As part of their Good To Know campaign, McDonald’s have released three new videos to give a little bit more information on the ingredients they use in their products, and they’re keen to hear what Mumsnetters think. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be running threads about different McDonald’s foods.

McDonald’s say “We’ve launched our Good To Know campaign to provide our customers with more information on the quality of the ingredients we use in our products. Despite some common misconceptions, our Chicken McNuggets contain 100% chicken breast meat, fries are made from real, whole British spuds and 100% beef from whole cuts of forequarter and flank goes into a McDonald’s burger. Alongside the Good To Know website, we’re launching the three new videos you’ll see in Mumsnet threads over the next few weeks, and we’re really interested to hear your thoughts”

Please watch the 40 second video below:

Once you’ve watched the video please let us know:

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Whatever your thoughts, McDonald’s would love to hear about them.

Everyone who adds a comment will be entered in to a prize draw, where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks & good luck,

MNHQ

We like McDonald's as a treat. We eat nuggets... I'm glad they are not full of crap. Thanks for letting me know

I think mc Donald's need to do some old school happy meal toys again.

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
Well, it's good to know the nugget is seemingly good quality meat but what's the batter made of - how much fat, what additives? And what is the McDonald's policy on poultry husbandry?
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
No, I wouldn't say so.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
I don't think so. I've occasionally grabbed a coffee from McDonald's and it is good but we're lucky that there are other healthier, good places to eat round my way.
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
No, I don't think I'd be persuaded.

The message in the video is positive and changed my perception of Chicken McNuggets. Previously I had assumed that the product was made of processed meat products, and not 100% chicken breast. Sounds much more healthy and nutritious.

Occasionally we visit the local McDonalds, the food is tasty and filling, enjoyed by all.

Although I would be more inclined to visit McDonalds more often if they (along with many other global companies) paid their fair due of taxes to the UK, rather than using 'clever' accounting techniques to pay as little as possible.

EvaBING · 07/12/2015 14:36

Have seen the ad on TV and find it quite patronisising. You'd swear we didn't know that mc'd's was crap. Tha point is - we love mc'd's FOR BEING JUST WHAT IT IS!!! CRAP!!! GORGEOUS CRAP!

Unless you're targetting a less educated market? To promote your food as healthy? hehehehehe

Why I dropped out of my marketing degree, I'll never know ;)

izzy76 · 07/12/2015 15:16

if it is 100% chicken breast meat, that doesn't tell us what is done to that meat and doesn't tell us how that chicken was reared either but this dont bother us to much as i would never give that crap (any fast food) to my kids ever not even for a treat!

geezerbird44 · 07/12/2015 16:34

I don't mind a McDonalds every now & then but not all the time. It's a treat really. The chicken nuggets are OK, still quite high in salt. The advert hasn't changed my mind at all.

Cybertinker · 07/12/2015 19:34

It's a good advert in that it addresses the concern that has been out there for decades - I still wouldn't give my kids chicken nuggets from McDonalds - too over processed. That is just my personal opinion.

toodles60 · 07/12/2015 20:50

I love Macdonalds but have always been under the misconsception that there are all sorts of horrible things in their chicken nuggets. The video did remind me of the sort of films they show in schools. Pretty basic but the message is very clear. I think it says everything it needs to say in order to clear up the rumours about Mcnugget contents. Many people have said for a long time they were made out of what they basically cleared off the floor after all the good bits were used. As in the video, beaks, feet etclol I liked the advert, i like that they plainly and honestly state what is in each of their products and they've done it in a fun way that both adults and children alike can understand.

sweir1 · 07/12/2015 23:36

Mcnuggets rule!

ShatnersBassoon · 08/12/2015 07:21

I've never been more concerned about McDonald's chicken nuggets than any other processed, coated poultry. My children eat them and enjoy them.

It hasn't changed my perception of the nuggets or McDonald's as a brand. I've never thought they were any worse than other fast food outlets or family eating places eg chain pub grub restaurants.

I do love McDonald's veggie wrap thing, by the way. Give me that over nuggets any day Smile

compy99 · 08/12/2015 08:08

ok advert, as vegetarians it won't make much difference to us.

Princessxo · 08/12/2015 09:29

Yeh the message was obviously out there but it sounded like maybe they were trying too hard? I don't know. Just came across that way.

I do visit McDonalds but it hasn't changed my perception of the brand in anyway. I already knew they used chicken breast. I guess it's a good idea that they've stated it as fact.

