Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

If you find that hallomi falls apart on the bbq, then slice open pitta bread, stuff with slices of hallomi and bbq. You won't lose the hallomi, but be careful not to burn the pitta bread.

With a lidded BBQ fresh pizza is amazing. As is roast chicken. You need a good quality pizza stone though, not the rubbish cheap ones that can't go above 200 degrees.

Veggie kebabs for me - red, orange and yellow pepper, courgette, sweetcorn, red onion, tomatoes, fennel, halloumi. You could do mushrooms if you liked but I don't Grin You can add chunks of veggie sausages, but I pre-fry these.

And another vote for pineapple, pineapple kebabs on their own or put some on your veggie kebab.

A couple of big bowls of coleslaw and tabbouleh.

Pavlova - I make one I call Chocca MochaLova - add some strong cold coffee and a bit of icing sugar to the cream and crumble Flakes over the top.

Eton Mess - my favourite version is blackcurrants, because quite tart and zingy - cook slightly with a bit of sugar until the fruit just starts to burst, let it cool, and swirl through the meringue and cream mmmmm

I love barbequed banana and toasting marshmallows too...

I quite like cooking potatoes on a bbq. So new potatoes in foil with a bit of butter straight into the coals to cook.

Maybe not a 'surprise' or particularly unusual but 'build your own skewers' are a favourite.
Have plates of meat (chicken or lamb usually) and a range of veg (peppers, mushrooms, courgette, onion) - give everyone a skewer each and let them make up their own before throwing on the bbq!

Yummy halloumi cheese (thanks Lidl!)
Chicken thighs marinated in peri peri sauce. Yum!
Home made burgers (check out the MN cookbook!)

Bananas with rum, sugar and coconut.

insanityscatching · 13/06/2015 21:44

I love pineapple ,sprinkle with brown sugar first and then caramelise on the barbecue. Great with ice cream. Peaches are also great, again serve with ice cream.
Savoury wise I like to cook peppers, courgettes and beef tomatoes too just a brush with oil and they are done.

Signoritawhocansway · 13/06/2015 22:33

I always think bbqs don't offer enough veg, so my faves are courgette with lemon pepper baked in foil with butter and corn on the cob with black pepper and butter, again in foil.

TheSpottedZebra · 13/06/2015 22:47

Lots of people have said banana and pineapple, but charge ill ed mango is amazing too. With a bit of salty cheese like feta, or a sprinkling of chilli and some lime.

TheSpottedZebra · 13/06/2015 22:48

Grrr. Chargrilled mango

campocaro · 14/06/2015 08:20

2 really nice additions for veggie barbecues:

Lemon butter (chopped up lemon rind and juice mixed in with butter, salt and pepper)-delicious with barbecued jacket potatoes.

Also mini rataouille and feta bakes: chop up peppers, courgettes, mushrooms and tomatoe into little cubes, add similar sized cubes of feta cheese and put into little one portion sized foil parcels (square of foil, place portion in middle and bring up corners and then scrunch into a little handle). Bake for about 7 mins. Little hot parcels of veggie scrumptiousnes!

Parrish · 14/06/2015 08:30

Those tiny little green chillies, Piminentos de Padrona or Padron chillies, in foil or on a skillet sprinkled with olive oil and sea salt. They are mostly mild flavoured but there is always one which is a hot one! Chilli roulette!

AuntieMaggie · 14/06/2015 08:48

Prawns and other shellfish with their shells still on - amazing and the kids love it!

2gorgeousboys · 14/06/2015 09:28

Tuna steaks cooked in foil with lemon butter. We tend to barbecue when camping so things need to be easy to prepare. We also like garlic mushrooms - baby button mushrooms, garlic butter all wrapped into a foil parcel. Delicious.

slithytove · 14/06/2015 09:34

Beer bum chicken!

leabee79 · 14/06/2015 14:11

Grilled mushrooms with garlic butter, topped with cheese ??

leabee79 · 14/06/2015 14:14

Also bananas with brown sugar wrapped in foil Smile

suzyq50 · 14/06/2015 15:15

Halloumi cheese is good on the BBQ as it keeps it shape & doesn't get all messy. Mix it with peppers, cherry tomatoes & courgettes for kebabs.

Newquay · 14/06/2015 15:26

'S'mores- or I what I assume they are. Marshmallows toasted on bath ur turn squashed between 2 chocolate digestives. Awesome!

Adarajames · 14/06/2015 15:27

Halluomi and plum kebabs, the contrast in flavours is great

WowOoo · 14/06/2015 16:26

i like a selection of things to make your own kebab. I love prawns - big ones with a chilli dip I make myself.

Unescorted · 14/06/2015 17:24

Woody herbs soaked in water for a couple of hours (or overnight) thrown on the BBQ and fish steamed over the top...

Monk fish wrapped in parma ham with sage steam works really well.

patterkiller · 14/06/2015 18:24

Pointy red peppers filled with a mix of feta, mozzarella and cheddar or any old cheese left over, cubed chorizo or we have been known to stick a cooked chippolata in the middle. Bbq for a few minutes until the cheese begins to melt and the peppers start to chargrill.
