Ahead of the festive season the Lidl team at #SchoolofChristmas would love to hear your top tips for tipples at Christmas (either on the day, at a party or for friend/ relations visits etc).

VDd28

Do you make a mean cocktail? Get the advocat out or create fun mocktails for the drivers? How about special twists on coffees or a warming hot chocolate after a long walk with family?

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where 5 Mumsnetters will each win a £50 Lidl voucher.

thanks and good luck

We always end up with masses of amaretto.
ll our cocktails have it in now.
I especially like amaretto with crushed cherries and raspberry pink lemonade...it is unbelievably sweet and I love it!!

mwatmough · 20/11/2015 09:06

we like to have mulled wine

mumsnit · 20/11/2015 09:11

Proper mulled wine is Christmas for me! I make it with oranges studded with cloves and a bag of cinnamon sticks and spices. Just the perfect winter warmer along with a mince pie Wine

CHERYLPEARSON · 20/11/2015 13:34

kids christmas parties should be magical, with lots of sparkles & twinkles!!
my children love making their own party hats/crowns ~ perhaps a good idea would be to have a small crafting table to let kids do their own hats

DingleberryFinn · 20/11/2015 14:57

Baileys!

Hopezibah · 20/11/2015 17:24

Orange juice, cranberry juice and ginger beer in equal parts make a great fun pink fizzy drink that everyone seems to love!

Make your own hot chocolate sticks to melt into hot milk.

We've discovered a new liquor called white Swan which is awesome at christmas.

Use any leftover liquors to make your own filled chocolates - takes a bit of effort but make a lovely gift or treat for yourself (mix the flavoured liquor with double cream and melted chocolate as a filling - then make chocolate 'shells' for them using an ice cube tray filled with melted choc then emptied out to leave the outer bit to set. Fill with the liquor filling, cover with more melted chocolate and leave to set.

Mulled cider is a good alternative to mulled wine, and can be more economical.
I also like Winter Pimms and warmed apple juice for something a bit different.

For children, I put edible glitter or stars in their glasses, or the hibiscus flowers in syrup.

cookiedough94 · 20/11/2015 18:50

I make Christmas milkshakes! The children have oreo, strawberry, chocolate or banana (if need to be I add food colouring to make them more of a festive colour) whilst the adults have Baileys 'hot chocolate' cocktails finished with whipped cream. The kids love getting involved in making theirs and decorate them with whipped cream, sprinkles, flakes etc and I get Christmas themed straws.

maureen3733 · 20/11/2015 18:51

i put a nicely chilled prosecco or champagne with a dash of cranberry

Kangakate · 20/11/2015 19:50

I make some special flavoured alcohol on the run up to xmas, such as pouring Vodka from Lidl's over a few cubes of Turkish Delight, leave for a month, chuck in a fancy bottle and you have turkish delight vodka, I line up the bottles along with some mixers and non-alcoholic drinks

aftereight · 21/11/2015 08:40

This year's plan is for hot mulled cider, served with sticky ginger cake squares on the side.

chrisfc99 · 21/11/2015 09:43

We buy a Christmas bottle of port and a bottle of sherry. These aren't opened until Christmas Eve. Parents bring round a bottle of wine and a bottle of champagne for Christmas lunch. We make a special non-alcholic Christmas punch (Cranberry juice, orange juice, lemonade) for those who are too young to drink,

CordeliaScott · 21/11/2015 10:04

My signature cocktail is a double gin, juice of two limes and a splash if bitters over ice.

Also works well as a hangover cure Wink

EverybodyHatesATourist · 21/11/2015 10:11

Hot chocolate with a splash of liqueur or flavoured syrup
Warm apple juice served with a cinnamon stick
Hot Vimto (fab if you're full of cold)

StickChildNumberTwo · 21/11/2015 12:19

Mulled wine and mulled apple juice are favourites here.

MissChrisOfficial · 21/11/2015 12:46

We have festive shaped ice for drinks. They are so cute. We add a candy cane into our hot chocolate that is also topped with cream, marshmallows and red / green sprinkles and then for us adults we love a nice Baileys Milkshake topped with cream and crumbled cookie.

Marg2k8 · 21/11/2015 17:25

Baileys is my Christmas treat.

Dreamiesrcatopium · 21/11/2015 18:53

Champagne or bucks fizz with the bacon butties Christmas day morning as presents are opened.

Mulled cider Christmas eve when everything is done and dusted and all you have to do is get into new pjs and relax by the fire with a mince pie.

Baileys and port only ever come out at Christmas usually after the dinner once everyone is sitting round chatting. Or with a cheese board boxing day.

With Christmas dinner itself always prosecco/champagne to toast another year! Something fizzy like schloer or elderflower cordial and soda water for the little ones.

We spend a bit more on nicer wines than usual at Christmas too.

Frozen cocktails go down well for the teens (and their AuntieGrin)

WhyIRayLiotta · 21/11/2015 19:33

I love adding some fruit coulis to champagne, with berries in the glass it's so festive.

Also I make mojhitos, crushed ice, mint, lime and lots of rum Grin and serve them in chunky tumblers with a holly sprig.

Love Buck's Fizz on Christmas morning!

DrSausagedog · 21/11/2015 19:44

I love hot chocolate with a generous shot of Baileys for a treat, mmm.

Newquay · 21/11/2015 20:13

Pisco sour to salute South American roots: pisco, whisked egg white, lemon juice and crushed ice. 2 of them and you can't feel your face! After that it's lime and soda to recover.

prettybird · 21/11/2015 23:08

I've made some plum gin (with Lidl gin) that I am looking forward to enjoying over Christmas (Victoria plums from the garden)

We also enjoy "Madison Mulled Wine" - equal parts of red wine and cider heated with some cinnamon sticks and an apple studded with a couple of cloves that had been pre-baked. Not as heavy as "standard" mulled wine and therefore dangerously drinkable WinkWineXmas Grin Cant remember if there's some sugar in it too - think that can be added to taste if necessary.

Advocaat and cola, half and half. Put the advocaat in first, into a tall glass, add the coke carefully as it fizzes up. Once it's settled down, give it a good stir.
It turns the most peculiar shade of greeny yellow, but it tastes like milk shake, slides down like silk, and hits you when you stand up Grin
It is delicious, and own brand Advocaat is perfect (as well as less than half the price of the posh Warnicks stuff!)

IfItIsntOkItIsntTheEnd · 22/11/2015 15:22

Mulled wine - with mulled spiced apple juice for a non alcohol option

strawberrisc · 22/11/2015 15:50

Keep it simple, keep it real. One word... Snowball!
