As part of their Good To Know campaign, McDonald’s have released three new videos to give a little bit more information on the ingredients they use in their products, and they’re keen to hear what Mumsnetters think. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be running threads about different McDonald’s foods.

McDonald’s say “We’ve launched our Good To Know campaign to provide our customers with more information on the quality of the ingredients we use in our products. Despite some common misconceptions, our Chicken McNuggets contain 100% chicken breast meat, fries are made from real, whole British spuds and 100% beef from whole cuts of forequarter and flank goes into a McDonald’s burger. Alongside the Good To Know website, we’re launching the three new videos you’ll see in Mumsnet threads over the next few weeks, and we’re really interested to hear your thoughts”

Please watch the 40 second video below:

Once you’ve watched the video please let us know:

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Whatever your thoughts, McDonald’s would love to hear about them.

Everyone who adds a comment will be entered in to a prize draw, where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks & good luck,

MNHQ

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
I didn't really like the video, it wasn't very informative to be honest. I thought it was well known they are 100% chicken breast, it is how they are processed and prepared that makes them "bad" for you. It also offers no information about the source of the chickens and their welfare. As an information video, I think it misses the mark.

Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
No it didn't.

If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
My 3 year old has a McDonalds maybe once every two/three months. That won't change. We tend to go when a friend suggests it - I personally have no strong feelings about their food but prefer other options for myself.

Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
No, I don't feel strongly enough about it to find out more.

piggyliggy2015 · 06/12/2015 18:17

It is a good message, as I have heard many rumours about what goes into Mcdonalds chicken nuggets, to the point where I actually avoid them. This advert will help change peoples perception of them. I would certainly consider eating them now that I have reassurance on what is in them. I would probably visit the good to know website as I would like to see what their other products like their beef burgers are made of.

Ganne1 · 06/12/2015 18:30
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video? It's all a bit heavy-handed and obvious, with no attempt at subtlety, but it does get the message across
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how? No, as I suspected it all along.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children? No more than before.
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information? Not at the moment.
jt75 · 06/12/2015 18:31

I don't go there anyway.

devito92 · 06/12/2015 18:31

Not convinced it's a healthy meal no matter what a food scientist tells me. I prefer home cooked everytime.

TracyKNixon · 06/12/2015 18:32

A clever advert though I must admit, I never take my kids to MacDonalds and I only make my own chicken nuggets using chicken and breadcrumbs.

Lauzipop1 · 06/12/2015 18:36

Definitely reassures me. I was always pretty sure that chicken nuggets were full of nastiness so to see that it is definitely chicken breast I'm reassured that the odd treat is ok for the kiddies.

hdh747 · 06/12/2015 18:37

I must admit to considering McDonalds food as junk food and being rather dubious about the provenance of the food. I'm not sure the ad convinces me the food is healthy but it does de-demonise it a bit.

Roraima · 06/12/2015 18:40

Unfortunately I find McD really revolting. I really cannot say what it is, I guess I #ve been vegetarian for 45 years and read a lot about the mass production of food corporations. But above all the nuggets, they don't look like food but something made out of plasticine. But also the smell is so off putting...Definitely not a fan of that kind of food no matter how hard they try.

edoody · 06/12/2015 18:42

Everyone knows all they need to to know about McDonald's, will never be a healthy choice and always considered a treat. We only visit 2 or 3 times a year and no advert would make me re-consider

ThemisA · 06/12/2015 18:42

I'm not a fan of using smiling food technicians who are employed by the company advertising the product. I would want to know how the chickens were kept, what they were fed on and how they were killed. It didn't change my impression of McDonald or my frequency of going there. I wouldn't be likely to visit their website because I would feel they would be putting a positive spin on things and it is what they don't tell me that I'm interested in. I sound a right old misery!!

glennamy · 06/12/2015 18:43

Never believed the scare stories regarding food anyway but this is a good attempt with humour at trying to educate people. Like everything in life, a little bit of everything is not a problem, just balance things out!

LeeR1985 · 06/12/2015 18:43

I imagine a lot of people still wont believe it and will think its made of 'pink slime' but its a good advert and it'll assure some of the wary people that its safe to eat :)

Cailin7 · 06/12/2015 18:56

I have no opinion of the video, I do not eat at McDonalds or fast foods

MAForster · 06/12/2015 18:59

The overall message was patronising in its presentation. It did not change my perception of Chicken McNuggets - I assumed a company with the resources and reputation of McDonald's would be using quality food. However, I prefer other types of fast food if I am eating in a hurry so I am unlikely to visit McDonald's more. I am not particularly interested in the website

finleypop · 06/12/2015 19:01
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video? It made me think afresh about visiting McDonalds
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how? Yes, I really thought that McDonalds nuggets were made from poor meat
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children? Possibly
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information? I may do
tiameg · 06/12/2015 19:05

All things in moderation... if you like this stuff and have it once in a blue moon - fine. I personally dont and what worries me is, whever you go in the world (e.g McDonalds India do asian food) they add 'that special something' that still makes it taste like Madonalds... I just cant belive that the 'speacial something' that they add can be good for you. Did anyone see the vid of the guy that lived on Mcdonalds for a month? I rest my case.

lornies79 · 06/12/2015 19:08

I liked the advert, it shows how mums worry about what their children are eating.
It didn't change my perception of chicken mcnuggets as I already knew they were made of proper chicken and no rubbish goes in them.
I already go to mcdonald's with the children for a treat.
I will visit the good to know website to get more info on the other foods from mcdonald's.

maryandbuzz1 · 06/12/2015 19:12

I enjoyed watching the video and was reassured about the chicken nuggets served at McDonalds. Although I enjoy the food served there I am put off by the atmosphere and the feeling of being rushed through a meal and the noise!

alsproject · 06/12/2015 19:13

It hasn't change my opinion about McDonalds food as I already know it is made from great produce from farms

shaunying · 06/12/2015 19:18

I thought the video was ok, didn't really give me any new information about McNuggets, but since I love them and have them every time I have McDonalds it didn't improve or worsen my opinion of them.

KAKADU2001 · 06/12/2015 19:44

Being a Vegan for over 35 years I have never eaten at MacDonald's. They can put out as many vidoes they like about how good and healthy their food is but at the end of the day it's down to individuals choices as to what and where they eat.

gazzalw · 06/12/2015 19:50

Quite liked the video but agree that I already knew this about McNuggets.

Seem to eat less in McDonalds than we used to, but possibly because the DCs are growing up and consider a more expensive meal to be a treat, when once upon a time a Happy Meal would have sufficed.

honeyb11 · 06/12/2015 19:55
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
I understand what McDonald's are tryingto do but the negative press you hear still puts me off.
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
No
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
No - I dislike McDonald's and would not encourage my children to visit
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
No

I like the idea and I like that they are addressing what a lot of people think about their chicken nuggets. I think because they are quite cheap and its fast food that people assume it must be not good quality. And to be honest it can't be great quality and somehow they make them sooooo unhealthy as well. When im sure chicken nuggets don't have to be that unhealthy. Did it change my perceptions? Not entirely, because they are still very cheap so I wonder what sort of chickens they are using? Also again, can they make them any healthier? I don't really go to McDonalds cept maybe once a year. I wouldnt go any more often because it so bad for you, just looking at the calorie content of their meals puts me off (even though they taste good). As for the website I can't be bothered to go as I'm not that interested. I think the only people who might visit it are the people that probably only take their kids there a few times a year for a special treat and even after looking on the website I doubt they will start going regularly.
