As part of their Good To Know campaign, McDonald’s have released three new videos to give a little bit more information on the ingredients they use in their products, and they’re keen to hear what Mumsnetters think. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be running threads about different McDonald’s foods.

McDonald’s say “We’ve launched our Good To Know campaign to provide our customers with more information on the quality of the ingredients we use in our products. Despite some common misconceptions, our Chicken McNuggets contain 100% chicken breast meat, fries are made from real, whole British spuds and 100% beef from whole cuts of forequarter and flank goes into a McDonald’s burger. Alongside the Good To Know website, we’re launching the three new videos you’ll see in Mumsnet threads over the next few weeks, and we’re really interested to hear your thoughts”

Please watch the 40 second video below:

Once you’ve watched the video please let us know:

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Whatever your thoughts, McDonald’s would love to hear about them.

Everyone who adds a comment will be entered in to a prize draw, where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks & good luck,

I think that the overall message of the video is very clear, that McDonalds only use 100% breast meat in their McNuggets.

We already go to McDonalds.

No I don't really hang out on company websites.

No because I always knew that McNuggets were made from breast meat.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/12/2015 13:33
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

The message was informative and useful - especially as not all chicken nuggets are made of 100% breast meat (as far as I am aware). This does differentiate McDs from other companies selling chicken nuggets.

However, I did think the video was interesting for what it left out - it did not say catagorically that McNuggets are cut from whole chicken breast - not minced, reformed breast meat.

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

No, it didn't change my perceptions of McNuggets.

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

Not applicable to me - I do already visit McDonalds.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

I am unlikely to visit this website - mainly because some of the other 'Good To Know' adverts have annoyed me so much - in particular the one suggesting people actually believe that chips can be made in a factory and have nothing to do with actual potato - and the multicoloured cow.

By all means tell people - 'our chips are cut from whole potatoes' or 'our burgers are made from minced steak from British cows', or 'our chicken nuggets are cut from whole breast meat' - but please don't suggest that people are such idiots that they think burgers come from multicoloured, spotty cows!

Whatdoidohelp · 03/12/2015 14:51

I have a baby and his father has already said he will go to McDonald's only if there is no other option ie a birthday party etc. I disagree. I think it can be enjoyed in moderation. Maybe once every 3-4 months as a treat.

I believe the nuggets are 100%breast meat as in there are no other chicken bits but what else is in them. The divert doesn't tell us. I would expect water, salt, preservatives etc.

worldgonecrazy · 03/12/2015 15:25
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

Usual McDonalds marketing messages. Nothing new.

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

Not really.

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

Not a current customer, and still no more likely to become one.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Not really.

Guess I'm not going to win any vouchers!

MegBusset · 03/12/2015 15:52

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
Pretty meaningless tbh; very simplistic and where are the actual facts, please? I would be more interested to know if it's reformed meat, free range, etc.

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
No, not really. McDonald's isn't and has never been my idea of a healthy meal. But every once in a while it's fine (for the kids - I'm veggie and think their veggie burger and wrap are vile - Burger King bean burger is much nicer)
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
See above - already do and will continue to every so often but not regularly.
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
Not if it's as simplistic as this!
VaseandCandle · 03/12/2015 16:22

The message I got was 'macdonalds isn't as bad as you think'. The ad was ok.

I'm sure I've heard it before that nuggets were 100% chicken. So did not change my perception.

I don't eat at macdonalds, but if I found myself there I would choose the nuggets, but not because of the video.

purplepandas · 03/12/2015 19:53

The ad was okay. Informative if you did not already know about the nuggets. I did though. I also found it a bit patronising. I am also happy to take my DC there as a treat and they enjoy the nuggets. I don't mind although am veggie myself so would not be tempted personally. I don't think that my opinion of McDonalds has changed as a result of viewing the clip.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/12/2015 21:08

What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I thought it was really patronising. This is mumsnet - home of the legendary chicken-stretcher who uses every scrap of meat on a chicken over several meals, boils the carcass for stock and uses the giblets for ... something delicious Confused IMO it's a total waste to take good chicken breast meat, mush it up with a load of water and added stuff, form it into little lumps, generously coat it in carbs and then deep fry it. By that point it's junk food. There's nothing wrong with junk food occasionally but please don't try to pretend it's anything it's not.

I see you use 100% breast meat across your range. What happens to the rest of the chicken? I hope it isn't wasted. I don't suppose you know. You probably just buy the chicken breast and outsource the problem of what to do with the rest of the bird.

