eventuality is covered by small print.

Narnianescape · 26/12/2015 17:54

Reasonable price

Narnianescape · 26/12/2015 17:56

Reasonable price

sarahbrokenshire · 26/12/2015 18:09

Low excess, low premiums and great customer service would be great

Laineyflo · 26/12/2015 18:53

Great renewal prices, easy to contact, low excess...we're pretty happy with Aviva!

dragon60 · 26/12/2015 18:56

good value, not to be 'stung' by automatic renewals - give me the same price I could get when I search and get a new quote online - don't penalise me, for being loyal

Funkyferret · 26/12/2015 19:34

We're lucky with our car insurer. We like that the process of changing vehicle is really easy, they're realistic about "add-ons", i.e. tell you what's available but don't try and push them and indeed sometimes say that it would not be of benefit to us. The call centre is easy to contact, staff are friendly and helpful and their communication is quick, clear and efficient. They're great!
