Ahead of the festive season the Lidl team at #SchoolofChristmas would love to hear your top tips for tipples at Christmas (either on the day, at a party or for friend/ relations visits etc).

VDd28

Do you make a mean cocktail? Get the advocat out or create fun mocktails for the drivers? How about special twists on coffees or a warming hot chocolate after a long walk with family?

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where 5 Mumsnetters will each win a £50 Lidl voucher.

thanks and good luck

Love a Baileys and ice at Christmas. Always on my Christmas list for Santa. [santa]

robyn297 · 30/11/2015 01:48

don't over cater, its easily done, we had a few bottles of advocaat hang around for months until I just couldn't stand the sight of them anymore!

snare · 30/11/2015 06:13

we love hot chocolate :)

skyeskyeskye · 30/11/2015 10:07

me and mum always have Bucks Fizz on Christmas morning while we get everything ready. Usually use Cava and orange juice, but this year are thinking about Prosecco with orange juice. Then more Prosecco with lunch. Other than that, we dont drink a huge amount at Christmas.

Store drinks and mixers outdoors - they'll be perfectly chilled and it'll save room in the fridge. Also, provide a decent selection of drinks for the non drinkers too as quite often non-drinkers are overlooked for fancy drinks, and end up with boring lemonade or cola.

It's got to be Baileys and milk at Christmas

feeona123 · 30/11/2015 12:17

Always have a bottle of champers in the fridge!

jamielmdjs · 30/11/2015 12:35

Fruity is your friend. With so many carbs, stodge and thick flavours in the main meal - fruity and light with fizz helps cut through it all.

Schloer for the kids, bucks fizz for us

kittykomp · 30/11/2015 13:03

champagne, orange and lime

vixxx666 · 30/11/2015 13:56

a nice bottle of rose wine, chilled :)
for the kids, hot chocolate with different flavoured candy canes to stir it!

piggypoo · 30/11/2015 15:07

A couple of squares of chocolate melted in the microwave, and I stir in some cream, then combine with vodka for a lovely chocolatey drink!

My family favourite to make is 'The Grinch Tequila' Grin all it is really is the following:

1/2 oz of tequila
1/2 oz of absinthe
1/2 oz of Mountain Dew

It's yummy!

JakeBallardswife · 30/11/2015 16:14

I love gin and tonic with gorgeous Fever tree tonic. All milled wine with lots of fruit or a decent hot chocolate and marshmallows.

linheiner · 30/11/2015 19:33

Hot Mulled wine is lovely and so festive - cheap red wine, cinnamon sticks, cloves and allspice, slices of orange - you could add a slug of brandy too to make it extra festive!

tishist · 30/11/2015 20:10

We make our own Irish Cream - tastier and cheaper than shop bought!

strewthie71 · 30/11/2015 20:23

The classic Blob. Australian White Wine, Hot Water Sugar and Lemon.

itsali · 01/12/2015 00:00

Have all the regular drinks but also have fun with it. Making unusual cocktails (from a book) and getting guests to guess what's in them is entertaining. Oh, and you can never have enough ice too.

ThomasRichard · 01/12/2015 14:34

A very simple one: ice, lemonade and a shot of cranberry syrup, finished off with a slice of lime. Yum.

SomewhereOverTheReindeer · 02/12/2015 07:34

Definitely Baileys. And snowballs. For more morning/child-friendly drinks mixing Cadburys highlights white chocolate powder with that weird nescafe cremation coffee makes lovely white chocolate mocha. Or just good old cadbury's hot chocolate. Made with whole milk and sometimes with a scoop of lovely vanilla ice cream melting in it...

Prosecco with Christmas Pudding vodka! A hairy bikers recipe for the vodka but it comes out as this deliciously thick syrup, the perfect base for a very Christmassy cocktail. It smells divine:

300g/10½oz mixed dried fruit (sultanas, currants, raisins)
75g/3oz caster sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
2 tsp ground mixed spice
6 cloves
½ whole nutmeg, finely grated
1 orange, zest only, finely grated
1 unwaxed lemon, zest only, finely grated
750ml/1 pint 5fl oz bottle good quality vodka
Preparation method
Mix the dried fruit with the sugar, cinnamon sticks, mixed spice, cloves, grated nutmeg and citrus zest in a large bowl.
Pour over the vodka, and cover tightly with cling film.
Place in the fridge and leave for 3 days, stirring once each day.
Line a sieve with a double layer of fine muslin and place over a large, clean jug.
Pour the dried fruit and vodka mixture into the sieve and allow to drip through into the jug.
Pour into a sterilized bottle.
