Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

Not a surprise food as such, but as I'm veggie I mainly bbq delicious non-meat foods, which, for guests is surprisingly tasty and a refreshing change -

Veg & haloumi skewers - haloumi, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, peppers, red onions
Corn on the cob, wrapped in foil with butter
Jacket potatoes - pre soften in the microwave then pop on the BBQ wrapped in foil with garlic butter and some grated cheese in the middle

sharond101 · 15/06/2015 16:28

sweet potatoes - ultimate deliciousness

TealFanClub · 15/06/2015 16:35

pitta bread

grilled

brushed with melted butter with garlic/herbs in it

TheDailyWail · 15/06/2015 16:36

halloumi with veg kebabs marinated in a rosemary and thyme infused with balsis and olive oil with pitta and we do a soft cheese dip topped with sweet chilli sauce or mango chutney. Yum.

Crisping pre-cooked jacket potatoes that have been rubbed with olive oil.

Chococroc · 15/06/2015 17:05

Halloumi skewers with various veg.

Garlic bread (wrap in tin foil to cook)

I always pop some potato rostis on as a side, I grill lovely chicken seasoned with tikka or lemon and pepper, and use this to add to a salad. I make fresh chicken strips for children, and handmade burgers. I keep everything gluten free. For dessert I warm some previously made scotch pancakes and let the children skewer some marsh mellows, banana onto sticks, cover in foil and let them warm through, normally messy but yummy.

UpOnDown · 15/06/2015 18:33

Not really a surprise, but garlic and chilli king prawns bbqed on a skewer.

Theas18 · 15/06/2015 19:50

Lidl has halloumi in Greek week. You have to wait for it to come around and stock up!

None of these , apart from maybe mango or orange are really suprise items are they?

Ive read the whole thread waiting for a vicar of dibley esque sardines coated in peanut butter and lightly charred or similar. That's a real surprise item!

Maiyakat · 15/06/2015 20:02

Veggie kebabs - yum! And of course toasted marshmallows....

forcookssake · 15/06/2015 22:01

Both pineapple and halloumi are bbq stalwarts, but our surprising family bbq tradition is to assemble skewers with chunks of alternated pineapple+halloumi. It's popular with all ages and is an unusual salty/sweet treat.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 15/06/2015 23:40

Courgette is also good cut lengthways into wide slices, with a little oil and black pepper or whatever seasonings you fancy.

We like prawns as a treat, either on skewers or in a foil parcel with a nice marinade or sauce.

Hopezibah · 15/06/2015 23:42

not mega unusual but making skewers of veg like courgette, mushroom, cherry tomato etc really is popular. Perfect for vegetarians and also its the only time my kids eat mushroom!

Surprise was having swordfish at a friends BBQ - Tasted awesome and I usually am not keen on fish of any kind at all!

Oh and something to make in the BBQ ashes - Damper bread - easy peasy recipe - mega fun for the kids too.

Twothirdsamidwife · 16/06/2015 07:08

Salmon fillets marinaded in soy sauce, honey and a little olive oil - goes all sticky and yummy!!

Love the ideas on here - hate the boring burger and sausage that hubbie thinks bbq' sate solely for!!!

hanette · 16/06/2015 07:55

Halloumi
Giant tomatoes
Courgettes
Lamb in honey
Marshmallows

Emrob86 · 16/06/2015 09:38

I love grilling exotic fruit like pineapple, mango and bananas and then serve it with ice cream and golden syrup. People are surprised but love it! :)

momb · 16/06/2015 11:43

I do parboiled baby new potatoes on skewers brushed with olive oil and a sprinkle of garlic salt: crispy roast potato flavour but already portioned into one skewer each!
camp pizza: a wrap spread with tomato puree, a sprinkle of herbs, a section of whatever precooked toppings you have and a sprinkle of cheese, folded into a rectangle with no middle showing. Wrap well in foil and barbecue over glowing coals for a couple of minutes each side until the cheese melts. Kids love this!

RoobyTuesday · 16/06/2015 12:31

Barbecued hall uni and king prawn kebabs

Yogasuz · 16/06/2015 13:12

I now do what Mum used to do for us on the bbq - banana with any chocolate bar cut and slotted into cuts in the banana, wrapped in tin foil, popped on bbq and then served with cream or ice cream or both!

Adult version is lovely with bit of amaretto or Tia Maria added in with the banana Smile

I went to a veggie BBQ and wasn't sure what that was going to be all about, but they did aubergine, pinnapple, banana and haloumi... it was surprisingly good!

GemmeFatale · 16/06/2015 16:34

Jalapeño peppers, de seed, stuff with cheese and (assuming no veggies) wrap in streaky bacon. The creamy cheese and the heat of the jalapeño work nicely and the bacon adds a salty crunch.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 16/06/2015 17:25

Asparagus with chorizo. Doesn't sound adventurous but guests kick themselves that they hadnt thought to do it before Wink

snowymum12 · 16/06/2015 17:38

asparagus.....mmmmmmm perfect on its own or wrapped in a slice of Parma ham. A perfect treat for my barbecue.

BeeMyBaby · 16/06/2015 17:53

Not really a surprise, but baking potatoes in foil, absolutely delicious and 10x better than the oven... Just so so good... I'm now feeling disappointed that I'm only having oven ones tonight.