I'm not sure why we should be impressed by a 'food tech teacher and mum' telling us what she thinks a chicken nugget looks like inside. I get the impression you think women are a bit thick. Actual nutritional information and ingredients would be more useful for 'Sarah' or anybody else who wants to make decisions on the basis of nutrition:

Chicken McNuggets :

EITHER:
Chicken Breast Meat (45%), Water, Vegetable Oil (Sunflower, Rapeseed), Fortified WHEAT Flour (WHEAT Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Maize Flour, Modified Starch, WHEAT Semolina, Starch, Potassium Chloride, WHEAT Gluten, Breadcrumb (WHEAT Flour, Salt), Whey Powder (from MILK), Raising Agents (Disodium Diphosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Flavouring, Salt, Spices (contains CELERY), Dextrose (from WHEAT).

OR:
Chicken Breast Meat (45%), Water, WHEAT Flour (Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamine), Maize Flour, Vegetable Oils (Sunflower, Rapeseed), Starches, WHEAT Semolina, Modified Starch, Breadcrumb (contains WHEAT), Dried Glucose Syrup, WHEAT Gluten, Natural Flavourings, Flavour Enhancer (Potassium Chloride), Raising Agents (Disodium Diphosphate, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate), Salt, Spices (Pepper, CELERY), Dextrose.

Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

No it didn't. I never thought it was that important precisely which part of the chicken was used. If I was making them at home I'd use carcass scraps but no offal. I'd prefer them without all the added water and potassium chloride though (seriously, how is there more potassium chloride than breadcrumbs in your nuggets?)

If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

No, because 'all sorts of chickeny bits' is a straw man. The real issues are environmental degradation, animal welfare, the de-skilling of jobs, low wages, employee rights, advertising tactics, healthy diet claims ...

It does appear that you have done a few things to clean up your act in recent years in some areas, at least in the UK, in response to public pressure. You are a global company though and it is clear you are no better than you need to be for any local market. This was only a couple of months ago.

Mostly though, I won't eat at McDonalds because of how you treated Helen Steel and David Morris a decade ago. I don't give my dinner money to bullies.

Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

I had a quick look. Not really interested in shiney dumbed-down videos. Would you be interested in watching about the McLibel trial? It's very good. Even if you're not that interested in McDonalds it's a good video on:

  • the longest running case in UK history
  • the chilling effect of UK libel laws
  • how 'free speech' doesn't really exist in the UK
  • why we need the European Court of Human Rights
  • Kier Starmer being a thoroughly good egg
BeeMyBaby · 03/12/2015 21:57
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

Good but my issue was never with the type of meat but rather the way it was cooked (salt, fried).

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

It's given me a craving for them do might have to get some on a lunch break...

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

We already occasionally visit as the children like the fish and soft play.

Pico2 · 04/12/2015 09:48
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I knew that they were made of 100% breast meat, but a food tech teacher looking at them and tasting them doesn't verify that in any way. I'd like to know what else goes into them as they clearly aren't just cut out of the chicken breast. I'd also like to know about the chicken's welfare.

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

No - this is the same message as before.

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

Already a customer.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Only if the information has changed. The message has been consistent for many years.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 04/12/2015 12:36
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
It didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know, plus it came across as a little patronising
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
Not really
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
I don't visit McDonalds and this video hasn't changed my views on it
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
Not particularly
anonooo · 04/12/2015 17:43

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
Did not say much. Some fake woman peering at chicken and telling us it is chicken does not reveal much about quality, provenance, nutrition etc.

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
No - well maybe a little. It did not quite look like the pink foam of chick brains that my DD tells me it is made of.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
No - I am vegetarian and it would not make a for a great family meal. Also itis not just about meat or not, it is about quality, atmosphere, setting and whether I want to shovel money towards a vast megacorp. I don't.
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
i don't think so - but if the DC demand McD's which they might one day then I would.

The advert panders to so many stereotypes that it set my teeth on edge. It is Mum who decides what her child eats. The "teacher" has glasses and sensible clothes, the "mum" looks wholesome and caring. Where is Dad? Why two very similar (same actress?) looking blonde women? Is being blonde an image of goodness?

I actually showed this advert to a class of 12 year olds (coincidence - we are studying advertising) and they too saw the fairly blatant nature of the advert.

Surely you can sell chicken (.which, BTW is lovely) without all the glossy, stereotypical advertising crap.

(Think I have just blown my chances of the cash but really fancy a McD meal now so have been punished by my late night hunger).

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 05/12/2015 07:10

I'm not a massive fan of McDonald's, but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as some people would have you believe. It's fine as an occasional treat.
We quite like the chicken nuggets. They're pretty tasty as far as chicken nuggets go. I don't think being 100% breast meat is as important as the welfare of the chickens - nothing wrong with a bit of thigh meat. I'd rather my family ate free range, better welfare meat.
The advert is ok.
I just wish that the chips in happy meals were served without the added salt unless you request salt, rather than having to ask for them without salt.

