Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

Pineapple with chilli, brown sugar and rum. Wrap in tinfoil and let it sit on the bbq while having your main. Serve with ice cream. To die for!

Have cooked nearly everything on a bbq. Even a birthday cake. Turned out well if not a little smoky.

Similar to Adarajames, barbecued fig goes well with halloumi

Russian potato salad given to me by a Bulgarian friend years ago (the recipe that is).
Always gets gobbled up

Asparagus wrapped in prosciutto

Potato wedges with cajun spice, cooked wrapped in tin foil. Delicious and always disappear quickly.

Toasted marshmallows then sandwiched between two chocolate digestives (chocolate facing in). Yuuuuuuuummmmmm

A handmade burger with mince and mixed spices. Then add a babybel in the middle of the burger and BBQ. The best burgers in the world!

Banana wrapped in bacon and grilled to a crisp- I only ever cook this at barbecues- don't knock it til you have tried it!

Pineapple!

Fillybuster · 15/06/2015 11:18

Maybe not all that original, but my secret BBQ dessert is cutting bananas in half lengthways, then filling them with dark chocolate and wrapping them back up in silver foil and giving them 10 mins or so on the grill as it cools.

I can't stand bananas (!) but everyone else in my family loves them, and these go down a treat :)

I love putting chickpeas on the BBQ when I can as they make a really tasty houmous with a brilliant smokey flavour. Yum!!

BBQ orange quarters (skin on) covered in brown sugar & BBQ'ed - delicious pudding - thank you Levi Roots.

A Brazillian friend would always BBQ whole onions - they take some time, but put them on and leave them on for ages and then when you eat them you cut open and they are sweet and soft and lovely. We would usually eat them later in the evening after the main meal, as the coals subsided * they had cooked long and low.

A whole fish can be wrapped in newspaper and cooked on the BBQ - my stepmum does this & it cooks quickly and is great.

Also learned from my local Turkish okabasi, slice a whole aubergine & then put spiced minced lamb in between each slice and reassemble onto a long skewer. takes a while to cook but delicious.

We do halloumi wraps, with long thin pieces of courgette to wrap around the cheese, and then skewered to hold it all in place. My favourite is with a little bit of chilli jam or sweet chilli sauce smeared over the cheese, then a piece of red pepper on top, then the whole thing wrapped with the courgette. Gorgeous!

wheretoyougonow · 15/06/2015 12:58

Potato waffles. Everyone loves these in our house. Also chorizo in any form!

mumsbe · 15/06/2015 13:28

Stuffed peppers wrapped in foil you can put anything in from fish and rice with veg topped with mozzarella lovely.
Also avocardo goats cheese and pickled onions and tomartoes on a scewer wrapped in foil with a bit of salsa sauce tastes lovely

MTBMummy · 15/06/2015 13:58

This is one that gets me some funny looks

A couple of trout stuffed with feta and spinach, wrapped in numerous sheets of wet newspaper, one the newspaper burns off you have perfectly cooked, very tasty trout.

careroftwins · 15/06/2015 14:16

Fresh figs grilled on the BBQ make a great dessert after all those sausages and burgers. Add some clotted cream!

hermancakedestroyer · 15/06/2015 14:36

I love to toast halloumi cheese on my bbq. It holds together beautifully and tastes delicious!

McBaby · 15/06/2015 14:49

Halloumi grilled till toasted then sprinkled with mint and lemon juice when it's come off.

peronel · 15/06/2015 14:49

Bananas filled with almonds and cinnamon or hazelnuts and cherries. Peeled then served with lashings of double cream. Delicious!

Flossiecrossie · 15/06/2015 15:03

Home-made smoked haddock & chorizo fishcakes are just scrummey when cooked over a BBQ - all ingredients from Lidl of course.

ChampagneShowers · 15/06/2015 15:24

There is absolutely nothing that is better for having a burnt layer of black on it.

LovelyFriend · 15/06/2015 15:27

Lots of halloumi lovers here!!

LIDL - I've only seen halloumi in your stores once. Please can you stock it all the time? Thank you

Cuppachaplz · 15/06/2015 15:28

I do make your own kebabs for children (and me Grin) cut up pieces of different meat/veg and tomatoes, mushrooms, onions and courgette and self assembly. There's always one guest who makes a meat feast though!
Pudding us Pineapple strips sprinkled with cinnamon and brown sugar. Mmmmm
Also bananas left in skin, stuffed with chocolate and wrapped in foil.