I wouldn't mind visiting the website to find out more. It's what I usually do when trying to find information anyway so this wouldn't be any different.

pottymummy · 08/12/2015 16:31
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
We don't sell junk - come bring your kids
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
Not really. I like McDonalds and I have no issue with it. We go maybe once or twice a month as its a 'treat' (due to the toys) and its inexpensive for a family (although a happy really doesn't really fill them up at 8 and 6). My eldest always has nuggets so I knew they were 100% breast meat. I really like the wraps (but not the 'grilled' chicken option - what the flaming hoohas is that wet mess?!!)
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
No. I don't need to visit, but actually its good that it exists so if I did want to check I could.
Reasontobelieve · 08/12/2015 18:24

What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I think that it was helpful, as it dispels rumours and misconceptions concerning the ingredients that go into McDonalds meals.

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
To some extent, in that I have never really considered the quality of the meat that goes into McNuggets, as it is not the sort of food that I would eat. The ad has made me think and has reassured me. On the other hand, if my dd aged 14 said that she had eaten them, I would know that it was breast meat, as opposed to reformed scraps.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
I wouldn't choose to go to McDonalds, as I don't like the smell or the atmosphere and it wouldn't be a destination that we would go to as a family. I can understand why people go there, as the food is cheap and it is an easy place to visit if you have young children. My dd sometimes goes there with friends and I would never deter her - but wouldn't encourage her. I just think that there are better ways of eating.
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
Possibly
juju3 · 08/12/2015 20:46

Helped improve my perception somewhat but at the end of the day its not the healthiest of food - so should only be as a treat

Clairescottshug · 08/12/2015 21:21

I am sure it's reassuring for some, but ultimately it's a treat, it doesn't change my perception that a treat now and then is ok, it's not like I feed my children this every day or week in fact, it's just now and then so doesn't really bother me knowing what I already knew which is they donly use shyte

MAT12 · 08/12/2015 21:25

We only have mcdonalds once in a blue moon, I dont eat the food but my kids like the fries and shakes.Ive never like nuggets, mcdonalds or any other and nor do my children so the advert doesnt really affect me.

AnimalAddict · 09/12/2015 06:14

I like the video. It didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I think Mcdonalds is a great place to eat as long as it's part of a balanced diet. :)

DrSausagedog · 09/12/2015 12:59

Overall message- I liked that it was simple and basic, no unnecessary waffle or excessive facts or science.

My perceptions- actually, yes it did. Since the Jamie Oliver documentaries years ago I've had it in my mind that chicken nuggets are pure junk and assumed not made from breast meat.

Consider visiting- yes, I would actually. I haven't taken DD nearly 4 at all to McDonalds but it does seem to be healthier than I'd realised and I'll take her after swimming one day.

Website- yes I will give it a look.

lolamia91 · 10/12/2015 00:28

The video wasn't very factual.
We don't really eat McDonald's but I think it's always ok to have a treat
X

Tanfastic · 10/12/2015 06:30

I liked the video but do think it doesn't matter what you say there will still be some people or parents will think giving their child the odd McDonalds is like giving them a line of cocaine once a month WinkHmm. It's ridiculous.

I've never had a problem with my child eating at McDonalds, it's a treat we do once a month or so that he gets very excited about and nuggets are his favourite.

Stirling84 · 10/12/2015 13:08

I've always gone McDonalds over other similar outlets, because I perceive them as being more responsible and reliable than other similar places. I wouldn't ever feed my kids in a chicken hut, and I don't like Burger King.

I would never plan it as a 'real' meal - but it is a standby option for long drives or days that are going wrong (eg someone poorly). In these circumstances I am quite happy for the DC to eat there. Coffee is good; drive through is a lifesaver with sleeping DC; staff are friendly; toilets are fine. My life would be much harder without it (and I'm normally a very lentil-weaving parent!)

One of my DC is vegetarian, which caused me a problem. He is happy with the veggie wrap - but is disappointed that he can't have a happy meal. I've gone to the lengths of buying a nugget happy meal, eating the nuggets myself at the counter, and then stuffing his veggie wrap in the box!! If McDonalds could include a veggie option in the happy meal, I would go more often.

seeingdouble2 · 10/12/2015 22:01

Its nice to see that they are 'proper' chicken. I always thought they were anyway. When I do treat my child next I will know its not any thing gross in the chicken!

00100001 · 11/12/2015 10:08

They need to tell us if it's mechanically recovered chicken breast or not.

00100001 · 11/12/2015 10:12

Alos, is this choicken free-range? or mass produced?
