Snazaroo have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ Halloween face painting tips are.

Here’s what they say, “Letting children just be children, to play, run and imagine is important for every parent and a little face paint can transform everyday play into a magical world of make-believe.

"Sometimes face painting can be tricky but we’re here to help. We’re always thinking of easy ways for you to create designs children love. As they turn to see who is in the mirror, the magic shared will be remembered long after the paint has been rinsed away.

"Go on, paint a smile and see what happens”

So, what face painting tips or designs do you have to share with other Mumsnetters for the spookiest time of year? Maybe you have an easy three step design to transform your DC into a vampire? Perhaps you've got that skeleton look down pat or are good at turning out mini monsters or weeny witches? Also, is there anything in particular you enjoy about face painting? Is it the creativity of it? Or seeing how much your DCs enjoy it? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

It would be particularly great if you could also post a picture on this thread of your Halloween face painting prowess Grin

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks

I'm terrible at face painting... buy a mask!! Less cleaning and easier all round! :-D

Themilseys · 19/10/2015 23:26

Search the Internet for simple designs and add your own personal touch.

balloon66 · 20/10/2015 06:02

keep it simple- too much can run and look terrible by the end of a sweaty halloween party!

mshell1231 · 20/10/2015 08:35

I'd love to be able to paint faces well but I don't find it easy. My children are dressing up in outfits that don't require much design for their faces this year so that'll be easier! I will be looking on YouTube for ideas though.

I love painting my DDs. I have to use google/youtube for pictures and nothing too complicated!
DD2 was a skeleton this weekend for gymnastics fun session. Had 15 mins to do it so its a bit rushed.

I looooooove face painting - kids, and adults too if they'll let me!
My tips would be:
*you MUST use a decent brand (Snazaroo is one of my go-to favourites)
*for really effective painting, pay attention to the facial bone structure of the individual - a plan can look great in a book or online, but if you don't adapt it for your subject, it won't quite fit. Cheekbones, hollows of eyes and jawline are key.
*get your kids involved! I've loved face-painting ever since I was about 7 and got a Snazaroo kids pack with a flip-book of designs and a palette attached underneath for a present. (Do these still exist?!) It lasted me years, and I must have spent hundreds of hours quietly painting in front of a mirror. One of the best and most memorable gifts I was ever given.

No picture I'm afraid, not (yet!) a mum, so they're not of my own DCs. But I've painted I think it's accurate to say hundreds of faces at school fetes and productions. I love the creativity, but also the reactions while you're doing it - for every kid that gets twitchy and fidgety, there are 10 who seem to go into a state of deep calm, almost trance like. Surprising, and lovely!

Tutorials are your friend! I'm not arty, and can't really visualise how to build up the design, but can follow a tutorial.

Also, let your kids do face paint on you too. They love it! It looks terrible….but you can wash it off easily!

Use eye makeup remover to remove fake blood, nothing else seems to work!

helcrai · 20/10/2015 12:08

I make cardboard templates of tricky shapes that I want to put on my DD's face. That way its easier to apply the face paint than doing it freehand with wriggly children!

emily13 · 20/10/2015 12:23

Make sure you have lots of wet wipes for when they get fed up of it, and make sure it's all off or it'll end up your towels :(

robyn297 · 20/10/2015 12:51

I came to read the tips, some great ones here. Its our first year dressing up properly, think we need to have a trial run.

emmagough78 · 20/10/2015 13:36

Here are my best tips: To get a good coverage for the foundation colour I use a damp makeup sponge and dip it into the face-paint, apply thin layers of colour and build on top until you get the right strength, waiting for each layer to dry before adding the next. To add detail I use soft thin paint brushes. Always have some baby wipes to hand to correct any mistakes.

suzyq50 · 20/10/2015 14:00

I keep it simple so just focus around the eyes. Usually a super hero mask type design. Or fangs & drops of blood around the mouth.

Obs2015 · 20/10/2015 14:05

I think people get a bit over-competitive.
I am not very good. Really. But the fact I even do it is good enough for my kids.
And yes I use the White, black and red from the poundshop that costs, funnily enough £1.00 !!

toxicitygirl · 20/10/2015 14:30

Use tissue paper with pva glue for simple zombie wounds!

cluckyhen · 20/10/2015 14:33

Keep it fun and simple!

Jocelynne123 · 20/10/2015 14:42

I'm lucky my mum used to do face painting at mcdonalds so she can make amazing designs. We aren't quite at the scary halloween designs yet still painting butterfly's and flowers and frozen mainly. Xx

mumpetuk1 · 20/10/2015 15:36

Research what you are going to do and make sure the person is not allergic to any of the paints

Mandahul · 20/10/2015 17:25

My tip is let my husband do it, his lack of artistic skills always give the Halloween make up that naturally, realist messy look lol

matphil · 20/10/2015 19:03

I like to get my children to draw what they want on paper first as what I think they want and what they are describing are usually very different.
I then practice a few times on paper until we are both happy with the result, then just copy the design onto their faces.
I usually put moisturiser on their faces first as it helps the paint go on and it's easier to wipe off afterwards.

toniuk · 20/10/2015 19:24

Sponge Don't Brush
If you need to cover a large area Let the first colour dry before applying a second To create bumpy noses or big eyebrows, soak cotton wool in the paint, place on face, cover with a tissue and paint Use Stencils If you're not confident painting freehand

topgunmatt · 20/10/2015 19:30

Always be careful around the eye area and this is especially important for young children who may rub their eyes and get the face paint in them. Makeup that can be removed with soap and water is recommended for use on children and active adults since they clean up easier and are more comfortable to wear. Be sure to test your makeup on a small area first to make sure that it does not irritate the skin.

I love getting the children's make up done for Halloween. We use a mixture of face paints, make up and latex for the desired results. My tip is to buy the best face paints that you can as the quality of the paint shows in the finished design.

These are the children last year, a lovely cute kitty and a not so cute zombie