ImNotAFlower · 05/12/2015 07:54
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

The video was good, it poked fun at the age old believe that McDonalds is terrible food but also was informative and clear in its message that nuggets are 100% chicken breast.

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

No I knew that they were made of 100% breast now having used the website to check before taking our 4 year old.

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

We haven't been for a while as last time we went service was bad an food not great.
Having said that we all love McDonalds the last experience just put us off a bit. Also now have a 1 year old who I feel is a little young to eat there yet.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information

I have used the website before and would again.

Silverstones · 05/12/2015 11:07

My concerns about McDonalds aren't the quality of the food, but about the low paid workers preparing and serving it.

I've been shocked and distressed to hear about the low pay for their workers in the USA - one mum who was interviewed on The Food Programme had no hope of affording to buy her child chicken McNuggets, because she was on a minimum wage, zero hours contract in New York.

Sorry, McD's, but you did ask!

hermancakedestroyer · 05/12/2015 13:17
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

We as a family enjoy a mcdonalds as an occasional treat. Id do however think of all the bad press that mcdonalds gets in terms of ingredients of their food. I think that getting the message out there that the food is healthier than its reputation can only be a good thing.

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

I personally enjoy chicken mcnuggets but have their bad reputation in my head as I'm eating them. More of this information needs to be out there to change the general public's perception.

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

N/A

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
Yes I would and will do. I like to know what my family and I are actually eating.
BananaDaiquiri · 05/12/2015 17:21
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

Presented the message about McNuggets in a lighthearted way

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?

No, already knew they were 100% breast (think you have had some other ads on TV about that before?)

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

n/a. I love McDonald's. kids get to go occasionally.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Not really. But some people might, I have a friend for example who absolutely believes that McD Milkshakes contain glass!

EasterRobin · 05/12/2015 20:11
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
It got the message across clearly, so it does what it's meant to. It'll be very annoying if I have to watch it too often though.
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
Yes, I thought they had more unpleasant chicken parts in. I would be a bit more comfortable having my child eat them now, but they still seem pretty unhealthy.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
I used to visit often pre-child. I miss it. If there was a low salt meal I could feed my child (who is about 1) that I regarded as nutritious, I would go a lot more often. Oh I miss those burgers!
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
No, I don't expect it will be more interesting than the assorted entertainment I browse on the Internet, so I probably won't bother. Sorry. Perhaps if there was an incentive I'd visit the site.

My children and I do visit Mcdonalds say once a month as a treat and also with their grandparents too. They tend to like the idea of the free toy and colouring in pages more than the actual food it's self. I don't mind paying the small price if they get the toy, have a little colouring in, eat a few fries and have a drink of water, milk or orange juice.

Video was a bit fun and not enough facts, would have been better in my opinion if you showed the chickens being kept, how they live, what they eat. Also the nuggets being made, maybe children and adults making them too. Video did not change my opinion of Mcdonalds, no. The nugget batter is a bit sickly for myself and my children tend to take it off or don't eat many of them.

I havealready visited Mcdonalds website with my children

CMOTDibbler · 06/12/2015 09:31
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
It continues their messaging about McD being 'real food'. It feels a bit patronising to me, but then I've heard people spouting all kinds of rubbish about their food, so maybe thats the approach needed.
  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
No
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
N/A - we visit occasionally, only thing that would get us there more would be if there was more of a GF choice
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
I may visit out of interest
MistressoftheYoniverse · 06/12/2015 12:05

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
it was o.k tiny bit patronising, but gives basic information about the product

Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all?

Nope, I cant stand chicken nuggets as a concept my children on the other hand love them especially DD2. I'm always perplexed by the fact that perfectly good chicken breast is minced up into gloop covered in breadcrumbs and fried within an inch of it's life why not use real chunks of actual breast?

If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

I did visit Maccy Ds for many many years enjoying big macs a plenty but when I stopped smoking I got my taste buds back and no longer liked the taste or smell of McDonald's. My girls are now old enough to visit McDonald's on there own which they do regularly it's a teenage hang-out where I live. If we are out shopping I may take them as a treat. I would never visit a restaurant to eat anymore.

Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Probably not.

MakeTeaNotWar · 06/12/2015 12:19

What did you think of the overall message in the video?

Light hearted in tone, aimed about right with a fun, interesting message. Clever

  • Did it change your perceptions of Chicken McNuggets at all? If so, how?
Nope DH is a butcher so I know that these are still full of crap despite the claims.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
Never
