Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

Apple and blackberry crumble - do in loaf tin and only works in barbecue with a lid. Really nice smoky flavour and perfect for those end of season freezing cold barbecues.

Marshmallow and banana kebabs wrapped in foil......bliss!!

Theimpossiblegirl · 16/06/2015 21:17

Coke can burgers- home-made burgers with a can pressed into them to make a dip, filled with a filling of your choice then topped with bacon to seal in your filling.
Possible fillings can include: chilli, cheddar cheese, stilton, brie, halloumi, mushrooms, anything you fancy really.

Chop some garlic and corriander; mix with the juice of 2 or 3 limes and leave chicken breasts to soak overnight in tin foil. Cook the chicken, still in the foil on the BBQ. Lush.

Fruit kebabs - banana, peach and pineapple. Also BBQed avocado served with sour cream and chives.

pockledigg · 17/06/2015 05:28

Aubergine, or 'OH-bergine' as it should be called.
BBQ til it's a bit black and all smokey, stuff the blighter into a roll with some hummus & chilli sauce and you're instantly transported to a backstreet bazaar in old Marrakesh (or maybe that's just me....)

We always throw a few bananas in their skin on towards the end and once the skin turns black they are ready - really delicious, easy and relatively healthy

kicking01king · 17/06/2015 07:11

Halloumi, pepper, onion and pineapple kebabs. Lovely sweet and sour vegetarian alternative.

abigailflo7 · 17/06/2015 07:36

Home made burgers can't beat them!

allybruce · 17/06/2015 07:42

I love to cook fish on the bbq. Have learnt that if you cook a whole fish you need to cover it in salt to stop it sticking to the bbq.

tiameg · 17/06/2015 07:44

I make a block of polenta and cover it in garlic and herbs overnight. Then slice it and fling it on the BBQ. It's yummy and great if you have any vegetarians attending. It's always been a hit at my BBQ with everyone.

devito92 · 17/06/2015 07:49

maryandbuzz1 · 17/06/2015 07:59

Has to be bananas and Mars bars wrapped in foil and baked. Delicious with Baileys poured over them.... Or cream

finleypop · 17/06/2015 08:09

Chicken & chorizo kebabs. I can't believe how many people have still not tried chorizo & BBQ'd it is just so delicious! Everyone always falls in love with it & asks what it is.

shivbrown · 17/06/2015 08:13

New potato, halloumi and sage kebabs so tasty and easy to make :)

lmk999 · 17/06/2015 08:14

Sliced barbecued aubergines - they're delicious, and taste totally different to what you'd expect. I drizzle a bit of olive oil over them prior to cooking, and add a little salt and pepper. When they're golden-brown, they're ready to enjoy :)

Micah68 · 17/06/2015 08:44

Halloumi cut into cubes and placed in tin foil with small tomatoes. Coat with sweet chill sauce and put on the barbecue until tender. Add to a pannini with lots of fresh salad.

rosemac6 · 17/06/2015 08:44

Marinated beef ribs and BBQ sauce with a hint of chilli
