As part of their Good To Know campaign, McDonald’s have released three new videos to give a little bit more information on the ingredients they use in their products, and they’re keen to hear what Mumsnetters think. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be running threads about different McDonald’s foods.

McDonald’s say “We’ve launched our Good To Know campaign to provide our customers with more information on the quality of the ingredients we use in our products. Despite some common misconceptions, our Chicken McNuggets contain 100% chicken breast meat, fries are made from real, whole British spuds and 100% beef from whole cuts of forequarter and flank goes into a McDonald’s burger. Alongside the Good To Know website, we’re launching the three new videos you’ll see in Mumsnet threads over the next few weeks, and we’re really interested to hear your thoughts”

Please watch the 40 second video below:

Once you’ve watched the video please let us know:

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Whatever your thoughts, McDonald’s would love to hear about them.

Everyone who adds a comment will be entered in to a prize draw, where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks & good luck,

MNHQ

I'm betting if they showed shots of the barns the chickens are raised in - you'd think twice about eating their nuggets

strawberrisc · 11/12/2015 11:36

Parents who know no different than a full diet of junk food, for whatever reason, probably never will.

Parents who understand a balanced diet will give their children everything in moderation. Chicken nuggets at McDonalds may be ok - just don't load the fries with salt and only eat fast food as a treat.

At the other end of the scale are those who demonise anything that isn't organic. I doubt a commercial will change the opinion of anybody who falls into any of these three categories.

MrsMarigold · 11/12/2015 16:55

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
Positive, I'm very into food provenance and it is a major issue for me as a consumer with young children. I was already aware that McDonald's use proper meat but I thought it was a bold decision to tackle it's critics head on like that.

Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
No I already knew they were ok, but in the past I was a sceptic

-If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
Yes, I don't see why not.

Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
Yes

DingleberryFinn · 11/12/2015 19:25

My kids think McDonalds is great, mainly because of the Happy Meal toys. It's cheap food, it is what it is.

Proper chips and not horrible oily french fries and proper burgers that don't look like cowpats would make me feel better about it. I already knew the chicken nuggets were not the worst thing about McDonalds.

GetKnitted · 11/12/2015 23:56

I don't think it will go viral, people who like to eat at mcdonalds are probably not put off by jamie oliver on US TV talking to kids who don't know what food is, people who secretly like to eat at mcdonalds will never ever share this video... sorry :)

PS I secretly like to eat at mcdonalds

WinterBabyof89 · 12/12/2015 06:04

Good to clarify content of their nuggets. I've been massively put off nuggets before now having chomped on a gristly bit

I already go to McDs so hasn't changed my habbits - might now reconsider nuggets favourably as an option though.

I wouldn't go on the website because it's not that strong of an issue for me.

claza93 · 12/12/2015 07:56

The message is clear in the video. We go to Mcdonalds once in a while as a treat - the kids love it and as long as we balance it with a healthy diet at home I don't see the issue with it

WowOoo · 12/12/2015 13:35
  1. I'm not sure I trust what it says. It was pretty persuasive and positive on the whole.
  1. No, it didn't really change my perceptions. See 1.
  1. I don't ever go to McDonald's and don't think that's likely to change. I'm not vegetarian or a health freak, I just don't like the taste of anything there.

My children have been with family and friends a couple of times, but never nag me to go.

  1. I'm not interested in their website. I doubt i'd be tempted to visit it.
bettythebuilder · 12/12/2015 16:56
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

Good idea, watchable and quite funny.

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

Yes, it did really because I really had a very low opinion of chicken nuggets as reconstituted ropey bits of chicken!

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

I wouldn't visit, I have avoided MaccyDs since the 1980s for personal reasons, however Dd likes to go so sometimes Dh takes her.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

No.

Nottheshrinkingcapgrandpa · 12/12/2015 17:34

This doesn't change my perception of nuggets, nor how often I'll let my children eat them. It'll still be at motorway service stations only!

marshgirl · 12/12/2015 18:56

The video doesn't change my perception on their food. My daughter is 13 years old and loves a chicken nugget or 2 and I've never stopped her from eating anything.

