Ahead of the festive season the Lidl team at #SchoolofChristmas would love to hear your top tips for tipples at Christmas (either on the day, at a party or for friend/ relations visits etc).

VDd28

Do you make a mean cocktail? Get the advocat out or create fun mocktails for the drivers? How about special twists on coffees or a warming hot chocolate after a long walk with family?

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where 5 Mumsnetters will each win a £50 Lidl voucher.

thanks and good luck

coffee and a dash of whisky. Just to keep the energy up all day :)

HideHide · 22/11/2015 16:24

Bubbles. Always bubbles (hic)

LovelyFriend · 22/11/2015 18:13

3pepper and cardamom flavoured gin, with pomegranate juice and tonic. Serve over ice and sprinkled with pomegranate jewels seeds.

The best of tips is to have small nips!

Too many Christmases are spoiled by having too much alcohol.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 22/11/2015 22:00

I make spiced mulled cider: Cider, apple juice, slug of brandy, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, ginger (just a little) and an earl grey tea bag warmed gently on the hob with cut up slices of oranges and lemons and some extra bits of grated peel.

Christmas morning is Buck's Fizz or just the fix bit with some prosecco.

I think this year I will try a snowball. They sound fun and easier than a mojito which I am rather partial to but find a faff to make.

My absolute favourite thing is to drink a big glass of a gutsy red wine while listening to Carols from Kings on Christmas Eve and wrapping the presents just before bed. It would be just before Midnight Mass but I'm a heathen these days and think going along just for entertainment is a bit off.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 22/11/2015 22:03

The mulled cider is for parties/carol singers.

And fizz not fix.

lhlee62 · 22/11/2015 23:42

I don't really drink so I just get cans of lager or cider and soft drinks, if people want harder stuff they can bring it themselves. I do make a nice vodka jelly though- a throwback from when I was a student

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 23/11/2015 09:29

I like prosecco with either gingerbread syrup or creme de peche. Or hot chocolate laced with Cointreau or again with gingerbread syrup. And a gingerbread cookie alongside....

pixelwife · 23/11/2015 22:19

A simple irish coffee is always lovely at Christmastime!

dnevers · 23/11/2015 22:43

A simple vodka, lemonade and lime for me (lots of lime)

justjodie92 · 23/11/2015 22:50

I like the simple drink of lime and lemonade. It's so refreshing, cheap, ad you can drink as much as you'd like without feeling hungover the next day xxx

CalmYoBadSelf · 23/11/2015 22:55

When we have parties we usually do mulled wine and I put out lots of different mixers to be topped up with Prosecco or, for children or non-drinkers, with lemonade or soft drink. These would be:
Cointreau and cranberry juice
Gin and elderflower cordial
Ginger liqueur
Limoncello
Orange juice

Last year I made Christmas Pudding Brandy which made a delicious addition for topping up with fizz

lindsaysss · 24/11/2015 11:24

I make mulled wine cocktails with a Cointreau & red wine base.

To boiling water i add star anise, cinnamon, cloves, light muscovado sugar, juice of lemon and juice of clementines. I slowly bring to the boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar.

I Simmer for 2 mins, then pour into a large jug and leave to cool. When cooled i add Cointreau & red wine and serve over ice.

Shiraznowplease · 24/11/2015 12:25

It has to be original baileys and Tia Maria, so creamy and warming and for me Xmas in a glass

Ren1974 · 24/11/2015 19:09

We have recently discovered Lidls Prosecco which is lovely so we are planning to have a bottle with our family Christmas lunch.

The kiddies will be having lemonade with a dash of cherries and berries squash for colour and flavour!

Aethelfleda · 24/11/2015 19:10

Bailey's , Amaretto and Creme de cacao. Sometimes with a splosh of syrup de menthe, over ice. Unbelievably lush with a mince pie!
(And lidl's own Baileys-a-like works just as well...)

ha2el · 24/11/2015 19:14

I love cocktails at Christmas and I've discovered elderflower liquor as an addition which gives champagne and prosecco a delicious kick. At the moment I like Green Ginger Fizz which incorporates lime, ginger and prosecco!

Kazzawazzawo0 · 25/11/2015 00:50

My favourite drink at Christmas is coffee with either Bailey's or Kahlua.

homeschool · 25/11/2015 11:36

We love hot chocolate here, the cold is a good excuse, and shivering burns calories... right?

Lulabellx1 · 25/11/2015 16:54

Home made Baileys:

250ml/9fl oz single cream
1x 397g/14oz tin condensed milk
350ml/12fl oz Irish whiskey
1 tsp Camp coffee essence
3 tsp chocolate sauce
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 tsp almond essence

MMMMMM!

TracyKNixon · 25/11/2015 16:57

Wine, Baileys, flavoured syrups to add to lattes are a must in our home. The kids love lemonade with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream - it fizzes up and they call it champagne!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 25/11/2015 19:50

I live trying different cocktails. I have quite a well stocked drinks cupboard. Piña colada is my current favourite.

anonooo · 25/11/2015 22:19

GLUEHWEIN, JAWOHL! And spiced apple too, or cider. Cocktails are a must. Can't resist a snowball of advocacy and lemonade with a glace cherry on a stick.

sofieellis · 26/11/2015 10:49

Some of our Christmas Favourites:

Black Russian - Tia Maria, Vodka and Coke
Bubbly Blonde - Pernod, Advocaat and Lemonade
Amaretto Fizz - Amaretto, Orange Juice and Sparkling Wine
Hot Chocolate with Baileys

Can't wait!

TattieHowkerz · 26/11/2015 17:38

I can't drink, which makes planning drinks a bit dull!

Gluwhein is a must though, ideally with burning sugar. I do like a non alcoholic cocktail as well.
