Railcard want to talk to you about their Family & Friends Railcard, plus find out about what makes a great day out for you and your family.

Railcard say “We’re offering you the chance to treat your family to a fun-filled theatre trip for 4. What’s more, you’ll also win a Family & Friends Railcard and free rail travel, to help you save money on all your future family adventures.

If you win, your Family & Friends Railcard (worth £30) means you can enjoy 1/3 off most adult fares and 60% off kids’ fares throughout Great Britain for a whole year. So whatever outings you’ve got planned, your Railcard can get you there for less. It really is win-win.

But that’s not all! Thanks to our pals at ‘Theatre Tokens’, you’ll also have £250 to spend at one of over 240 theatres nationwide, including London’s West End. And Railcard will cover the cost of everyone’s return rail travel too.”

Everyone who posts their answer to the multiple-choice question below and tells us what makes a great family day out will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win £250 worth of Theatre Tokens plus a Family & Friends Railcard.

A great family trip for us is one that is well planned in advance to have all the prior knowledge needed and arrangements in place to cover most eventualities. Knowing we're prepared for the majority of things makes the day more relaxed and enjoyable.

I imagine less planning will be required as the kids get older. But with a 10 month old who doesn't sleep well anywhere apart from her cot, combined with an energetic 4.5 year old, it takes quite a bit of planning just to leave the house at the moment!

Somewhere that the kids can run and climb or interact. I have active boys and they cannot stand still for long.

A great family day out for us involves exercise, fresh air and family time together, as my partner works long hours. Something nice for lunch either a picnic or eating out is great too.

A great family day out for us involves letting the train take the strain, watching my son sit at the platform waiting for the train, swinging his legs with happiness because he just loves trains (even better when the driver waved to him last time we went to Manchester on the train). Then going somewhere to learn something new, have a fresh air and go on a playground. Then we have a picnic or a hot lunch in winter, buy a souvenir postcard and head back to get the train home and then have a cheeky snooze before dinner Blush

Ou perfect kind of family days out are on the train as it brings their imagination alive, we pack a picninc and head to the seaside or to some play park/area in a different town and make magical memories :)

C - both

A great family day out is value for money, exciting/relaxing and stress free - that includes travel Grin

DS loves trains but it always seems expensive and stressful.

A day out in London, that's what always makes a GREAT day out for all of us!! :-D

lionheart · 18/03/2015 20:27

A day out to London with a show or museum trip is ideal although Hamleys and Harrods are also on the list. We like to walk along the river, starting with the London eye and turning left or right. Smile

A great day out for us is something outdoors, out of season, with the correct clothes, meaning we're comfortable and everyone else is indoors!

JoyceDivision · 18/03/2015 20:43

c = both of the above

Our family day out is usually to Manchester to the museums, or hardcastle crag at hebden bridge for a right good yomp, especially in winter in the frost, or ds loves getting a day rover rail ticket and just going anywhere, as long as it involves getting on lots of different trains Grin

We were luckiest enough to win a Merlin pass and we are thinking of getting a train down to London so we can visit some of the attractions. Getting the train would be the easiest way to do this. We also fancy visiting the NHM whilst the dinosaur is still there and the science museum.
Cost is one of the main factors preventing days out so I'm really interested in this rail pass.
Our kids are of an age where this would be an adventure too.

Great days out are when we are all together and a break from the humdrum of daily life.

We've used ours a lot. Kids love going by train :)

DS1 loves going places on the train and it is often cheaper to do so when you factor in petrol and the cost of parking.

mushroom3 · 19/03/2015 10:06

We use our F+F railcard for family trips to the seaside, it costs less than going by car and we avoid all the traffic. The F+F railcard pays for itself after a couple of trips!

The best family day out was waking one morning a couple of summers ago the day was glorious, my friend called to say she was going to the beach & invited us to go, made a few sandwiches and we jumped on the train. Was a wonderful day, the weather was amazing and the kids had so much fun. My friend took her laptop so the kids watched iplayer cartoons till we got there.

Still remember it fondly.

As long as you are with your family any trip can be special, its the people not the place that make it special

I love family days out on the train, not being restricted to sitting down for the whole journey. We can get to London in just over 2 hours, it takes 4 (at least) to drive it!

making sure everyone gets enough food and sleep at the right times

GoodGriefCharlieBrown · 19/03/2015 15:09

C - both.

A great day out MUST include a picnic, a train ride so we don't have to sit in traffic and argue about directions, and - unless we want a very upset toddler - some animals to chase/feed.

TalesOfStepford · 19/03/2015 17:14

C : save on both. We didn't buy a F&F Railcard for a long time but now we have I don't think we could do without it, it's such amazing value. And we love just taking spontaneous trips to London or the coast and not having to drive (or park!). Our favourite kind of trip is an early train to London, breakfast & coffee on board, then a few hours spent enjoying The Science & Natural History Museums followed by a walk through Hyde Park. If we bring a picnic it makes a really reasonable day out.
