Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

BBQ sweet corn. If you wrap it in foil with an ice cube it sort of steams itself, but I prefer the char grilled edges without an ice cube. Tastes like caramel popcorn almost.

Corn on the cob is delicious on the BBQ!

Marymaymay · 13/06/2015 06:14

Strawberries, cooked over foil, drop of honey rum to flambé, served with Hockings clotted cream ice cream (a Devon speciality.

Justtrying · 13/06/2015 06:55

Corn on the cob wrapped in foil with butter, chopped red chilli and grated ginger.

Apples with chocolate:

Core an apple, fill empty core space with chocolate, wrap in foil, cook, eat. Yum,yum!

DoodlePegs · 13/06/2015 07:15

Dough twists:
Make a very simple dough (flour, water, egg, milk). Take a hand sized lump and roll roughly into a worm shape, wrap around a long twig, cook, dip into jam or chocolate spread, eat! Delicious, child friendly, outdoor baking.

A very simple but delicious home made coleslaw recipe of mine. Red cabbage, white cabbage, red onion and apple all sliced up and mixed with blue cheese dressing. It's gorgeous.

To go with the meat and salad, a large mushroom upside down, so like a cup, fill the inside with grated cheese and garlic. BBQ until cheese has melted.

For pudding. A banana in its skin, positioned in the boat shape, grill for a few minutes, the slit along the top, add chocolate buttons and wait until they are melting. Serve with pouring cream. The skin keeps everything in like a bowl. This is the most popular thing we do by a mile.

A huge mushroom wrapped in foil with olive oil and garlic is gorgeous. Much appreciated by those who do not want meat but want something chewy!

Purplehonesty · 13/06/2015 09:24

I love marinating lamb with spices and oil or brushing with curry paste and threading on skewers with peppers and tomatoes to make kebabs.
Really simple. Looks and tastes good

Children LOVE this easy pud-tortilla smeared with Lidl peanut butter-it's yum! Add some chocolate spread & some mini marshmallows and/or banana -wrap up & put into tin foil. It's lush.

Also Bbq pineapple after it's been marinaded in mint sugar-some Demerara sugar muddled with fresh mint leaves & smear over slices of fresh pineapple, (leave the core in). Let it marinade for a few hours & tastes delicious but then gets all caramelised when grilled, nom nom nom....

Nightboattocairo · 13/06/2015 09:45

I love to cook chicken wings until they are beautifully crispy then coat with maple syrup and tamari to glaze. I usually make a dip to go with, usually a creamy one with mayo, cream cheese & a strong blue cheese like Dolcelatte. Heavenly.

LadyDeadpool · 13/06/2015 09:48

Mushrooms, big flat ones and halluhmi for an impressive bbq veggie burger

TheyreMadITellYouMaaaad · 13/06/2015 10:09

Fresh pineapple chunks wrapped in pastrami, skewered and grilled.

MmmmmmmSmile

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 13/06/2015 10:32

We make out own skewered kebabs because everyone likes different meat, doesn't like onion/mushroom/peppers/feta etc. Soak the wooden skewers first to stop them burning on the bbq, then skewer on your chosen ingredients.

thatstoast · 13/06/2015 10:46

Pineapple! I was served it by an Aussie years ago. They know their BBQ, it was amazing.

CopperPan · 13/06/2015 10:47

Aubergine stuffed with couscous, and courgette and halloumi kebabs are fantastic on the bbq.

elephantoverthehill · 13/06/2015 10:48

Those little peppers simply roasted whole, and whole leg of lamb.

ShangriLaLaLa · 13/06/2015 13:05

Thin salami slices on the barbecue, first of all. The dripping oils get the coals going nicely and the crisped up slices are perfect to hand around with other nibbles and a glass of cold lager while we wait for the sausages etc.

missorinoco · 13/06/2015 13:26

Halloumi and courgettes is my surprise. The children were less than enamored, but we loved it. Haven't tried asparagus in foil - will remember that one. Do you add butter or oil?

Naoko · 13/06/2015 13:41

Pineapple. Just cut into large wedges, grilled till the bits in contact with the grill caramelise, turn a few times so you get it on all sides, and then served with really good vanilla ice cream.

Follyfoot · 13/06/2015 13:48

Remove the stalks from some field mushrooms and stuff the cavity with a mixture of grated cheese, finely chopped onion (spring onion or red is best) and lots of grain mustard. Brush the mushroom with oil and barbecue until the mushroom is cooked and the cheese mixture has melted. Divine.

Follyfoot · 13/06/2015 13:49

Oh and naan bread is great - but thats hardly a 'suprise' I guess. Wet the bread all over under a running tap to make it soft and fluffy when its cooked.

dreamingofsun · 13/06/2015 14:28

spatchcock chicken marinated in herbs, lemon or orange juice, olive oil and honey. cooked on the BBQ and then finished in the oven

SleepIsOverrated · 13/06/2015 14:40

Big flat mushrooms, gill side down first then flip and dollop a load of goats cheese on top as the top not grills.