Bambooshoots14 · 12/12/2015 21:25
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
Liked it, shows how the food has now changed quality over the years
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
No already knew they were chicken breast
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
Already go
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
No
KittyKat88 · 12/12/2015 22:32

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
I think they want to change their image and reinvent the brand for the next generation

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
It does challenge my views about the origins of the ingredients esp. chicken
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
I have been a few times as DDs and OH wanted to go. I think I would feel a bit more comfortable now about them going again in future.
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
I like to be informed about the brands I use, and particularly the foods that my children eat. On that basis I would have a look at the website to find out more.
melmoo · 13/12/2015 00:38

Our family and our children never go to Mcdonnalds (or their similar competitors). I personally once had a breakfast in a Mcdonnalds in Hong Kong in 1991. I thinks that's it for all of us.
Your recent health claims have all invariably been selected nonsence - yes it may be actually real chicken but what about the other 24 ingredients? One reasonable ingredient doesn't make something OK. While your Fries have 19 ingredients then you won't be a place for us.
I think it's disgusting that a company that is the elitome of processed food and bad health is claiming otherwise. To be a healthy place for us to go you need to make all the ingredients and processes behind all your products at least not unhealthy and give clarity on those ingredients and processes to the public.
Untill then no this video hasn't changed my image at all (It may have worsend my opinion of you) and no we still won't be going anwhere near your stores.

fm201069 · 13/12/2015 09:50

it didn't change my opinion at all. I like mcdonalds anyway.

CHERYLPEARSON · 13/12/2015 11:27

I like mcDonalds, my kids like mcdonalds.
I cannot stand people looking down their noses at us MaccyD lovers.

sharond101 · 13/12/2015 13:43

It doesn't actually say what's in the nuggets does it? I went to McDonalds for ice cream with my toddler the other day, first visit. Was not impressed with the cleanliness, atmosphere or anything else really. Won't return on that basis.

DinoSnores · 13/12/2015 15:25

melmoo, I was so puzzled by what you said here ("Your recent health claims have all invariably been selected nonsence - yes it may be actually real chicken but what about the other 24 ingredients? One reasonable ingredient doesn't make something OK. While your Fries have 19 ingredients then you won't be a place for us.", that I went to have a look at the McDonalds website.

Fries do not have 19 ingredients.

They are made from 3: "Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Sunflower, Rapeseed), Dextrose (predominantly added at beginning of the potato season)."

The page on fries does say that the fries are fried in the same oil as something else and gives all those ingredients which could be a source of cross-contamination, which is far more information that you'd get from any other restaurant!

DinoSnores · 13/12/2015 15:44

What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I felt the video was a little bit patronising, but it was clear that the nuggets are made of 100% chicken breast meat.

Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

Not really. I knew it already as I try to find out what things are made of before feeding them to my children and don't like to rely on rumours or misinformation (as shown by my post immediately above this one!)

If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

We are very seldom visitors and only when travelling on long journeys and want something warm as the salt content is the thing I am most concerned about. It doesn't make me want to visit more.

Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

I've looked at the nutritional information before but probably wouldn't otherwise go to the website.

PigletJohn · 13/12/2015 15:54
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
I think they're slithering over the total content of the food. They didn't say what percentage of the things is chicken breast, or mention fat, salt and sugar content (did you know McFries contain sugar?)
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
no
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
no
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
not very, but I might look to see what the fat and sugar content of their "salads" are, including the dressings.
PigletJohn · 13/12/2015 15:58

update
I just had a look at the website, and couldn't find the ingredients or nutritional values of the food AS SERVED. So I can't see the fat, sugar and salt content, or added water in the chicken.

Can someone point me at it, and tell me if the website deliberately conceals that information?

PigletJohn · 13/12/2015 16:12

found some of it now. It says a box of nuggets contains 45g of fat, 1.9g of sugar and 1.7g of salt, but it doesn't seem to say what % that is, or the total weight of the food.

I will guess that it is a high-fat product.

I see their chicken sandwich contains 16g of fat, almost exactly the same as their crispy chicken salad or a serving of fries..

PigletJohn · 13/12/2015 16:18

DinoSnores

No, the ingredients list says they contain 45% chicken.

They say that 45% is all breast.

the rest is water, fat, semolina, flour etc.

They also say it is chopped and shaped. I don't know what that means.

DinoSnores · 13/12/2015 16:25

piglet, yes, the meat in the nuggets is 100% chicken breast meat. I knew that and clearly meant that.

I think the nutritional information is pretty easy to find and allows you to 'build' a meal and then be shocked by just how much fat and sugar is in it

Flumplet · 13/12/2015 16:30

It was apparent from the video that rumours about the meat content of McNuggets were unfounded, and that they are apparently made of 100 % chicken breast. It feels a little bit like the details are being glossed over in this video.
