Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

Heck Chicken Italia Sausages. bsoutely gorgeous and very low in fat. These are the best for hot dogs in my opinion with onions and mustard.

Brie, and then some bread to dip is yum on the BBQ :)

Fruity skewers, strawberries, melon, peach, pineapple, mango all work well. Get the kids to build them. Brush with a little honey, grill and serve with creme fraiche.

jamielmdjs · 26/06/2015 00:27

we bought a pizza oven that fits on top of the bbq and makes crispy smoky fired pizzas which are amazing.

I'm praying for a pizza summer.

Magic Rub - mustard, onion, paprika, salt, pepper, garlic, corriander, cumin - goes with just about anything, tastes amazing.

Make a slit down the length of a banana and insert chocolate bar squares... put on the bbq until melted inside... makes a great bbq dessert

vicks276 · 26/06/2015 08:31

Chocolate bananas in foil!

ikkle87 · 26/06/2015 11:31

we marinade chicken pieces in tikka and yoghurt and then make skewers with peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and onions. They are delicious and go great with a side salad and home made cucumber raita

hannahlw85 · 26/06/2015 12:45

I like making meat skewers where the meat is marinated in different homemade marinates and putting it on the skewer randomly so there's loads of flavours. I also make my own BBQ sauce that I paint on to the food just as it goes on the bbq, it was a recipe my mum made up and has always been popular for as long as I can remember, she even used to make batches up and bottle them to give to friends with how much they loved it. My bbq fod is nothing even remotely near to how amazing hers was, she was the bbq queen!

Candyperfumegirl · 26/06/2015 14:03

Halloumi & veg skewers ... totally yum!

mummsie72 · 26/06/2015 16:16

Spam in honey and mustard sauce on skewars with cherry tomatoes, baby sweetcorn and button mushrooms, cheap and nutritious.

Minnie43 · 26/06/2015 19:13

I'm a huge fan of marinating the centrepiece of the barbecue in Lidl's Cola overnight with a few herbs/spices sprinkled on top. A quick pat dry before the guests arrive and we are good to go.
This technique is gret for ribs, but works wonders on a variety of meats - it goes sweet and sticky, mmm, delicious NOM NOM NOM!
